RLRR cats move to Duluth

UPDATE FROM ADOPTERS:
I thought you might enjoy seeing "Bubba" and "Ceasar" again.  Two cats from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from last July that went to Duluth's Animal Allies, and then were adopted by us.

BUBBA/TUCKER
They are still having a good time ruling the roost at 1 year of age. We have named them Rusty and Tucker Quinn. Tucker has gained a bit too much weight.. The positive with that is it cuts down on his climbing up on things as much.

CEASAR/RUSTY
That was a good article about the good works and choices you and your volunteer connections make on a daily basis in the Duluth newspaper.

Thank you all !
Have a good spring.

Polly & Dan's with Rusty & pups

Polly has been rescuing animals in Red Lake and surrounding area for many years. She has been with Red Lake Rosie since the very beginning and has saved thousands. Polly and Dan drive around the reservation and feed animals and rescue those they find at the garbage dumps and those homeless on the highway.

Polly has been battling illness for the past 9 months but that doesn't stop her from helping animals when she was not at Mayo.

For the past month she has kept a homeless mama, we call Rusty and a litter of 9 puppies, which she brought to the shelter last week, and they were immediately placed at Animal Allies the following day.

The puppies were all healthy and rolly-polly thanks to their good care.

Nancy and Tom answered the call for a transport to get the precious cargo to Duluth on Thursday, February 23rd.

Thank you Polly and Dan for all your hard work that helped yet another family on to a future of adoptive homes. We respect your persistance and caring for others in spite of your own health challenges.

Thank you also to Tom and Nancy who never say "no", and to Animal Allies for taking Rusty and her kids.

Growing pups at TLC

TLC Canine Rescue took in six pups from a litter of twelve from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and we were pleased to get an update on the little darlings.

LITTER OF 12 PUPSHere is an update on the little ones. They are getting so BIG. Poor little ones all had Parvo. We fought that and won; now, poor little Athena got an infection and we are fighting with that.
MEGKODIAKHERCULESZEUSRUSTYATHENAThank you Mike they LOVE the food we just got. So do we ;~}

TLC Canine Rescue

RUSTY & HERCULESOh Lisa and Bob- they are beautiful.

I don't know how you do it- to pull through all 6 from parvo- especially them being orphaned so young- I am very surprised you were able to save them all. I have not heard that the other 6 had parvo, but I will contact SFAAR and find out.

Must say that TLC always does the best for the Red Lake puppies. Have a great day!!

Rusty - Dancing again in the spirit world

Many people who have visited Red Lake Rosie's Rescue have met Rusty, a female shepherd that lived at the uphouse. Rusty came here as a rescue dog before Red Lake Rosie's was a reality.

In the fall of 1998, this girl lived at the curve of the road going into Red Lake. She entertained people by dragging plastic bags in her mouth and spinning circles. She became known as the plastic dog.

Dr. Mitby and some staff at the Red Lake Hospital would drop her food and treats as she was a homeless dog whom everyone got to know and love. One day Polly called Karen at work and said that the Conservation Department was planning on shooting Rusty because there were complaints that she would cause an accident by her antics of running across the highway with the hefty bags.

So Karen, that very day on her way home from work found Rusty, scooped her up and put her in the pickup truck and off to the west boundary where she made her home.

The hospital staff took up a collection and helped Rusty get spayed and vaccinated. Rusty had visitors in those early years from Dr. Mitby and even a vanload of elders came out one day to see her. She was a legend in Red Lake and everyone knew her.

Once at the shelter she graduated from plastic to tarps--so we had to hide all the tarps. Then it was rocks, and finally, the last few years she ended up loving tennis balls. Her special friends were Barbara Bowman, Nancy O'Sullivan and Carolyn May.

Our dear Rusty entered the spirit world this morning, November 30 at 11:30 am.

She passed away at home laying on a blanket with her ball. She has been ill for a while with dwindling appetite, and finally quite drinking water and broth last night.

It is a very sad day here as all the other dogs were sad too, and Julie laid beside her last night. It was as if they all knew.

I let you know because each and every one of you especially loved Rusty --she is in heaven now--chasing balls.

NANCY ALSO WROTE:
Has Karen sent you info on the recent loss of her beloved Rusty?
Karen tells the story behind Rusty's rescue the best so it needs to come
from her, but I wanted to share this photo of Rusty. She was never
without a tennis ball.....one of the sweetest little girls on the face
of the earth. She was deeply loved.

Diesel delights

Hi Everyone,

Thought we'd send another update your way.

Diesel (fka Rusty) just recently turned a year old (we think), and is doing awesome. He's gradually transitioning from goofy puppy and into a more mature and reliable member of the family (not that we have a problem with goofy).

His attitude is nothing short of amazing given his rocky start- his tail is always wagging and he's always happy.

It turns out that he's got an appreciation for music too- his most recent stunt was accompanying the five year old member of our family in a violin/doggie duet.

We cannot express how happy we are that he's a part of our family.

Thanks again for all you do!

Diesel -- My how you've grown!!

BABY PHOTODEEDEE SAYS:
This is an update on Diesel, the puppy who came in covered in motor oil. Can't believe he is so big and beautiful. He was such a sad, scrawny, little thing.

HIS MOM SAYS:
I thought maybe you folks would like to see Diesel almost grown up. He just finished his beginners class and will be heading on to intermediate, and just maybe down the line some UKC shows- he's a natural performer.

DENISE SAYS: Brings tears to my eyes.

Rusty / Jiffy / Diesel

This is an update on the little puppy who was named Rusty and had motor oil poured all over him (as an attempt to treat his mange). Karen Good had to give him TWO Dawn soap baths to get him clean! His name with us was Rusty, also known as Jiffy. His new name is Diesel. :)

T

BABY RUSTYHello - just wanted to update Red Lake Rosie about Rusty (now Diesel). He is doing great. We started puppy classes 4 weeks ago and Diesel is a dynamite learner. We have the fastest recalls in the group and he plants it directly in front of me. I'm an obedience old timer, and can't recall better recalls or fronts from any past obedience companions. He's just 5 months old! His only flaw is his sometimes uncontrolled desire to go greet any passing human - he loooves humans.

GROWING DIESELDiesel now weighs 42 pounds and has German Shepherd-sized paws (maybe bigger). We use his crate only for feeding, otherwise he has the run of the house
day and night. His most important job in life is to be a companion for Echo, our GS, who missed her old friend, Sheltie Oliver. He's all that - they play by the hour and argue over precious throwing sticks which litter the lawn. Diesel is very smart outside around machinery or horses, and knows that it's time to leave the barn when the horses come in.

DIESEL TODAYI love him for his good nature, intelligence and sense of humor. Anyone who doubts that dogs have a sense of humor (even with a history of adversity), just haven't been around dogs long enough.

Once again, I want to thank and praise Diesel's foster Mom. Diesel came to us 99% trained. He came with a lovable and loving personality. This is real fostering.

Thank you;
JL

Red Lake residents support RLRR

Tony and Vonnie of Red Lake have been very helpful to RLRR for the past year. They have been rescuing and transporting animals to the shelter on a regular basis and are supplied gas for the trips.

TONY & VONNIETony works for Red Lake Housing and is sent all over the reservation and in his daily travels he sees many dogs and pups in need. He calls one of the RLRR people and then will bring the animal. He has saved over 200 this past year.

We have been very hopeful about the reduction of cases of mange in dogs, but last week Tony and Vonnie brought 6 very mangey animals in three trips to the shelter.

MISTERThey brought 4 puppies on the first trip. These pups came from the Ponemah dump. We have named the larger pup Mister. The three smaller ones are Toto, Tanya and Taneka.

TOTO, TANYA, TANEKAThen a day later they brought a husky we call Jewelz. She happens to be a sister to Rusty the puppy that went to Dino Beuge last winter that had been immersed in motor oil as a treatment for mange. He got sick and was surrendered to us, however Jewelz was not. Now they have decided to surrender her, as her mange continued to worsen.

JEWELZThen a day after that they arrived with a female shep we call Jonnie Cakes, Her bags were large but there were no puppies with her. She is a wonderful dog.

JONNIE CAKESWe want to thank Tony and Vonnie for their dedication in bringing cats and dogs to the shelter. Now all these animals have hope for a brighter future.

Lauren and Mike gave the four mangey pups, Mister, Toto, Tanya, and Teneka, all a special bath when they visited and they took them to foster care with Terresa, RLRR Petfinder foster and manager, and Kate, Caring Hands.

Thank you all who also transport animals out and to the receiving
organizations.

Rusty-- A Red Lake regular

Many people visit the Red Lake Rosie's shelter and have met Rusty.

Rusty was rescued in 1998 from Red Lake on the curve on Highway # 1 coming into the Red Lake village. She was a homeless shep mix who entertained people on this curve in the road with plastic bags. She would run with the plastic bags and do circles at high speeds catching everyone's eyes. People began to leave her food and she entertained them all.

One day I got a call that the Police was going to have to kill her as it was a concern that she was going to cause an accident on the curve with all her antics. I was able to catch Rusty that very day and moved her to my house where she made herself at home.

With no access to plastic, she started obsessing herself with rocks.
When she met Barbara, Nancy and Tom she had a regular supply of tennis balls and seems to like them as well as rocks.
Everyone that meets Rusty just loves her, and I have attached her makeover picture as she went to the groomer on Monday. Isn't she a doll??

Sincerely, Karen

Easter transport

Here are the pics from Lauren and Mike's transport on Easter.
We are so happy we had them here, and so thankful they transported animals to Pet Haven, Animal Ark, Pet Projects, St Francis of Assissi, and ARVSS. All dogs and pups went to "no kill" placements -- mostly foster homes. The dogs that went to Pet Haven are featured on their dog blog today. Lots of puppies went to Red Lake Rosie's Petfinder foster homes in Rogers, Minnesota.
A special thank you to Linda Ratay for transporting and providing lots of food donations for the upcoming clinics!
Thank you to all and we are so pleased with how this transport went.
Karen and RLRR
NOTE FROM LAUREN & MIKE:
Mike and I went up to Red Lake over Easter weekend to transport animals back to the cities. We packed 37 puppies and dogs into the van!! We had a lot of really little, cute pups.
IZZY'S PUPSRUSTY
One of the pups was Rusty, whose owners had put motor oil all over him. He had lots of fur missing, but is healing now and will find a good home soon. Rusty got to lounge on my lap for part of the ride home, which I enjoyed as much as he did.

The trip was short, but sweet. I'm glad we were able to bring so many animals down. I'm sure Karen will be packed full of animals again in a day or two!
