Dobie blog

My husband and I are fostering Dobie Gage, a former Red Lake Rosie's Rescue dog, through Act V Rescue. After seeing Stuart Little's adorable blog, I thought what a good idea for a potential adopter to be able to see more pictures and videos of him, so I have started a blog for Dobie Gage.

He has been with us in foster care since late May, and now is 6 weeks post-op from surgery on his leg after being hit by a car (we think). He is looking for a forever home and recovering well.

He is sweet and spunky -- we are having fun with him. His blog address is http://www.dobiegage.blogspot.com/. Here's a picture of him and I when we were visiting my parents, what a little love bug!

Check out his previous RLRR blog post from Dr. Vicki and Karen.

Thanks!

Stuart Little's little brother, Stacy

This is a very sad picture of a puppy newly arrived at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. He was also found at the Ponemah Dump and there is no doubt in my mind that he is Stuart Little's little brother.

Imagine this poor fellow suffered another 2 months with mange, dehydration, coccidia, giardia and eye infection in the right eye. His skin resembles that of an armadillo. I can't even imagine how he lived this long- The good sign is he had an appetite.

I started him out with food, water, and a small dose of ivermectin to get rid of the roundworms, and to START getting rid of the mange mites. Tomorrow I will start him on antibiotics for infection, then after that metronidizole for giardia.

Stacy needs your prayers- I am going to do my very best to pull him through--What a fighter!!

Karen :(

UPDATE:
Good news- Act V is taking little Stacy on Sunday 31st.

Smiles all around

DJANGO, MOM, GILDAGilda was a little Rottweiller juvenile found at the Red Lake garbage dump by Polly this winter. She had mange and starvation when found. Thankfully, Gilda went to A Rotta Love and she found a home.

Karen

GILDA AT RLRRUPDATE FROM A ROTTA LOVE:
Gilda went to her forever home tonight!! Congrats to her new momma Shannon and her new brother Django.

Two paws up to Ryan and Shannon for being the fabulous foster parents they are and to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for bringing her to us in the first place.

Gotta love the happy endings....

Angus is Oliver now

Surely you all remember Angus, the pup from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in one of my favorite photos of all time:
I'm happy to share this update from the new family he found through Act V!

OLIVER (fka ANGUS)This is a picture of the puppy you knew as "Angus". He is Oliver to us. We got him from you when he was 8 weeks old. The picture is not the most recent nor the highest quality (a little grainy). However you can see what the little fuzzball is turning into.

He is now 5 1/2 months old, 40# and very well adjusted to people, kids and other dogs. He loves our grandchildren and plays very well with kids as small as 2-3 years. This attached picture is a month old and he is at a dog park in Plymouth, MN.

Right from the get-go he was surprisingly well-socialized with other dogs at the dog park. We took him there shortly after getting him to get him comfortable with dogs since he was an orphan and raised without a mother or siblings. You must have done an excellent job of instilling that in him because he became an instant hit with all the other dogs because he was an excellent playmate with other puppies and even big dogs. He enjoyed wrestling, chasing, being chased and meeting every dog he sees. He goes to the dog park 4-5 times per week if the weather allows.

He is now showing characteristics which look like Beagle/Collie cross with maybe some German Shepherd? I see the beagle in his body shape, legs and tail (also he has a beagle like "Yip"). The back fur coat and some markings look like German shepherd and the face and ears are becoming collie-like but without the long nose. When he was smaller I couldn't take him anywhere without complete strangers complimenting me about what a cute puppy that is. Now that he is less puppy like I get it less often but he is very handsome and well-marked.

His back and mane coat is very thick with a tan undercoat and a longer black outer-coat; causing him to get over-heated readily. His response to that is that he finds water wherever he can and he gets muddy or wet to cool off. He has become a very good swimmer and has intentionally jumped out of my fishing boat (in the middle of the lake) once to cool off. That was one of the indicators to me that he was hot. I used to think it was that he loves to swim, but I have learned it is his response to getting hot.

Before you think he is not being cared for I need to say our home is air- conditioned, he does stay inside, I do try to keep from exercising him in the heat, but he loves to play outside so I have to humor him and let him out for short intervals. I am still trying to find ways to let him get the exercise he needs and satisfy his desire to be outside and to be with me and not overheat.

He cries if I got out into the yard and don't take him and he likes to ride in my truck and in my boat. So, I am not torturing him by taking him out into the sun, I am trying to find out what works and hoping this horrible heat wave passes. He thinks I am torturing him because I don't let him be out more and I haven't taken him to the dog park recently because it has just been too hot.

Anyway, That's what Oliver is up to. We just love him. He is a great family member and well liked by relatives and neighbors. We wouldn't want him to be anything other than exactly what he is. I'll send pictures again which show a close-up of this handsome guy's face. Perhaps in a month or two to keep you posted.

T&S~

NOTE FROM DENISE: I suspect Oliver has some Husky in him and he's going to LOVE winter :-)

"Youth Works" at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue

Who said “Kids Now Days Don’t Know How to Work?”

July 11-14th was a very busy week at the RLRR shelter. We were blessed to have hardworking Youth Works groups from Winona Central United Methodist, Winona, MN; Crossview Church, Leo, Indiana; and First Presbyterian Youth Group, St. James, MN working at the shelter.

The main focus of our project was to brush out the area surrounding the kennels and shelter yard in attempt to get more air in for drying out the shelter and keeping mosquito swarms down. Also the volunteers worked in the cathouse and also removed all the old straw from around the cathouse.

Team 1 worked for the first 2 days and

Team 2 worked the last 2 days.

So much was accomplished during their visit, it was amazing to see that with just hand tools they were able to cut down the area and rake up sticks.

It looks so nice now at the shelter in 3 main areas!

We got 192 hours of volunteer labor on the brushing.

Caleb, the young man with the mohawk haircut got the nickname "Paul Bunyan" as he could carry large trees single-handedly. He also found a large snake, which he relocated to a place away from the brushing area.

Some of the girls fell in love with little Mini- the tiny kitten and pampered her.

The kids absolutely LOVED the dogs and cats, and interacted with them as all the dogs ran free for the 4 days and really liked the company.

Here are some comments that students made:

Tori says: The Red Lake Rosie’s is a great place doing even greater things. It is a privilege to be here.”

Addi says: Red Lake Rosie’s is the place to be to get to know dogs. It’s hard not to find a friend here.”

Megan says: “This mission is a well-worth project- many four-legged friends were made”

Stephanie says: “It is a blessing to serve you- glory to God”.

When the group left they had all gotten together the night before and talked about RLRR being a ministry and pitched in and gave Karen $72.00 as a donation. They had all given some, and that was very moving. They said that they were impressed with the animal project and how RLRR volunteers are giving 100% and that’s why they like to help so much.

Youth Works is operating on the Red Lake reservation from June – August, 2011 doing many great things for the Red Lake community.

Red Lake Rosie’s is so happy just to be able to be a part of their great work.

Sincerely, Karen RLRR

Pet Haven partners with RLRR

THEODOREPet Haven has been an incredible help to Red Lake Rosie's. The cat division of Pet Haven has taken quite a few cats this year, which is a great help as there are so many cats in need of homes up on the reservation.

THEODORETheodore had been a RLRR foster cat for about 6 months and had not received any inquiries, so Pet Haven agreed to take him in order to get him more exposure at the adoption events, etc. He went to the vet for a routine check-up and it was discovered that he had severe stomatitis, which causes inflammation of the entire mouth and gums. It was decided that it would be best for Theo to have a dental with extractions as his condition can be very painful. Last Thursday, Theo had 26 teeth extracted - everything but his 4 canines! This, of course, is not a cheap procedure, but Pet Haven was willing to provide this care to Theo, so he would not have to suffer.

MINIPet Haven also recently took Mini, a little kitten who has an infected eye and whose mom was rejecting him. He will be on oral antiviral meds and special eye ointment until he's all healed up.

CHEVYChevy is another cat that Pet Haven has taken for RLRR. He had been caught in a rabbit snare and had sores around his back legs. He had also been outside all winter in below-freezing temperatures and as a result, his ears were frostbitten and half of each ear has fallen off.

DOVEDove and Sharmaine are RLRR cats who will be up for adoption soon through Pet Haven, as well.

SHARMAINEIt's nice to have such a dedicated rescue partner like Pet Haven to help RLRR with the cats who have medical conditions. If you would like to donate anything to help cover Theodore's dental costs, you can go to Pet Haven's website: www.pethavenmn.org. Every little bit helps! There is a donation page where you can donate any amount of money online. A big THANK YOU to Pet Haven for helping with the RLRR cats!

Thanks,
Lauren

Athena

We are so happy that Athena got to go to Dr. Vickie at Act V on Saturday July 9th.

Athena and one of her pups was rescued by DeeDee during the May MN SNAP clinic at Red Lake. Athena has 2 injured legs, and was full of quills when Dee Dee found her. She was starving and dehydrated and had no energy to even get up. Dee Dee carried her to her car and her journey of healing began.

After her quills were removed, she was spayed and vaccinated. Her legs, front and rear were injured, possibly an old injury. She was bearing weight on her front leg and would hop on 3 legs. As she gained strength and got better she started bearing weight on the rear leg too.

Her eye began to show redness a few days ago, and then it got white and infected. Thankfully Dr. Vickie was able to take Athena and we are hoping to save her eye and also to help her with her legs. We think that her eye infection is related to perhaps a quill that is deep in her face.

Athena is a very sweet dog, and is well worth all the efforts to make her life more pleasant after all that she has been through. Whomever adopts Athena is going to quickly realize they have a real gem!

Thank you Dee Dee and Act V for helping Athena.

Karen

UPDATE FROM ACT V:
Sooo..unfortunately Athena is going to lose her right eye. A quill nicked the lens in her eye and fluid leaked out causing a cataract and glaucoma. The ophthalmologist is hoping to put in an artificial eye so she'll look better. Her surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Otherwise she is doing well. I think she was walking so badly because of Lymes disease. I'll keep you posted with pics!!

12 pups to ARVSS

Twelve pups went to ARVSS (Animal Rescue and Veterinary Support Services) in Wisconsin. Each has their own story of survival and how they came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

ASHAAsha was brought to the shelter one night very late. She was found at the Red Lake dump and a very nice lady brought her all the way to the shelter. She is a very sweet girl.

PANSY & PEONY HIDING JACKThe most needy of these are Pansy, Peony and Jack who were found in Red Lake by Carol. They were very mangy, malnourished and dehydrated. They are in good hands with Susie and Matt.

ANITAA little lone pup- Anita was found in Red Lake.

CHINOOKARDONChinook and Ardon came from the Bemidji Pound on their day 5 when they were to be euthanized.

HART SHEPSThe little litter of 4 sheps were brought here by the Harts. We were able to get the mother dog spayed at Cleawater Vet on July 11th so she will have no more pups.

We are thankful that community members take advantage of our spay/neuter program.

Ahnung is ill

Ahnung has been a wonderful ambassador dog for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

She also has a Facebook page to keep us up-to-date on her good works as a therapy dog and her wonderful life with Marilou from Pet Haven.

Just last week the doctors discovered that Ahnung has an aggressive form of breast cancer. She is feeling fine now, but Marilou isn't doing so well. They have an appointment with the vet oncologist on Tuesday morning.

Learn more about Ahnung & Marilou on Facebook and please offer them your support.

RLRR pets are into social media!

Does your pet from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue have a blog or Facebook page? If so, let me know about it and I'll mention it here.

We just heard about Little Stuart Little, but you should also check in on Bart the Dumpster Dog who was rescued back in 2007 from the Red Lake dump with crippled legs. He's living the good life now!

Adventures of Moje

UPDATE FROM ADOPTER:
I just wanted to write to give you an update on a puppy that you rescued, who we adopted in late March. When we got him, he was named Robin, a 12-week-old husky/lab puppy who was found with his brother (Batman); both were quite malnourished.

He's now almost 6 months old, and doing great. His name is now Moje, he's nearly 50 pounds and a bundle of energy and personality. He's healthy and happy, and we absolutely adore him.

LIKES HIS OWN CHAIRAND THE WIND IN HIS EARSHe lives with us in St. Paul, and we spend most of the summer up at our cabin on a lake in Aitkin county.

He's starting to really enjoy swimming for sticks and going out on the boat, loves to wrestle around with his new sister Maggie in the yard, will chase a ball endlessly, goes on long walks, and can entertain himself for long stretches trying to catch bugs.

He's quite a lover, too, always wants to be near us and leaning into us...and occasionally chewing on us.

MOJE & MAGGIEWe were up near Red Lake this past weekend for Moje's first camping/fishing trip to Lake of the Woods and wanted to stop by, but weren't able to, so I am sending you this email and photos instead.

THAT'S A JOYFUL FACE ALL RIGHT!Thanks for rescuing him, and for all that you do. He's brought a lot of joy into our lives, and we're very grateful.

ROBIN & BATMAN AT RED LAKE ROSIE'S RESCUEHe's come a long way from being that hungry, skinny puppy!
