UPDATE FROM MUSHR: Both Dublin and Dorsey (formerly Cheyenne and Shiloh) were adopted through MUSHR (Minnesota's Unwanted Siberian Husky Rescue) and went to great homes! They were signed up for puppy classes and I believe they are probably going to them currently.
I've attached a couple of pics. They are so darn cute!.
C~ I'd say that's an understatement. They've come a LONG way!!
On Thursday, February 23rd, we had a call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to pick up a tiny husky pup found wandering in a neighborhood in Redby. We responded to the call and picked up this little girl we called Cheyenne. She came in VERY lethargic, starved, dehydrated and full of mange, fleas and chewing lice.
The very next day we got a call from Fannie telling us she found a little male husky pup, we now call Shiloh laying in the snow near her house in Redby barely able to moan, so she wrapped him up in a blanket and brought him to the shelter.
Shiloh was immobile and his body temp dropping, so we warmed him with hot water bottle and hair blower and massaged his body. We were very doubtful, but soon he came back to life. Fannie was very emotional about finding the puppy and if it were not for her quick action, Shiloh would not have lived.
Shiloh is eating and walking around now- He is more emaciated and dehydrated than Cheyenne, but growing stronger each day.
We are so happy that MUSHR took Cheyenne and Shiloh on March 4th transport and we are very hopeful they will continue to thrive and have a great life ahead of them.
A special thanks to Geri, Fannie, and MUSHR for taking the little husky babies. Also to Barbie for the transport.
Congratulations, Karen, and thank you to everyone up there helping the animals! I saw Karen on Kare 11 yesterday and she did great!
Our dog Shiloh came from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue through TLC Canine rescue. I wish I could find out more about Shiloh, where she came from and how she came to be at the rescue. All I know is she was born in February 2010 and TLC Canine rescue fostered her.
Shiloh is such a joy in our lives and she is so smart too. We have only had her since August and she has really blossomed. She has a wonderful personality and is learning the names of all her toys. Shiloh just turned one in February and she is so loved and spoiled. You need to know that all your work does pay off and good homes are found for these animals.
I have attached pictures of Shiloh so you can see what a beautiful dog she has become. She is such a loving dog and very affectionate. Without Karen and people like you, I would hate to think of what would have been Shiloh's fate. She is such a blessing and we love her dearly!
I wanted to personally thank everyone for all your help and hard, hard work. One by one you are saving these lives and spreading joy. Thank you, thank you, thank you! God Bless!
UPDATE ON SHILOH FROM LAUREN & MIKE: We went down to visit Shiloh in her Chicago home again right before Christmas.
We took her and her sister, Charley, to a park, where they ran around and played.
Shiloh absolutely loves rolling in the snow! She seemed so happy and carefree, which is a big change from what her life was like on the reservation.
Her human dad owns Nate's Natural Pet Supplies in Lincoln Park, where Shiloh gets to hang out and greet customers.
She lays by the door and asks for attention or falls alseep in the sunlight. She is very much loved in her forever home. Her dad says she's the best thing to happen to him since he adopted his first dog, Charley.
We will continue to check in and visit Shiloh as she'll forever be in our hearts. I've attached a few pics, so everyone can see how happy she is!
Shiloh came into the Red Lake Rosie’s shelter with a large litter of puppies, completely malnourished, and little fur due to chewing lice. After she nursed her litter plus another litter of pups, she was set free to roam with the pack at the shelter.
SHILOH BEFOREShiloh was shy and did not let humans touch her much. She missed 3 transports to the Twin Cities because she did not want to be caught. Finally, she was rounded up and brought to the Cities, where Pet Haven took her in. She stayed at Auntie Ruth’s as she needed a place where she could be with lots of dogs and have access to outdoors at all times. This made the transition into a home much easier for her.
SHILOH AFTERWe had transported Shiloh and fallen in love with her, so we decided to foster her through Pet Haven until she could find a forever home. That home came from our old friend, Nate. Nate met Shiloh over Memorial Day weekend and fell in love with her, too. His dog, Charley, loved Shiloh at first sight, too.
SHILOH AT WORKSHILOH ON A BREAKTwo weeks later, Nate took Shiloh home to Chicago, where he owns a natural pet food store. Now, Shiloh gets to hang out in the store with Charley while Nate works. She loves to lie in the entrance of the store and greet customers as they come in. She’s adjusting well to life in a big city. (She’s still scared of the train, but that thing is really loud!)
SHILOH AT PLAYWho knew that a semi-feral dog from the Red Lake Reservation would now be living the good life in Chicago running a pet food store? She’s a lucky girl! She loves her sister, Charley, and her new dad, Nate. We recently visited her and wanted to share the fun pictures we took. Thanks Red Lake Rosie’s and Pet Haven for all the great work! This girl deserves the whole world and now she’s getting it!
~Lauren & Mike
SHILOH AT RESTA very beautiful story how a semi-feral can, with love and care, become a very nice adoptable dog.
We have others like Shiloh at the shelter now, like Sadie, Snowbelle, Windbird, that if given the chance that Shiloh had, could also be rehabilitated.
Thank you Mike and Lauren, and Pet Haven for giving Shiloh a chance.
Wow, this is the best week ever for the Red Lake dogs in our foster program. We had five of them adopted in just over 8 days!
JULIUSOur boy Julius saved from the woods by Karen of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue-as were all of the dogs listed here-found his forever home on Father's Day. Julius is living out in Lake Elmo in a cabin-like environment which certainly suits a dog from the country. He got along with the cat right away. And lucky for Julius his auntie is Danielle a trainer from Canine Coach. So if he has any questions about training his new parents he knows who to call.
HUNTERHunter now Mick has a cushy life in Apple Valley. He has a work from home mom, lots of woods to explore, and a deck just for lounging on a Sunday morning. This dog came in to Karen's with a tongue that had been badly burned. He is still learning how to use it again. Here is what the new mom had to say, " We left him home alone for a couple of hours last night and he was fine. Before we left we wondered if we should close the door to the laundry room where we keep all our shoes. Paul said "No they are mostly your shoes he can chew those if he wants". Arriving home there was one shoe in the center of the living room (undamaged) and it was a great big ol' mens tennis shoe. HA Good Boy Mick!"
COPPERCopper now Duncan lives with a Golden named Cooper-hence the name change. He has kept his new parents busy trying to figure out how to keep him from climbing the fence. Duncan seems to think the grass is greener, the people are more friendly, and the squirrels much more interesting on the other side. Sometimes the rez dogs take a bit to settle into city life. Stay tuned for photos of Duncan's new hairdo. The groomer worked on his coat for over two hours.
ZEKEZeke our little terrier mix went to live with a family that had adopted a Pet Haven dog in the past. The parents are retired so Zeke will not be home alone for long. And the 16 year old son has lots of sports events to attend with his new dog. Zeke has come a long way from living alone behind a gas station.
SHILOHShiloh found her new home with a friend of her fosters. He owns a natural pet food store and takes the dogs with him to work everyday. He has another rescue dog that is a bit shy too just like Shiloh-or Shy-bun bun as her fosters called her. Congratulations to all these poochies and their new families! Thank you for considering rescue dogs.
And a big shout out thank you to Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for all she does for the homeless dogs and cats on the Red Lake reservation.
MORE NEWS FROM PET HAVEN DOG BLOG: Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Saturday's small dog adoption event at the Calhoun Chuck & Don's was wagging with excitement as potential adopters poured in to admire our newest intakes.
CHUCKYChucky (another Red Lake dog) was the star of the show...he had a line of families waiting one after the other for the opportunity to spend a few minutes getting to know this cute little dude. So many great applications were received...Chucky will be in his forever home real soon!
Mike and I had another enjoyable weekend up at Rosie's. It was great to see the new shed - there is so much space in it! Mike will be hauling up some heavy duty shelving for it this coming weekend, which will make it much more organized.
MIKE & BOBCATWhile we were up there, we helped move straw, care for the animals, and socialize the shy ones. Mike drove around the new Bobcat to move the straw, which made it so much easier than when we used to do it with the wheelbarrow!!
SNOWBELLE & SADIESadie and Snowbelle were sisters who I fell in love with!
SADIESadie had escaped from their kennel and was being picked on by the other dogs. I got her to go back in the kennel with her sister, which Snowbelle appreciated. Snowbelle looked so sad in the kennel without her sister, Sadie.
SNOWBELLE & SADIEThe girls were shy at first, but once they trusted me, they were fighting for attention and pets from me. It was so cute! They love to play together, too. These girls really need to get into a foster home soon, where they can learn that humans aren't so bad.
LAURA & PANDORAPandora, a.k.a. Pandy, was a little brindle colored girl who arrived on Saturday night. We originally thought that maybe her pelvis was broken, but by the next morning we knew that it wasn't by the way she was wobbling around. She was so hungry and thirsty that we thought maybe her condition was due to malnourishment. However, on the car ride home, Pandy had some kind of seizure, so we knew it was probably more than just malnourishment. Thank goodness Dr. Vicki from Act V Rescue took this little girl. Pandy is seeing a neurological specialist soon to determine what is wrong with her.
MARIGOLDMarigold was a another dog we transported back to the metro. She is a gorgeous girl who just needs some love and attention. She is shy and hard to catch, but enjoys being pet once she can trust you.
MARIGOLDI got some great shots of this adorable girl!
TOM TOMTomTom was one of the cats we brought back with us, too. When he was in his cage, all he wanted was to be pet. I was so surprised that he was a barn cat! He thoroughly enjoyed the many long petting sessions I gave him. One of his eyes was very infected and one of his front legs looked sore. It looks as if he had been bitten by another cat. He went to Feline Rescue, where I'm sure he will receive the medical attention he needs.
It was so great seeing Karen and all the animals once again! We enjoy our time up in Red Lake so much and will surely be visiting again soon.
-Lauren
SHILOH P.S. We are fostering Shiloh, a Red Lake dog, who Pet Haven took in. She had turned into one of the best dogs! She isn't very shy or timid anymore and is really loving life!
LAUREN & PUPSMike and I went up to help out Karen for a few days at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue January 8-11.
PUP ONEPUP TWOWe absolutely love going up to see all the animals and help out in any way. While we were up there, we helped with watering, feeding, walking, and organized the supply bins in cat house.
RLRR IN WINTERIt was freezing on Saturday morning (my eyelashes froze together!), but other than that, the weather was fine.
HERMIEBISCUITWe had two cats, Hermie and Biscuit, come and spend time with us in the bedroom for two of the nights. They were such great little cats - playful and loving! Hermie went to Tri-County and Biscuit to an RLRR foster home.
SUKAOn Sunday, we drove to Redby to pick up a medium sized white dog, who we named Suka. She was scared at first, but we managed to get a slip lead around her and into the van. Back at the shelter, Suka was very happy to get some food. She ate the whole bowl of food and downed water like there was no tomorrow. We let her into our room for awhile that night and she turned out to be a sweetheart. She absolutely loved getting brushed and pet - things I'm sure she has rarely, if ever, received in her life. Suka will be looking for a warm home where she can gets tons of TLC.
BIG REDWhile in Redby, we also picked up another dog who appeared to have blood on his neck and back. It turned out to only be tomato sauce, so we were relieved. We named him Big Red because of his gorgeous strawberry blonde coloring. He was very happy to have some dog food and ate a ton. He is a big sweetheart, as well! While petting him in his kennel, he laid his head in my lap and rolled over to get his belly rubbed. He has already been neutered, which is great news! Big Red is also looking for a foster home where he can get plenty of belly rubs!
SHILOHShiloh is a dog who has been at the shelter for awhile. She came in nursing 12 pups - some of her own, some from another litter. After she was done nursing them, she took over for Jaycee, who was tired of nursing her own pups. Shiloh runs around with the pack of dogs at the shelter and is extremely hard to catch. Even though she'll come up to people, she shies away if anyone gets too close to her or makes an advance. Mike and I were trying to build a trust with her, so we could hopefully catch her and have her go to a Pet Haven foster home. Well, I caught her and she was taken into a secure kennel. However, when she was being taken on a walk, she chewed through the slip lead and was gone!
The evening before the transport, we were desperately trying to catch her again. We finally cornered her under the car and got a leash around her neck. We took her inside to spend the night with us and sleep in a comfy bed. We are so glad this girl got to be on the transport! She is very, very sweet once she gets to know you. She loves to roll over and get her belly rubbed, too. I know she will make a loyal and loving companion to someone special one day.
JAZZMonday came quickly and we had to leave to get back to our own furballs. We transported 19 animals out of the shelter: 10 cats and kittens went to Tri-County, 1 cat and 2 small dogs went to RLRR fosters, 3 pups went to MARS, 1 pup went to Animal Angels and 2 dogs went to Pet Haven.

STARVING DOXIEKAREN SAYS: We want to thank Lauren & Mike for all their hard work and commitment to the animals at the shelter. We look forward to their every visit.
