Bonnie Snowbelle spends Christmas in her new home

UPDATE FROM LAUREN:
This is why I foster: Snowbelle, (formerly Bonnie, now Siggy), came to me after being attacked by a dog and had a large, open wound on one of her back legs. She limped and was malnourished.

She's been in her forever home for a week now and is being spoiled and loved by her new parents. Makes me smile :-)

Spring at RLRR = MUD + cleanup

Mike and I went up for a weekend visit mid-April. It was so muddy, but we were glad to get up to the shelter regardless.

SPRING MUD
When we walked into the cathouse, we couldn't believe how clean and organized everything was. Karen's had a helper up at the shelter, Geri, does such a great job with the cats and keeps everything in order.

CATHOUSEThere were some great cats up there, as usual.

BOSSMANPottsie a.k.a. Bossman has the most beautiful tabby colorings and loves to give hugs when he's picked up.

SHARMAINESharmaine is a gorgeous girl with the palest blue eyes I've ever seen.

HERMANHerman was my favorite, though. He was at the shelter the last time I visited, but has made vast improvements since then. He had a lot of missing hair, which has now grown back. All of his scratches have healed up and he seems so happy. He came from a barn, where he and the other cats had to find food of their own. I'm sure poor Herman had to fight with the other tom cats to survive out there.

HERMANYou would never know that Herman came from rough beginnings. He is all about getting attention. He rolls around and around just loving all the pets we gave him.

And we can't forget the great dogs at the shelter!

BATMANBatman was a somewhat new arrival. He was timid at first, but once we got him out of his kennel, he couldn't get enough love. He's a very handsome shepherd, but is far too thin at the moment. He will be a big bundle of joy once he puts on weight.

BATMANHis favorite thing in the world is his ball, so we brought him out in the field and played ball with him until he was all worn out.

SNOWBELLEI had to include a picture of my favorite shelter dog, Snowbelle. I met her last April and look forward to seeing her every time I visit.

SINEADWe left with only one animal - little Simba. She is now named Sinead and I'm pretty sure my Mom will be keeping her. She had a crippled front leg that had to be amputated the day before we came up to the shelter. Now, she is getting pampered while she heals up.

Thanks to Karen and Geri for making this visit terrific!

KAREN'S COMMENTS:
Spring has sprung at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue which usually brings the mud. The landscape is saturated right now, so getting around the shelter is a challenge requiring rubber boots, and a good attitude.

MUD DOGSMike and Lauren as well as Jill spent time trudging through the mud and making the best of it. The dogs actually seem to enjoy running through the puddles, and lapping up the black water, even though they have clean drinking water available to them. (It tastes sooo good!)

STORAGE SHED ORGANIZEDThe storage shed, which was a disaster got a major makeover with Mike and Lauren who spent a whole day on this job.

Geri spend lots of time mopping the cathouse floor as mud gets tracked in by the volunteers and the doggies who come in.

MUD BOBCATWhen the frost leaves the ground, the water soon starts to disappear. We hope to get more #5 gravel on the road and in front of the storage shed to make traveling easier.

Happy spring everyone!!

Shepherd sisters, Snowbelle & Sadie

I wanted to blog about 2 dogs Karen has up at the shelter.

SADIESadie and Snowbelle are adorable Shep Mix sisters who have been at the shelter for quite some time now. I met them back in April, when Snowbelle escaped out of the kennel and left Sadie all by herself.

SNOWBELLENow, they live outside - not in kennels - and stick around the shelter because of the food provided to them. Sadie is the darker sister and Snowbelle is the lighter one. They are shy girls and hesitant to human touch. However, if approached slowly, they will allow some petting.

SNOWBELLEWhen I was up at the shelter last week, I took my time and slowly pet both girls, who seemed to enjoy the attention. They are very sweet babies, just unsure about humans. These girls have been roaming around the shelter for too long and need to get into foster homes. Sadie, being a bit smaller than most of the shelter pack, is starting to get picked on. So, a foster home would really help her out!

SADIEI filled up Kongs with frozen dog food and the girls absolutely loved the treat.
If you or your rescue has a foster opening, please consider one of these sweet girls! They would benefit so much from a loving home to show them that humans can be really nice!

Thanks,
Lauren

Lauren & Mike's recent weekend at RLRR

Mike and I had another enjoyable weekend up at Rosie's. It was great to see the new shed - there is so much space in it! Mike will be hauling up some heavy duty shelving for it this coming weekend, which will make it much more organized.

MIKE & BOBCATWhile we were up there, we helped move straw, care for the animals, and socialize the shy ones. Mike drove around the new Bobcat to move the straw, which made it so much easier than when we used to do it with the wheelbarrow!!

SNOWBELLE & SADIESadie and Snowbelle were sisters who I fell in love with!

SADIESadie had escaped from their kennel and was being picked on by the other dogs. I got her to go back in the kennel with her sister, which Snowbelle appreciated. Snowbelle looked so sad in the kennel without her sister, Sadie.

SNOWBELLE & SADIEThe girls were shy at first, but once they trusted me, they were fighting for attention and pets from me. It was so cute! They love to play together, too. These girls really need to get into a foster home soon, where they can learn that humans aren't so bad.

LAURA & PANDORAPandora, a.k.a. Pandy, was a little brindle colored girl who arrived on Saturday night. We originally thought that maybe her pelvis was broken, but by the next morning we knew that it wasn't by the way she was wobbling around. She was so hungry and thirsty that we thought maybe her condition was due to malnourishment. However, on the car ride home, Pandy had some kind of seizure, so we knew it was probably more than just malnourishment. Thank goodness Dr. Vicki from Act V Rescue took this little girl. Pandy is seeing a neurological specialist soon to determine what is wrong with her.

MARIGOLDMarigold was a another dog we transported back to the metro. She is a gorgeous girl who just needs some love and attention. She is shy and hard to catch, but enjoys being pet once she can trust you.

MARIGOLDI got some great shots of this adorable girl!

TOM TOMTomTom was one of the cats we brought back with us, too. When he was in his cage, all he wanted was to be pet. I was so surprised that he was a barn cat! He thoroughly enjoyed the many long petting sessions I gave him. One of his eyes was very infected and one of his front legs looked sore. It looks as if he had been bitten by another cat. He went to Feline Rescue, where I'm sure he will receive the medical attention he needs.

It was so great seeing Karen and all the animals once again! We enjoy our time up in Red Lake so much and will surely be visiting again soon.

-Lauren

SHILOH
P.S. We are fostering Shiloh, a Red Lake dog, who Pet Haven took in. She had turned into one of the best dogs! She isn't very shy or timid anymore and is really loving life!
