I don't know where Karen got this, but she wanted to share the laugh. I especially enjoyed the sounds of suppressed laughter in the background.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Foster Program
In addition to relying on many animal rescue groups to help find homes for the homeless dogs and cats of Red Lake, RLRR also has a small foster care program of their own.
These dedicated volunteers provide temporary homes and special care for dogs and cats that are too young or sick or unsocialized for immediate placement. A foster home prepares them for a forever home.
The dogs and cats of Red Lake come in every size, color and pattern. Some of these photos are from "Meet & Greet" events where the fosters caregivers bring their animals to a place where the public can come and learn more about Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

April 11 Transport
Mike and Lauren have been at the RLRR shelter volunteering once again. They arrived on Friday and left Sunday morning with two cats and five dogs to be placed at Act V, All Dog, Feline Rescue, and RLRR foster homes.
As usual they did lots of work in the shelter yard and socializing animals. A feral juvenile dog named Sadie was loose in the yard and we could not catch her. Lauren was able to gain her trust and put her in a kennel with her sister.
PANDORA AND LAUREN
During their visit, a puppy arrived at the shelter -- we called her Pandora or Pandy for short. This little girl was so hungry and dehydrated. She also could not walk. We could get her to stand for a little while, then she would slip and fall.
PANDORA
The good news is that Pandy joined the transport and is headed to Act V and Dr. Vickie. We are so thankful that Pandy arrived and got out just in time.
ANDY
Andy, a small wire-haired terrier, is also going to Act V. He has been ill for about 5 days. We kept him alive with sub-cu feedings, antibiotics, and NutriCal and are thankful he will be getting great care by Dr. Vickie, too.
TOM TOM
Tom Tom was a stray barn cat that lived on a rural farm. He has an eye that is sore and a front leg that has a wound. We got him neutered and immunized on Friday- and when he came back to the shelter he was so friendly and loveable, we talked the farmers in to letting him leave the barn life and find a forever home. Feline Rescue is taking him and we just know, with his personality, he will really make a great companion.
CHI CHI
Pretty Chi Chi was a surrender at the last clinic and is also enroute to Feline Rescue.
MARIGOLD
Marigold is a little stray shepherd headed to All Dog. Marigold is spayed and vaccinated but needs lots of tlc.
WINSTON
Poor tiny Winston came in with severe mange. He started treatment at RLRR and is going to a RLRR foster home.
EDDY
Eddy, the little brown chihuahua is also going to a RLRR foster home.

Bringing a smile to Miley
Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took in this darling puppy that we called Fluffy, then she moved to Secondhand Hounds rescue, was adopted and became Miley.
FLUFFY BABY
UPDATE ONE:
Hello!
Just wanted to share with you how much Miley has grown! And most of all how much we are enjoying her! She's very silly with a I just wanna play play play attitude.
BEAUTIFUL MILEY
We've had 3 weeks of obedience classes---3 more to go, she's very smart and it's mainly us who needs the training. :) When we frustrate her or doing something not to her liking she gives us one loud bark.
MILEY IN TRAINING
She's mastered the tunnel in agility and now we're working on hoops and the wiggle board (can't remember what it's called-helps them learn how to use their back legs), she'll start jumps later, about 17 months, when her bones are done growing.
We have to put our 2 older dogs down soon, we are struggling, it's sooo hard. Having Miley around sure helps!

UPDATE TWO:
Hi Karen--
With her rough start in life, it makes sense why it took Miley a while to really 'love' us. Just in the last few weeks she has started showing her affection towards us.
MILEY AND T
She is a bit submissive too but we socialize her as much as we can and it has gotten better. Our trainer said being a submissive dog isn't all bad anyways. Not sure of the reasons but works for me. :)
MILEY AND DAD
That's my husband with Miley--our 1st time snowshoeing, her & our daughter, T running tunnels and laying in bed together, the other one is Miley and our cat Pumpkin. Miley's trying very hard to mind her manners!
MILEY AND PUMPKIN
Pumpkin doesn't defend himself and Miley would love to lick/smell him to death! He lets out a loud meow until we save him.
Thanks for all you do for the animals!

Jonnie Cakes: Transformed
What a wonderful update on dear Jonnie Cakes, who was found roped to a garbage dumpster in Ponemah. She was starving and full of mange. Now look at her.
Karen :)
JONNIE CAKES BEFORE
FROM PET HAVEN VOLUNTEER:
I met Lizzie (formerly Jonnie Cakes) at the Three Rivers Dog Park yesterday.
"JC" had been adopted prior to me joining Pet Haven so I had no idea I was playing with a Pet Haven dog until I started talking to Lizzie's mom, Nancy.
Lizzie was having a wonderful time running around the park yesterday, herding all of the other dogs. Nancy was just the proudest Mom telling the other dog owners how smart Lizzie is and how well she has done with her training.
She can't believe the progress that they've made in just six months. Lizzie is a very sweet girl, a non-discriminating friend when it comes to both dogs and humans!
JONNIE CAKES (NOW LIZZIE) TODAY
I spent quite a bit of time talking to Nancy about all sorts of things and I truly believe that Lizzie found Nancy, just as much Nancy found Lizzie. They are great friends!
Just wanted to share this happy tail with you all...another very successful adoption story!

Spring Clean-up at RLRR
On March 25, we had some visitors at the shelter. Marci and Tom adopted Molly from Red Lake and they have supplied us with updates about her for the blog. She was at the vet in Gonvick getting spayed so Tom and Marci came and worked for the day and helped with spring cleaning.
We worked in the yard most of the day cleaning straw and leaves and had a noon break for soup.
Kevin, Karen, Marci and Tom raked and cleaned and did some burning, which nearly got away, but thankfully was gotten in control. The Bobcat helps make the jobs so much easier.
A great time was had by all. Thank you Kevin, Marci and Tom!!
Karen

It seems appropriate to include the DNA test Tom & Marci recently received from BioPet Vet Lab for Molly:
Molly's ancestry was listed approximately equal parts Boxer, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever.
Tom and I are so excited! We just got Molly's DNA test back.
It is amazing that the descriptions they provided are Molly exactly, especially the Boxer part! Tom has always commented on how she plays with her toys like a cat; throwing them in the air and catching them. I said I have never seen a dog that used her front paws for everything. She is constantly digging under furniture for her toys and uses her paws like we use our hands.
It also explains the protectiveness of Tom and I; between the German Shepherd and the Boxer, they are fiercely loyal dogs and make great watchdogs.
We are so pleased and we feel that the results are extremely accurate; and not really what we expected at all. Although she looks like a lab, she has the least of lab and golden in her.
Boxers are also extremely intelligent and very stubborn; Molly to a tee!
We feel it was worth every penny to find out Molly's origins and we feel they are extremely accurate, based upon what we have seen and learned about Molly since we adopted her.

Ode featured in Lyndale Neighborhood News
AS PUBLISHED IN THE LYNDALE NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
Written by Randy Ferguson
In a city considered relatively “small” it’s amazing how we can live near someone and never really know much about them; possibly never talking to them. It’s not that we aren’t capable of such interaction or that we wouldn’t find things in common. It just appears that in our lives, which always seem so busy, we don’t take the time to make the initial connection.
Pets however, seem to be a particularly good icebreaker. In many ways they create an instant bond and source of conversation and sometimes can even bring total strangers together as is the case with Pat and Pam.
It was the summer of 2008 when longtime Lyndale resident Pat found herself in a quandary. Finishing her PhD in psychology required working long 10 hour days at her internship without nearly enough time to care for her Terrier mix Annie. She needed a dog-walker. A posting to the Lyndale E-Group brought her just the relief she needed.
As it turns out the E-Group goes beyond the boundary of the Lyndale Neighborhood. In this case Pam, a resident of Kingfield and a pet lover herself, responded to Pat’s request. Her doggy daycare services were put into action and Pam was soon on a twice-weekly walking schedule with Annie.
ODE
It wasn’t long before Pam adopted a pooch named Ode (o-DAY) and needed to figure out how to take care of both dogs. Not knowing how the two might interact they slowly introduced the long legged, 50 lb., energetic pup to demure Annie at a third her size. While no one would mistake the two for best buddies they certainly have fun when they are together.
Pam does say that it was sometimes a challenge to have both on leashes with their different walking styles and wonders what neighbors thought of what probably looked like a “mad scarf dance.” Over time, Pat and Pam would get together on walks or play in the yard with their dogs and a friendship developed in the process. As well, Pam met quite a few new people as she traversed the two neighborhoods. One of those encounters led to adopting a stray cat found in a back woodpile.
Pat has since received her PhD and now holds a schedule that allows her to spend the time she needs to with Annie. She knows that she wouldn’t have been able to make it without Pam’s help and considers her a true friend. She never had to worry about Annie’s wellbeing in the loving and trustworthy care of Pam.
It’s hard to say how the good deeds we do will affect our lives. Pat and Pam may have passed by each other for years without ever talking. But the karmic, serendipitous events that occurred have made this city just a little bit smaller.
Annie (named after the Orphan) was found by Pat in 2007 after a devastating loss the week before of her previous dog. Although she was grungy, stinky, and in need of vet care, Pat remembers the likeness of Annie to her former dog with her brown button eyes and charcoal coloring. When no one claimed her, Annie became a permanent resident of the Lyndale Neighborhood.
Ode (o-DAY an Ojibwe word for heart) was also a rescue. Pam discovered her through the websites of pethavenmn.org and redlakerosie.org. She was just a pup but had suffered severe abuse and had stubs for ears due to intentional burning. You can see more of her story at www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Chs4COl8zw.
