On Tuesday, May 15th, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue got a call from the Circle Pines Housing Project that Smiley, a small breed male dog, was attacked by another dog four days ago, and is very ill.
He has a badly infected bone in the rear leg and has, what the local vet thinks, is blood in the lungs.
Smiley spent the night at the Gonvick vet and they gave an assessment and treated him with antibiotcs and pain meds.
He was at the Red Lake Rosie Shelter for only one day before Dr. Bartsch and Lindsay of Akin Hills responded to our call for help and agreed to take Smiley.
Thankfully Nancy O'Sullivan and Nancy Blanck answered the impromptu call and transported Smiley on Thursday, May 17th.
Nancy also transported a litter of orphan kits (baby rabbits-
waboose) who were left orphaned when their mama was killed near the Bemidji area. The rabbits are going to Wild and Free, Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, in Garrison, MN.
Thank you to all the transporters and rescue groups taking these animals in so quickly and efficiently. We have the greatest network in the whole world!
Peace- Karen Good

Dara & her pups
On May 21st, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue got a call that a stray mama husky was just giving birth to puppies at a residence east of Redby. At that time she had given bith to four pups. The Red Lake Rosie Rescue van arrived the next morning and we found a litter of 9 born behind a screen door propped up against the wall of the house. One was deceased and the other tiny babies were taken into a crate and the mama, we called Dara, went in eagerly with some food.
Dara was a young girl, perhaps 9 months old, and no doubt this was her first (and last) litter. She was in poor condition suffering malnourishment, dehydration, and was infested with ticks. We treated the ticks right away and got her loaded with her pups and they were off to the shelter.
Once tucked in her kennel, she proved to be a great mother dedicated to feeding her pups. It did not take long for the good donated food we get to make her bags fill up with milk. We noticed one of the babies was missing a foot, apparently the inexperienced mama had bitten off the foot while she was biting off the umbelical cord during delivery.
Thankfully, she only had to spend 4 days at the shelter and then was off to St. Francis of Assissi Animal Rescue to a foster home. She was transported by the O'Sullivan's, Barbie, and Dee Dee on to her new home on May 26th.
Thank you all for helping get Dara and her family on to a life where she will not have to suffer, and have more litters that would have been homeless. A special thanks to SFAAR for taking Dara and giving her a chance.
Sincerely, Karen RLRR

MUSHR pups from RLRR
UPDATE FROM MUSHR:
Both Dublin and Dorsey (formerly Cheyenne and Shiloh) were adopted through MUSHR (Minnesota's Unwanted Siberian Husky Rescue) and went to great homes! They were signed up for puppy classes and I believe they are probably going to them currently.
I've attached a couple of pics. They are so darn cute!.

I'd say that's an understatement. They've come a LONG way!!

Wiggle on, Geronimo!
Geronimo lost an eye in a dog attack before coming to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. He transferred to Act V on the Mother's Day transport and he is one happy boy now! He moved to a foster home and is ready for adoption.
Geronimo is going to be a big boy; he was 45 lbs at just 17 weeks old, but he is all puppy. Foster home reports that he has huge feet and a wiggle-butt. "He hasn't stopped wiggling except when he wants cuddles!"
Geronimo is also on petfinder.com and the ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation website:
Geronimo

Geronimo...!! This is our one-eyed wiggler. It's true, he lost an eye in a fight. But this puppy couldn't care less! He's living in foster care with another dog who plays and romps with him and he is thriving. He needs a family that doesn't care about his eye and will focus on making this big boy a part of their family. He will be adopted in the Twin Cities area only and his fee is $350. Geronimo is a FUN dog and if you'd like to meet him, email us! (info@actvrescue.org)

Crates & Volunteers needed for June clinic
Hi,
We need to round up all of our crates that are "out there." Once again, we have lost track of many, especially medium-size ones, from our transports.
Please let me know if you have some, so I can arrange getting them back before the clinic.
Also, we are in need of a couple more volunteers to help at the clinic. If any of you can arrange to come, or know others who might be interested, please let me know.
Thanks,
DeeDee

Lots of Good News for Sage!
Check out that smile!!
Sage, the other dog recently from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue with the injured neck, is healing well and looking much more interested in life around her!
Sage got her stitches out and a bath. That had to feel good and she is even fluffier now :-)
And, Guess What Else??!
Sage is on Petfinder.com!
German Shepherd Dog Mix: An adoptable dog in Bloomington, MN
Medium • Baby • Female
This is Sage. She arrived from Northern MN and surrendered after being terribly neglected. She had a rubber band around her neck that required surgery to repair. BUT! This puppy is good to go...! She is approximately 16 weeks old and living in foster care with another German Shepherd. She is thriving and loves to be in the companionship of other dogs (and her humans.) She is still working on crate training but almost has it down perfectly! She is a quiet pup and is looking for the perfect family. She will only be adopted in the Twin Cities area. If you would like to meet Sage, email info@actvrescue.org Her adoption fee is $350

Sad eyes of suffering
If a collar could tell a story, this collar would tell you about the many months of suffering that Brian, a black long-haired terrier went through as his flesh gave way because the collar would not. Red Lake Rosie's Rescue had heard about this dog with an embedded collar from Avis, our Redby community member that takes care of the dump and has saved many dogs and cats.
A puppy collar had been left on what is now on an large adult dog. It smelled foul and was full of pus and rotting flesh.
Carol and Nate had looked for this dog during our Akin clinic on March 3rd, but had no luck. Carol had also spotted Brian after that and left food, however, he ran off as he was very frightened. Carol thought it would be hopeless.
May 9th, Carol and I were driving in the Redby area and Carol shouted "There's the dog with the collar!" We stopped the van in the middle of the street and began to figure out a strategy to catch Brian and relieve his suffering which was unbearable for us to see.
We could not believe he could still be alive!
All I could do was hold the crate and pray for success while Carol with her usual magical way of dealing with dogs began to talk to him, got on her knees and before long he approached her and she hand-fed him, then grabbed him around the middle and into the crate. He was so frightened and was nipping at her, but Carol was brave and determined to help Brian.
Brian's neck was rotting and had a 4-inch area of rotting flesh which smelled so foul we had to open out windows as we drove rejoicing over our good fortune -- At last we had this poor dog that had haunted us.
We continued to pick up the rest of our dogs and cats on our list, and then Brian got a ride to the Clearwater Vet Clinic where he got the collar removed, and was on an IV with antibiotics for the night.
Once again, Dr. Vickie and Act V stepped forward to take Brian. He left our care in the Mother's Day transport.
Before Brian was transported to Act V, he spent the weekend with Carol in Bemidji. He had more personal attention which he really needed. Brian is young and very big-boned -- he looks like a Giant Schnauzer or Irish Wolfhound mix. He is terribly thin.
Thank you to Carol, who now is my forever fearless hero, Dr. Vickie and Act V and transporters!!
Sincerely, Karen
UPDATE FROM ACT V Rescue and Rehabilitation Tuesday 5.15:
Brian's surgery was done yesterday. He was painful the first couple of hours post-op but Vicki was able to get him comfortable. She said his neck was worse than Sage's. But no more! He is now on the road to recovery.
AND A FURTHER UPDATE FROM ACT V:
Brian's neck is healing beautifully. He's about a week behind Sage. Pretty soon his stitches and staples will come out and he'll be ready for foster care. He is really shy but very treat / food motivated. Nice, nice boy...
UPDATE TODAY:
Brian is heading to his foster home on Saturday :-)

Special Mother's Day transport
Mother's Day was special this year. Karen and Carol of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue met the O'Sullivans enroute to the Leech Lake Pound and then on to Motley. There they met Heidi, Jen, and Barbie to take the animals on to their new foster homes and shelters in the metro.
ALMAA little cat found in a tree in Ponemah was brought to the shelter and only spent two days here before Feline Rescue took Alma in. Now she has a bright future.
BOBBI & BARBIEBobbi Ann and Barbie are two juvenile homeless kittens that were found on the White Earth Reservation by Nancy, a teacher at the school. These girls went to AHS where they will be spayed and adopted out.
CHESSYChessy was a stray puppy in Red Lake that went to Animal Ark where there was already a call for a blue-eyed husky. She came in shy but came around real nicely.
PRINCESSPrincess was accepted by All Dog Rescue when they learned that her family became homeless and could no longer keep her. We have hopes for Princess now that she has a foster home to help her heal her heart.
PARISRADARAvis found two puppies at the Redby garbage dump and brought them to the shelter. Paris and Radar both went to All Dog. Both were beautiful animals and so sad that people think that animals are garbage! Avis keeps a watch on the Redby dump and is doing a great job!
LYLELeah and Lyle are two darling pups that came from Ponemah. Tony gave them a ride to the shelter. They, too, went to All Dog.
SAPPHIRESapphire, a very lovely husky shepherd mix, was found at the Red Lake garbage dump during the April clinic. She was rescued by Carol and is so happy to go to a foster home with All Dog.
ANNA BANANAAnna Banana was a return from Tricounty. This little girl was adopted once and returned when the family moved, so we got her back. Now she is off to Pet Haven to a foster home.
BRIANBrian was among the riders going to Act V for necessary neck surgery. We'll share much more about him in the days to come.
JOE, NANCY, CAROL, TOMWe appreciate the partnerships we have and teamwork that helps more animals than we could have imagined a few years ago. We appreciate how all the transporters and rescues respond to the needs of the animals we find. And, as always, thanks to the people whose financial support -- large and small -- helps us to get emergency medical care for the animals as needed.
Sincerely, Karen RLRR

Homeless Princess
Princess is a female shep mix that lived with her family in Colorado for the past 8 years. She was loved and cared for by her mom and dad, but now, due to a series of bad luck and unemployment, the family is homeless.
Homelessness not only affects people, but also animals that are caught in the middle. The family made it to Red Lake and moved into the homeless shelter. They are looking for housing and the opportunities they are left with do not allow Princess to join them.
I picked up Princess yesterday, took her to the vet and had her spayed and vaccinated. She appears in very nice shape, but she is depressed due to losing her family.
I felt so bad to hear her crying as we drove away from the homeless shelter and really felt even more badly for her than the other reservation homeless strays, because she has a family that loves her and it tore out her little heart. Most of the homeless animals we rescue from the streets and dumps really have no human connection, so they are happy to come to the shelter, but Princess is grieving her family.
The good good news is that All Dog Rescue has a foster home for her so Princess only spent a few nights at the shelter before leaving on a transport on Mother's Day to her new home.
I am grateful for your support that allows us to help animals like Princess.
Sincerely, Karen

Crimson is now Sora
These were my Red Lake fosters (Crimson, Clover and Chester - Crimson is the one in the front of the puppy pile) from last Oct.
I recently received beautiful photos and a video of her along with an e-mail update.
Linda
UPDATE FROM NEW HOME:
This is Sora in her first week of nosework. She's all 'business' now. Loves loves LOVES the find the treat game! If she continues to love it, I may try to compete with her. It does wonders for her self-confidence.
