Mama Dog shot; one of three puppies caught

A call came to Red Lake Rosie’s early one morning asking us to please help a dog called “Mama Dog”. The owner feared that she had been shot and would die. She saw a puncture wound on her side and Mama Dog was “breathing funny” she said.

In questioning the lady we found out that Mama Dog had 3 puppies that were now larger and semi-feral. I told her that she needed to drop the Mama Dog off at the Cornerstone Vet and also the puppies.

Mama Dog’s x-rays showed a collapsed lung and a bullet lodged in her neck. She was spayed and vaccinated and came to the shelter to recuperate. We administer antibiotics and pain medication daily to her.

Thankfully, Mama Dog began to eat on day 2 and is rapidly improving. She exercises each day and seems happy in spite of her trauma. The bullet will not be removed as long as it is not causing problems.

Only one of the puppies has been caught so far -a male I named Chinook. Chinook is a beautiful pure white/cream husky about 12 - 14 weeks old.

CHINOOK

Poor little Chinook was shut down in a kennel. Pet Haven kindly accepted him into their foster program and it wasn’t long that he was overcoming his fear and was being socialized.

We are still waiting for the other 2 pups to be captured and brought to the shelter so they too can be socialized and have hope for a good life as a part of a family. Only half of this family is safe and we are hoping to get the other half.

Update Received December 2012: What a sweet girl our new little one is! We are calling her Lucy, as we want a friendly name for the big black dog she is becoming! Smart as a whip, she has us wrapped around her little paw, and is a quick learner. We have had 3 puppy classes now, and she is picking up the ideas rapidly, as we are too of course. She can now sit on command, and the housebreaking is going well too. We always compliment All Dog Rescue, as we feel Linda did a great job of fostering! Thanks to you all!

12 pups to ARVSS

Twelve pups went to ARVSS (Animal Rescue and Veterinary Support Services) in Wisconsin. Each has their own story of survival and how they came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

ASHAAsha was brought to the shelter one night very late. She was found at the Red Lake dump and a very nice lady brought her all the way to the shelter. She is a very sweet girl.

PANSY & PEONY HIDING JACKThe most needy of these are Pansy, Peony and Jack who were found in Red Lake by Carol. They were very mangy, malnourished and dehydrated. They are in good hands with Susie and Matt.

ANITAA little lone pup- Anita was found in Red Lake.

CHINOOKARDONChinook and Ardon came from the Bemidji Pound on their day 5 when they were to be euthanized.

HART SHEPSThe little litter of 4 sheps were brought here by the Harts. We were able to get the mother dog spayed at Cleawater Vet on July 11th so she will have no more pups.

We are thankful that community members take advantage of our spay/neuter program.

Shy Chinook transforming into Sidney

Remember Jared the pup yesterday? This is an update on his sister, Chinook, in her new home. They both were fostered and adopted through ARVSS.

UPDATE FROM NEW FAMILY:
She is doing ok. She is still pretty shy but is coming out of her shell.

She is not a big fan of the snow we got today. She likes to hide under our kitchen table- I think she just feels safe there.

She is very cuddly once you can get a hold of her. Each day is progress though.

We also renamed her Sydney.

Feral pups: Chinook & Jared

On occasion we get feral pups, and if they do not get help right away, sometimes they never get tame.

We sent out two feral pups to Matt & Susie at ARVSS on Saturday January 15th, unsure of the outcome. Karen had dug the litter out of a hole in the ground about 3 weeks ago, and the outlook was not good.

Here's the update we got today and we are very happy and hoping for Chinook and Jared.

Hey Karen,
Gotta tell you this story! I went to bed at about 10:00 last night and woke up to our older RLRR foster barking???

Realized Matt was NOT in bed and went downstairs to find him--he was sleeping on the kitchen floor with the two feral pups all curled up next to him!

I left him there----Had LOTS of room on my bed :)

JAREDFURTHER UPDATE:
We have named the nameless one Jared. We have taken about three trips out into the back yard and he started to play with the other puppies--and even came back to me for treats :) It was good to see his tail up and see him run across the yard--it is a very good start.

Chinook (by the recommendation of our dog behaviorist) is with our Foster Judy--she also has Jasper. They should both do well there.

January 15th transport

It was a very cold Saturday on January 15th. It was pretty important that we get the transport out of 23 dogs and puppies going to the metro, Wisconsin, and Park Rapids. Nancy, Tom, Carolyn, Barbie, and Mike helped get the animals to their destinations safely.

LOTUSLotus, a beautiful female has been at the shelter since August. She came in with a litter. Her litter was placed and she has been spayed and is in great shape. Patti at Second Hand Dogs took her.

EIGHT PUPSThe little litter of 8 pups came from Ponemah with their mother. 6 went to ARVSS in Wisconsin and 2 went to Act V,

YOKONancy took the tranport to Park Rapids. Yoko and a litter of 2 puppies went there.

UPDATE:
Hi Karen !Chinook got adopted today !!! We had a very busy adoption event- I know she went to couple with grown children. The woman stays at home and wants to enjoy a lot of walks with Chinook ! C and I really had a hard time parting with her- she is so lovely ! I will try to get you more of an update soon. We did have another couple that I really liked that wanted " a Chinook " too :) Do you have any other Foxy/ Chinooks up there right now ? They are in demand! Kindly, A.

Here’ s Chinook who went out on last transport and she is a real beauty. She was a homeless dog who lived on the side of the road at Bigstone, and came to the shelter.

She went to Pet Haven and they placed her in a foster home. She would wake up at 3:30 in the morning and howl, like the dogs at Red Lake do at night. The Pet Haven people think that maybe they are talking to their Red Lake friends. I call it the “Coyote choir”. It is beautiful when they all sing together in the night.

Chinook has been adopted now and the new mom dearly loves her!! Thank you to Pet Haven for finding good homes for the Red Lake animals!
