I LOVE this photo of Skye in her new home!

She had very bad mange and is still a little pink-skinned and lacking a full coat, but she sure looks happy -- and so does her Dad.

Too much snow

Dear Friends:

First of all we had about 2 feet of snow and the old straw shed collapsed from the weight of the snow- The roof was about 20 feet high and no way to clear the snow off. Also- with the heavy snow removal the Gehl- skidloader died :(
Now- for the good news--- We are depositing $4,135.00 in the bank tommorrow from the Christmas donations that came in!! We want to thank Twyla for designing the very nice Christmas brochure and all the people who sent card, letters of support and encouragement, and donations.

Also- with the help of the O'Sullivans and the USDA grant we are going to be purchasing the newer Bobcat skidloader and snow blade so we can keep the shelter clear of snow as well as clean kennels.

Also- the roof on the kennels and roundhouse were saved- we cleared off the roundhouse roof 3 times before the snow finally stopped. The dogs who usually like to sleep in the hay shed all escaped without injury.

Sybil settles into her foster home

Karen,

First of all, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do for the dogs. It is truly amazing and you renew my faith in humankind on a daily basis.

Secondly, I wanted to update you on Sybil! I am fostering her and she is doing awesome! We have had 3 off leash trips to the river so far and she is loving it! She is so loyal and never strays far.

At home, she quickly learned that my house is her house, and while, she seems to prefer the wood floor, her super cozy dog bed is ready for her (along with any couch or bed too!) when she wants it. At the moment she is curled up at my feet, sound asleep after a long run.

She is a total sweetheart that has already captured our hearts.

UPDATE: Here new favorite spot is smack in the middle of the guest room bed on the down comforters! We groomed her on Saturday and she looks so beautiful! Thanks so much for getting her out of the cold! She is so great!

A Very Molly Christmas!

Molly is certainly our Christmas puppy! She loves Christmas cookies - no chocolate of course! She will sit, shake, and speak for a cookie; all at one time. She will grab anything she isn't supposed to have like toilet paper rolls, remote controls, and toothbrushes, and run to the counter and wait. Molly wants to "trade" what she isn't supposed to have for a cookie.
She is so smart and she makes us laugh so much! Am sending a few cute pictures of Molly, as we celebrate our Christmas season!

Christmas greetings from some lucky dogs

This Christmas greeting is a continuation of the blog post on last Friday. We want to give thanks this Holiday season to this couple that has chosen to share their lives with four rescued dogs and to everyone else who chooses to rescue their pets.

To really appreciate how wonderful this story is, you must return to the sad orgins of Dylan and Phoenix (aka Cinnamon) at Red Lake.

DYLANDylan was found as a tiny puppy at the garbage dump, starved and almost hairless from mange. Then he developed paralysis in his hind legs. Only through the kindness of Red Lake volunteers and perhaps a bit of a Christmas miracle did this dog survive.

PHOENIXPhoenix came to Red Lake badly starved with a litter of pups. They were found living in an old dog house with no bedding and no food. It was already winter and they would not have survived without rescue.

Look again at the beautiful dogs in the Christmas card. You don't have to know much about dogs to notice how healthy they look now and, perhaps just as importantly, they hold up their heads and their eyes shine. Would you have believed it was possible?

Times are hard at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Last year Karen had a leave of absence from her teaching job, but this year she is working three days a week. She also lost the crucial help of Mike who took a job at the new casino. There is simply too much work for Karen to do and not enough hours to do it.

Winter makes everything harder and the circumstances more dire for homeless animals. On top of all that, there has been an outbreak of parvo. Puppies have died and Karen can't accept others until the risk has subsided.

I'm told she is as exhausted physically and emotionally as her friends have ever seen her. Send a donation if you can or send Karen a card to her address below or a comment on the blog. She needs to know how much her dedication to the animals of Red Lake is appreciated.

Dylan & Phoenix: Best Friends Forever

Dylan was crippled in his rear legs and was taken by to Akin Vet Hospital by Dr. Bartsch and Lauren. What a great update from his new home with another Red Lake dog, Phoenix. Our vet told us we may have to euthanize Dylan, but look at him now!! Karen

PHOENIX & DYLANHi Karen!

I thought I'd give you an update on "Phoenix" (aka Cinnamon) and her new boyfriend "Dylan". When I went to Akin Hills Pet Hospital in Farmington for another reason in September, I was told Dylan was looking for a home again. I remembered him from last fall when he was looking for a home, so I decided to give it a try.

I introduced him and Phoenix at the clinic, but Phoenix did not seem to like him. I decided to try him at home, just to give him a chance. On the third day, I let them sniff each other more and meet each other on a long leash and suddenly Phoenix did a play bow, looked up at me with the happiest grin I've ever seen and ran in tight little circles - I've never seen her so excited. I believe he was a puppy at the same time she had her puppies at Red Lake. Could she have remembered him?

From that moment on, they have been best of friends - constantly playing together - he bites her cheek or leg, and she takes it. She's very gentle with him and they play together like they've known each other forever. He still goes to physical therapy, but he's doing very well.

Dylan is such a beautiful boy, inside and out - we are so lucky to have him. I know Phoenix thinks so too! We are so blessed to have these two wonderful dogs, and two other rescued dogs. My shy white shepherd is even beginning to play more with Dylan around. We are so lucky to have the dogs we have.
