Luke and Aurelia’s Long-Awaited Reunion

At a Red Lake Rosie's Rescue clinic last summer, Aurelia, one of our youth volunteers, made a very special friend. He was a black lab pup named Sam. He was at the clinic and was neutered and vaccinated. During his stay at the clinic he bonded with Aurelia, who is an animal lover with a big heart. Sam was very shy and mistrustful of everyone but Aurelia.

LUKE LOVES AURELIA
Aurelia hoped the family would surrender Sambo so she could help socialize him, but, sadly, it was not to be, and Sam went back home.

As fate would have it, one year later, Aurelia and her mom Kim were once again volunteering at a clinic. Karen got a call that there were two dogs that this person wanted removed from her property. She said the owner no longer lived there and left the two dogs behind. They had been chained, but now were running free.

Karen went to the residence and the two dogs, who were brothers and about 1 ½ years old, were so frightened that Karen could not catch them. Later, with the clinic still in progress, Karen and Jenny Wolfe took a ride to try to pick of the dogs and were lucky enough to run into the previous owner, who came along and caught the two dogs.

They turned out to be Cooper and Sam!!

When Aurelia saw the little black dog- her heart leaped!! They both knew each other and Aurelia held Sam all during the last day of the clinic. Then he went to the shelter where he and his brother remained for the next five weeks.

LUKE AT RLRR
Sam was so shy at the shelter that he hid in the doghouse for 3 weeks and would not let Karen leash him or walk him. When, he finally came out, Karen saw a ray of hope for him. It was another lesson in patience.

Finally on July 26th, Aurelia was reunited with Sam, now renamed Luke, to provide foster care for Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue.

LUKE LIKES TO GO FOR RIDES

UPDATE 1 FROM AURELIA'S MOM, KIM:
Just wanted to tell you what amazing progress Luke is making. He rides beautifully in the car, as you already know. We now have him going in and out of his crate easily!

He plays well with our other dogs, although he does have an issue with food guarding with the other dogs, but not us. With the weather break, Aurelia will be taking him out for a run today to see how he does. Next we'll be taking him out in public to see how he does meeting other people.

He's fine with Rusty, who is a very tall and rather loud person. He even seeks out attention and likes to snuggle.

I am amazed at how smart he is. He understands 'no' and will come when called. Today we'll start with 'sit' and possibly 'down'.

Believe it or not, I think he'll be ready to put up for adoption very shortly!

UPDATE 2 FROM AURELIA'S MOM, KIM:
Aurelia took Luke to our local county fair. He passed with flying colors!!! He had a fabulous time and made many new friends.

At one point in the day, Aurelia and Luke met a young girl with Down Syndrome. She loved dogs and promptly sat down. Luke gently crawled into her lap and snuggled! He really does love children and will be a perfect family pet soon!

Luke & Duke: Alums of 1st RLRR clinic

UPDATE ON RLRR DOGS FROM VOLUNTEER JODI:
Luke and Duke were from the very first spay/neuter clinic that was held at Karen’s 9 years ago – March 17 to 19, 2006. It was with Animal Ark’s Neuter commuter – at the time. It was so different than today’s spay/neuter clinics. It was held at the cat house on Karen’s property and the dogs/cats recovered on the floor of the cat house.

DUKE TODAY
Duke and Luke were fabulous black labs (of course). Karen received a call on these two dogs from I believe it was the game warden. Someone had been trying to kill Luke with a 2 x 4 but he wouldn’t die, so the warden was called and thankfully the warden called Karen.

LUKE
Luke was the gentler of the two and when he woke from his neuter surgery he awoke wagging his tail. Duke woke up growling. Second Chance took them through their program and I got to foster both of them.

DUKE IN YOUNGER DAYS
Duke stayed with me because he was a bit of a challenge and I accepted his challenge; Luke was adopted very quickly. Luke’s only residual medical issue from his beating was that his eye teared a bit but he wasn’t fearful of people whatsoever.

Gilbert (now Luke) goes home

Here is Gilbert with his new family. Please check out our first post about Gilbert HERE.

UPDATES FROM ACT V ON FACEBOOK:
Gilbert arrived tonight from Red Lake.
Emergency intake: bite wounds and broken bones post dog attack.
Stable for now.

Definitely feeling better!
Bandage changed - all looks good. We can thank his foster family for that!

So...
We have been struggling a bit with Gilbert.
He is doing fine; improving!
But tearing through cones, nibbling off bandages, breaking teeth on his external hardware and poor Vicki is exhausting herself in time, attention and resources trying to stay ahead of this smart boy. (As is his foster family!)
Then the discussion came to be, "what is his pain level?", can we make it better? Can we improve his outcome?
So... We are trying a new approach.

Better every day.

Pain management plan in place and seems to be working.
Gilbert is playing with his toys and walking (ok, maybe running around and seems happy.
The whole cone-on-the-head thing still isn't working for him but his foster family is staying on top of it.

Well, this adorable, sweet, good-go-along boy is nearing his adoption! It's going to be very difficult for his foster family to say good bye.
The home visit was done last night and a few loose ends will be tied up but things are looking very promising.

Gilbert's future looks bright and the family has raised two Rottie's in the past. He will also have land to romp around on! He's going to live on a horse ranch!!

To his foster family we scream, "Thank you!" (again, and again) for another job well done. We all know letting go is the hardest part but wow - they did an exceptional job at healing the emotional and physical injuries of this badly beaten-up puppy. Kudos to Stacie and Eric!

Last but never least: To those of you who sponsored Gilbert through our Sponsor-A-Pet program; you made his comfortable recovery possible.

We've been checking in with Gilbert's new family and all is well!
He has an appointment with the surgeon one day next week and we'll get to see even more of this this cutie!

Luke was to have surgery yesterday to dig out a dead piece of bone, but the surgeon decided to give him more time. He’s living the good life on a horse breeding ranch and loving it! Isn’t he handsome???

Post Clinic Clean-up

Jodi and Chuck made a trip up to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue August 24-27th after the clinic. It was very helpful to get Jodi's help in the cathouse and the storage shed. We seemed to be behind in everything which is typical after the clinics.

As usual Jodi made friends with all the cats, and when she left she took out a Black Pearl's litter of four black kittens and a litter of two kittens, Flame & Smoke, who went to foster care with Cause for Paws, an organization which she co-founded many years ago.

She also brought an old friend Duke and Abby for a visit.. Jodi adopted Duke from Red Lake when we first met. She also had news of Luke (Duke's counterpart 6 years ago). The woman who adopted Luke said that he is well, getting up in age, and the best dog they've ever had.

RLRR wants to thank Jodi and others who come up and help at the shelter.

Sincerely, Karen RLRR

Updates on Penny and her pups

Remember poor Penny and her pups when they were rescued?

MAMA PENNY UPDATE 1:
Penny is back at our home to be fostered :) Matt is so happy to have her back!
JuneBug isn't real keen on her going near her puppies--but Penny REALLY wants to take care of them! I think as time goes by JB will let her in :)

She did not do well at the foster home she was put in until she could be spayed. It was a very urban area with lots of traffic and activities. She seems to better in a rural situation. Here are some pictures I took today.

Matt just came in the house---we have JB in the house and Penny is outside in the kennel playing with the pups! She is so special!!!

Susie

MAMA PENNY UPDATE 2:
Penny has gone to her new home. Very nice couple with two children in college. Their last dog was shy and so they are ok with Penny's shyness--After highlighting all her good and bad points--I asked them to think about it for 24 hours and let me know---they called 3 hours later and said they really wanted her :)

Susie

UPDATES FROM ARVSS:
Hello Adopters!
R&M, who were the first family to adopt one of Penny's babies, have requested I share their email address with all the other families who have adopted from this litter. Many people do this and have kept in contact for many years. Some wonderful friendships have also developed from it. These families share pictures, and solutions to puppies raising problems--which is always nice!!! And it is a lot of fun to see your pet's brothers and sisters grow up!

Thank you all once again for adopting a rescued pet!!!
Susie

THALIA/KONATHALIA (NOW KONA)
Kona is doing really well. She's currently on a family vacation with us to northern Michigan and loved the car rides and new doggy friends she is making.

THALIA/KONAShe is adapting to things really well and really enjoying being a puppy :)
R&M~

THALIA/KONAZELDA REMAINS ZELDA
Zelda is doing great. We did not change her name since we thought it already was the perfect name. We have been meaning to send you pictures as she has already grown so much. She is now over 21 pounds, but she is still so skinny. She could end up the size of a horse the way she is growing.

ZELDAWe are in our fifth week of puppy training and she knows her name and has mastered sit, down, come, and we are getting pretty good with drop it though she really loves to put everything in her mouth. She loves all toys, especially the ones that squeak. I think she misses playing with Bea Arthur and the others.
ZELDAShe plays with a Husky in puppy class, but she is so big and rambunctious that the trainers don't let her play with the other dogs yet. She isn't aggressive like some of the other dogs, but her energy and strength are difficult to match. There are over 20 dogs about the same age or older than her, but she outweighs all of them by more than five pounds. I've attached two pictures from a couple of weeks ago, but we'll send more when we get the more recent ones uploaded.

ZOEZOE
We have had a good week getting to know Denali Houdini Hoover Crybaby Kliminski (aka Zoe). Attached is a picture of her laying in the hostas. It is a cool and shady spot to watch the girls when outside. She also can be found on the tile in front of one of the fireplaces when inside. Definitely a hot blooded girl!

Made our first trip to the vet Wednesday. She does great riding in the car and went to both of the girls' summer school classes. She was on her best behavior and charmed everyone!

We would be happy to stay in touch with the other puppy families to share triumphs and tragedies. Thanks for helping us make the connection and for giving our little girl a good start!

NATASHA (NOW ZOE -- So that makes two Zoe's in this litter! Susie)
Everything is going great. Zoe (new name) is doing really well in the crate, hasn't had one accident in there yet. Has had a couple accidents in the house but she's learning pretty quick. She is getting pretty good at quite a few commands. She can now do sit, stay, lay down, shake (BOTH hands), and she kind of understands roll over. Come is hard though, she is far too brave at this point and would much rather explore.

We went to the vet on Monday and she is now 24.4 lbs. Which is crazy compared to the 14 lbs she was when I took her in for a physical in June. We've also visited a few dog parks with her friend Gordy (my best friend's springer spaniel) and she loves it. There's one by Stoughton that has like 3 places for the dogs to go swimming too. It's great. Anyway, I'll keep you posted and try and get you a couple pictures. My computer died so it might be awhile. Hope summer is going great. :)

LUKEWe have adopted Luke. He was the very mellow and laid back boy of the litter. While he is fairly mellow, he's certainly having a wonderful time teasing and playing with our older dog Rozee (a 4 yr old German Shepherd mix) who was also adopted from ARVSS and is from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.
LUKEWe would be happy to keep in contact or get together with anyone else with puppies from the litter. I've attached a couple of recent pictures.

Thanks
C&G~

NICO
I'm sending you this picture of Nico taken tonight... He's rapidly becoming used to the kids and our house. We were a little uncertain as to how the kids might interact with a dog, since they both seemed a bit scared of dogs before Nico came along. Tonight Lance (pictured) requested that Nico's crate be placed in his room next to his bed!

NICONico seems to be adapting well and is sleeping through the night (O.K., 11:00 to 5:00... close enough!) Still a bit nippy, but I think he's catching on. We'll be doing obedience class when things settle down a bit here. Nico has enjoyed exploring our backyard, chasing ants, picking up sticks, etc.

Thanks again!

ANNABETH/CHLOEANNABETH (CHLOE)
J~ left for Seattle yesterday afternoon so Chloe and I are having a girls-only 4-day slumber party. What fun! :o) She's such a wonderful dog - so sweet and so smart! Things are going well and I just wanted to thank you for what you did for her and her mom/litter mates and the way you've been there for us with questions/validation. You're lovely! I'll let you know if I need anything

Much thanks -
N~
