Duchess: More Quills

When Duchess first arrived at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, she was very thin and had an infected foot. The infection was caused by porcupine quills in her foot that she had tried to chew off.

She went to Dr. Vicki of ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation who had to do two more surgeries to amputate more of the foot to clean up the infection.

Duchess went to Pet Haven in foster care to recover and remained there for a year and a half with foster caregivers who loved her very much.

She is in a forever home now with a mom and a grandma who have worked through all of her quirks and learned to live with a few.

UPDATE FROM NEW HOME:
Duchess's new name is Georgia and she has a favorite spot by Minnehaha Creek. She lays there and watches the water go by for a long time every day. She seems so peaceful there.

Her mom says, "Sometimes I wonder about her past on the reservation and what she took solace in. Maybe flowing water was one thing that was good in her life."

LOOKS TO ME LIKE SHE ALSO ENJOYS A SOFT BED AND A WARM FIRE :-)

Memorial Day Mini-Clinic

Dr. Vicki of Act V and vet student Lauren came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue May 26-27 and held a cat neuter clinic as well as helped community and shelter animals.  They provided vaccinations, worming, treatment for ticks, hotspots, allergies, and infections. They were able to neuter 8 cats and helped 6 other animals with major issues.
VICKI AND LAUREN
All the shelter animals were examined and medications were reviewed and prescribed. They also organized the RLRR medicine cabinet.

When they left on Monday they transported out a cat Muffet and her newborn litter of 6, and two other cats, Spike and Ty, all enroute to Feline Rescue.  Dr. Vicki also took little Dixie, a pregnant juvenile dog with a broken leg to her rescue, Act V, where she will get the care she needs.

After they left, then Nancy B. arrived with a load of supplies and food for the shelter.  Nancy helped with the chores Monday and Tuesday and left with Duchess, a dog with a severe foot injury going to Pet Haven with Dr. Vickie providing vet services.  Also riding with Nancy was little Blusey, enroute to Pet Haven.  Blusey was found at the Redby garbage dump with Ty the cat by our dear friend Avis.

NANCY
We are thankful at RLRR for these great volunteers who each do wonderful things to help out the Red Lake animals.  Without all the volunteers we could never provide the services we now are able to.

Red Lake Rosie's Adopted Dog Monday

Duchess is a terrier mix from Red Lake. She was adopted by a former adopter of another Red Lake Rosie's Rescue dog, Bart the Dumpster dog. He has his own blog and has featured his "bratty" new sister a couple of times. Here is a link to one of his posts about Duchess.

Here is what mom has to say:
"Duchess is doing well...she's a leaper. From a sitting position she leaped over our 5 foot fence to meet the neighbor's doberman yesterday. So that's some new information it was like a kangaroo, unbelievable.

You were right she really is the perfect dog...totally housebroken (except for one introductory poop) energetic but not nervous, loves all people, dogs and kids and not mouthy at all, takes treats nicely, etc. She's so ready made for a family that's looking for a dog to love and to be the center of attention." Can you find the Duchess girl in the photo? Looks like she blends right in.

Apple is a gorgeous aussie mix from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. She was with her fosters for only a couple of weeks when the family decided she was already home and adopted her.

Here is what her mom has to say:
"Allie (formerly Apple) is doing just great! She did just fine while we were on vacation - actually I hear she had so much fun playing with all the dogs at daycare, and Allie and Sadie each slept with a family member. Now Allie is sleeping with Amy in her bed - Sadie snores so Amy doesn't allow her in bed with her!

I took Allie to an off-leash dog park, and she just loved it. She never wandered too far from me, but when she did it wasn't for long. What a great dog! At home she is always by my side, and comes when we call her if she's outside. We are all enjoying her so much!"

TLC pups

We have already had a quick update from TLC on the litter of six:

Kids are doing good; they go in this afternoon for their shots. Boy can they sing when they want to. For the most part they do sleep thru the night until about 4:30 or 5:00 then they start to cry, but then either they go back to sleep or I do. LOL

Thank you and Dog Bless

Feline Rescue shelter forms alliance with RLRR

Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue has a new alliance with Feline Rescue in St. Paul. Several people volunteer for both organizations and wanted to find a way to work together.

The Feline Rescue foster system has already been taking in mama cats and kittens from Red Lake for a couple of years and now the shelter is involved, too. The shelter has generously offered to keep two spots open at the shelter for Red Lake cats. When those cats are placed, more Red Lake cats fill those places.

So far everyone has been very pleased with the results. The first six Red Lake cats to come to the Feline Rescue shelter have been very friendly and were placed in new homes almost immediately after completing their mandatory time in isolation.

Following is a post I wrote for the Feline Rescue blog about the foster mama cat and kittens from RLRR living at my house.

This group of kittens should be ready to go to their new homes at the end of April, but if you'd like to meet them now to adopt in advance that would be fine ;-)

DUCHESS ROUNDI was surprised to get a pregnant mama cat in January, but when Duchess arrived there was no doubt about her condition. She is a lovely calm black cat with a very sleek shiny coat. She is rather tall and slender, but had a round, hard belly that looked ready to pop. She is polydactyl and the extra toe on each front foot gives her a cute mitten paw. Duchess has a small angular head with almond-shaped green eyes and LOVES attention.

DUCHESS SLEEKI watched and waited for two long weeks until, finally, on Sunday, January 24, the day of the big Vikings playoff game, she started to have her kittens. I thought I might miss the game, but she finished up before the kick-off. In honor of that auspicious beginning, the five kittens were named for Vikings players.

ADRIAN IS THE ONLY BLACK KITTENAdrian is a female and looks just like her mom: small with shiny black fur and extra toes. She is adventurous and full of spunk, but she'll slow down to cuddle. I think she might be her mom's favorite, so it would be nice if they found a home together. She got her name because she had trouble finding and hanging on to mom's nipple when she was newborn...

BRETT IS A TOMBOYBrett is the other female. Born as #4, she started out as one of the smaller kittens, but she is big now. She has fluffy thick gray fur with lots of narrow stripes. She is smart and a leader. She always wants to wrestle with the boys.

SIDNEY BEARS A BULLSEYESidney is a gray fluffy male, but instead of stripes, he has circular swirls in his fur -- a real bullseye on each side. He is also very adventurous, but loving. The gray kittens mix and match all the time for play pals.

JEROD IS A MELLOW FELLOWJerod as a newborn kitten grabbed onto a nipple and wouldn't let go. Probably explains why he has been the biggest and mellowest kitten ever since. No extra toes for him, just stripes on his round belly.

RYAN'S GOT MITTEN FEETRyan does have the extra toes on his front feet; I'm not sure that would help for kicking. He is fluffy gray with stripes and loves to play or cuddle depending on his mood.

SMACK-DOWNReady for some fun? A little football in the off-season? Call 651-230-3263, if you are interested in learning more about this family.

Buttons has become a Duchess

NOTE FROM ADOPTER TO PETHAVEN:
We re-named her Duchess, because my boyfriend and I think she acts like royalty! I sent you five pictures, because my boyfriend said just to send them all. I love taking pictures of her, because she's so unbelieveably gorgeous!

DOWNY COMFORTDuchess is very particular about when she wants to snuggle and when she wants to play, but her big blue eyes will tell you right away which one she wants to do.

MOOSE TOYShe loves to sleep in my dresser drawers, so if I leave them open for too long she'll jump right in them. The picture with the moose is her sleeping in one of the drawers that we have out because it's broken, but we put her blanket you gave us in there so she sleeps there all the time.

UNDER THE COVERSShe and our other cat, Elvis, play as much of the day as they can. When it's time for them to sleep, he usually follows her until she lays down, and then lays as close to her as she'll allow. When it's Mike and my bed time she jumps in bed with me, and snuggles next to Elvis on my legs.

UP HIGH AND STRETCHING OUTShe plays through the bottom of the chairs under the table, which I can't help but laugh at, and she feels the need to be as high up as she can possibly be. If she's in play mode we have to make sure the bathroom door is closed, or we'll hear her screaming with joy as toilet paper is torn all across as many floors as she can get it.

BLINK!My favorite thing she does, though, is clean up after Elvis. He makes a mess of the food, so if it's all over the floor, she'll dig it back next to the food dish as best as she can.

Thank you so much for giving me such a wonderful little lady! I'm sorry I wrote so much, but I just love to talk about her!
