Cat treets!

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue had an overnight visitor, Nancy B. She arrived Tuesday and took care of all the cats and then left the next morning, September 14th, with a transport of 12 dogs and puppies going to various rescues. She also transported Orson, a little dog from the Bemidji Pound.

NANCY & VASHTINancy brought gifts from herself and other RLRR friends. One of the great treats for the cats was a tall beautiful cat tree donated to Chuck & Don's for us. Jane Norling picked it up with donated food. The cats were very happy to have the gift and many enjoyed climbing and enjoying the sights from the top of the tower!

NEW CAT TREE!Nancy has a special gift with the cats and kittens. The cathouse was bustling with activity and fun. Not only did she catch us up on laundry, she had lots of time to show love to the kitties too.

TRANSPORTEarly the next morning Nancy was busy with cats again and then helped load up the transport with outgoing dogs and puppies.

KIDS IN THE WOODSHeaded for Animal Ark was a group of 5 puppies from the woods that I found the day Nancy arrived. Animal Ark had taken another 5 of the litter last Saturday. The mama dog had 11 puppies, and started moving them out to a den in the woods. I was able to get five on my first visit and when I returned there were only 5 left, so we are not sure what happened to the 11th pup. Anyway, the ten are safely reunited with their littermates in the care of Linda who fosters for the Ark. The mama dog was fixed at the clinic last weekend!

DANCERAlso on transport was Dancer, a small breed dog that was surrendered with another blind Poodle we call Diamond. Dancer was accepted by All Dog Rescue and will be in foster care. He came in very frightened and cowering, but improved so much over the past 2 weeks.

TUTUAll Dog also took Tulip aka TuTu. Tutu is a little shep mix that came in a month ago with her brother Tutter. They were badly starved and had many parasites. It took a long time to get them to put on nice body weight and get over diarrhea.

TUTTER & TUTUTutter is still looking for his special placement. Both are wonderful dogs now that they are no longer starving.

We sent 2 juveniles and a litter of 3 puppies to our friends at Tricounty.

SARGESarge was a surrender at Ponemah during the clinic,

JILLIANJillian was abandoned by her owner who moved out and left her behind, and the little litter of 3 was found by Tony and brought to the shelter.

DEMI, HARLEY, HANNAHWe named them Harley, Demi and Hannah.

Thank you to Nancy, Animal Ark, All Dog, and Tricounty for taking all
these great animals. Thank you, Jane, for your help getting us the great cat tree.

Also, to all the great foster moms and dads who help each and everyone on to a new life!

Sincerely, Karen RLRR

Sarge is now a beloved Bo

NOTE FROM SARGE/BO'S FAMILY TO ANIMAL ARK:
We are The B. Family. On Aug. 21, 2009 we adopted "Sarge", a Shepherd mix from your facility. We renamed him "Bo" and we are writing to give you an update.

Bo is the BEST dog ever. He is such a wonderful addition to our family, we are so grateful to have him. He is very attached to my daughter J.

He loves toys, especially ones that squeak (the louder the better) and is learning to like treats. He is very intelligent and learns quickly. Bo is a very big love-sponge and wants to be held and hugged frequently. Did you know he's a lap dog? Well, he is, all 80lbs of him. We have to sit on the floor with him to accomplish this, but he loves it.

A few weeks back we had a Wisdom Panel done on him- a doggy DNA test to identify his breed. He turned out to be an Akita, Bull-mastiff and Chow-Chow mix. It doesn't make any difference to us what he "is", but it was interesting to find out.

Thank you for taking such good care of Bo until we adopted him.

The B's, C, K and J

Sarge

Here's good news on Sarge--the brindle pit bull /mastiff male rescued by Carol Priest. He spent many months at the shelter and Animal Ark gave him a chance in May after the clinic. Now he has been adopted.

Karen

HAPPY SARGE NOWFROM CAROL PRIEST:
This is wonderful news! If you could give me a little detail about the situation Sarge will be living in, I'd really appreciate it. I helped feed Sarge when he was homeless, and brought him to Red Lake Rosie's when he began to seem ill. I was unable to take him home because of my other dogs, but he really brightened my days at work. I am now on the Board of Red Lake Rosie's, and have helped out with Animal Ark clinics up here. Thank you so much for sheltering him, and for finding him a forever home!

Carol

CAROL AND SARGE BEFOREFROM ANIMAL ARK:
Sarge went into a home with a couple, two cats and two adult kids. He'll sleep in a bedroom with his people or wherever he is comfortable. He will be left alone each day for just 2-6 hours depending on the day of the week. They own their house and are really nice folks. His heartworm treatment is completed and now he will be in his own home - I hope forever.

Thanks for caring about the big guy - I love that dog!! He's got real personality!

RLRR dogs at Animal Ark

Hi Karen: Erin, Erica and Elizabeth are now on Ark's website - not sure who you called what but Elizabeth is definitely chow mix - curled tail, lots of black on her tongue. I think Erin is the most shepherd looking - she is also the biggest. They also had their second shots today, bordatella and heartgaard - all doing well, really sweet gals.

Nancy says that her three lil' black shep guys have been getting lots of attention and may possibly be adopted out by this weekend!! Just goes to show that black is not the "dreaded" color -

Tell Mike Sarge is doing well - still at Ark receiving treatment - just a big lover boy - gave him another brushing today - gosh, one would think I was shearing a sheep by the amount of hair he gets brushed out of him - he does love it!!

Hope all is going well for you - actually, I love this cool weather though I would like the sun!! Great dog walking weather -
L

Don't forget Angelica!

Update on Sarge

Turns out, Sarge was taken in by Animal Ark and we got a quick response to Mike's inquiry yesterday. I LOVE to know that people are reading the blog!

Hi Karen: On the RLR blog Mike was looking for information on Sarge. Please let him know we all are in love with him!

Unfortunately, he did test positive for heartworm so we can't take him for any long walks. He is doing well otherwise and adjusted very well. Ark has not put a picture up yet - seems like we are getting more returns than adoptions these days - sure hope that trend turns around soon!

Judy (another Red Lake dog) got put on hold for adoption last Saturday. She was supposed to get spayed tomorrow but unfortunately she has developed a little digestive problem (no, she just tested neg. for parvo!!) so we are going to wait until she is eating and pooping solids again. Going to go feed her a hamburger mixture right now.

Jamie will go in tomorrow for her spay - hopefully we can find a home for her sooner than later - she is such a little instigator and a talker - love her though!

Take care - Linda

Mike sends thanks and seeks news of Sarge

Hey all. Mike here, most of you know me but those who don't I'm the one who helps out with the chores and whatever other tasks Karen needs done at the shelter.

MIKE WITH SARGE IN FOREGROUNDI just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all who helped on the last 2 clinics. I'm sorry I did not make it in for them but I had to hold down the fort at the shelter while Karen was gone. The help and supplies and the medical care are so much appreciated. All the clinics that have been done since RRLR has been around have made a big difference for the reservation.

I used to go to the ALC program Karen taught in Red Lake for awhile a few years ago. Back then, I swear that just about everywhere you looked a small pack of stray dogs would be running around, but now, in just 3 years, that number of dogs I see when I go through the reservation is way down.

Thank you everyone who has helped out.

SARGEAlso, I wanted to ask for anyone who has any information on Sarge (the large brindle colored mix dog) who was transported on May 31st to please update us. I was really attatched to him but knew deep down I could not provide a good enough home for him. I miss the boy and any information on him would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot and I hope everyone is doing well!

Penny Drive presentation at Red Lake Elementary School

Red Lake community involvement with Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is critical to our outreach and education efforts regarding responsible care of companion animals. This event is a giant step in the right direction!
Red Lake Elementary School Teacher Michelle Stapleton wrote:

"Red Lake Elementary School students and staff celebrated Kindness Week February 9 - 13. One of the activities they did to celebrate was to hold a penny drive. The students chose their favorite organization to donate the funds raised to and Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Shelter was the lucky recipient. The students in grades K - 5 raised an astounding $652! Wow! That's a lot of pennies!

We were all finally able to get together to make the official presentation of the check. The kids were all very excited to see the furry friends Karen and Company brought with to visit. Karen has said those funds will go toward the next clinic RLRR will be holding in April. Everyone at RLES is just glad to be able to help out such a great organization."

She also offered to include info about the clinics in the next RLES newsletter that goes home with all the students at RLES and the Kindergarten center. She noted that, "There's a good chance it gets read by their parents, as well."

RED LAKE ROSIE'S RESCUE THANKS MS. STAPLETON AND THE RED LAKE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS FOR THEIR GENEROUS DONATION!!!Karen reports:

I wanted to let you know that Red Lake Elementary School students presented Red Lake Rosie's Rescue with a check for the amount of $652.00.

Jolene Tallchief, chairperson of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, myself, Mike, and Sarah took our little furry friends Sarge(pit bull/chow/mastiff mix), Sista (husky pup), and Sweet Pea (cat) to the school. The animals were received very well by the administration, teachers, and students alike.
Students had many questions for Mike and Sarah about the animals and the animals were very well behaved. Our Chairperson thanked the students and told them their generous donation would help fund a series of neuter/spay clinics that will be held in April and May.The teacher that organized the event, Michelle Stapleton is interested in bringing a group of students to see how our neuter/spay clinic operates. The Principal Jean Whitefeather also stated that next year she would like us to bring in animals to the classrooms and also talk with the children about animal care and other issues. In spite of bad weather we are happy we went and we all had a great day!!

Sincerely, Karen

Featured Volunteer: Carol Priest

Dear Denise:

Carol Priest has been one of RLRR friends for the past 4 years.

Carol works in the Red Lake community and has started a number of social programs including the homeless shelter. Not only does this lady love and care about the homeless people, she also has a special heart for homeless dogs. She has sent many to the shelter, volunteers for rescue during clincs, feeds animals at the Group Home and has been a great help. She has a special gift of being able to win the trust of dogs who are more difficult to catch.

Pictured here is Carol with her recent rescue of "Sarge" a homeless dog she has been advocating to get out of the community and to the shelter. She brought Sarge during the Akin visit and had him neutered, immunized, and a wound under his leg repaired.

Sarge is a very nice dog, and we are hoping to find just the right placement for him.

We are so very lucky to have Carol as a partner. Thank you, Carol, for all you do.
