Winter supplies needed

With winter just around the corner, weatherizing the dog kennels is at the top of the "to do" list at the RLRR shelter.

Red Lake dogs and puppies live in outdoor kennels during the brutal cold winters of northern Minnesota, so volunteers must tarp or put plastic on the kennels to keep out the snow and ice. The supplies needed to accomplish this include sixty 5x7-foot tarps and many 8-inch and 12-inch white/clear cable ties. We can also use RUBBER pails for water in the winter that won't freeze and break; we use these at the shelter and donate them to residents with dogs living outdoors.

The tarps are at the top of our Red Lake Rosie's wishlist on Amazon.com. Also, consider adding Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as the charitable beneficiary of your https://smile.amazon.com account purchases.
Please share our wishlist with others: http://amzn.com/w/3TKM4Q9EEQ7CB

Thank you for any help you can give to help support the Red Lake dogs and puppies this winter.

Second group of helpers for winter prep

The same day Linda and Geri left, Darcy and her brother Wade arrived at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to complete the weatherization job. Darcy and Tom came to the rescue last fall and also helped with the tarping.
We had a good time finishing the roofed kennels and touching up the doors. Again, it was cold and windy, but they got the job done.
Darcy and Wade helped with the chores for 2 days. Wade also saved a kitten during the night that got his foot caught in a wire kennel. Had Wade not been there, we may have lost a kitten!
The weatherization of the outdoor kennels is completed thanks to a group of hardworking volunteers who traveled many miles to help out.
Thank you Darcy and Wade for the needed help!

Ready for winter at RLRR

Our weatherization of the kennels at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is complete. I had two groups of helpers.
Linda, for the third year, came up and did a wonderful job installing heavy duty plastic on 18 kennels at the shelter. Her technique provides some solar energy and allows the dogs to see light instead of the darkness of tarped kennels. This was Linda's idea three years ago and she continues to work hard to make sure it is done properly. Karen and Geri tarped the doors of each kennel as it is more sturdy for the doors.
Linda arrived on October 23rd and stayed until October 26th working in the rain, sometimes snow, wind and cold to accomplish the job! She brought the supplies and tools she needed as well as donated plastic from Darryl Stromberg for 3 years. Darryl and his wife Mary adopted a RLRR dog last year.
As usual Linda got her kitty and puppy fix. On her way out Linda transported Claudius, a labbie puppy that arrived while Linda was here to foster care.
Thank you, Linda, Geri and Daryl for your help in making sure the dogs and puppies will be warm this winter!

Time to prepare RLRR for winter

Brr, We hate to think of winter, but it is sure to come! We want Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to be ready for it.

At RLRR shelter, the dogs and puppies must thrive in outdoor kennels. We do all we can to help make it more comfortable with fresh, dry oat straw and tarped and plastic-wrapped kennels to keep out the wind and snow.

We get subzero temps plus wind chills in the winter.

Last year we had Linda, Darcy, Jeanette, and Collen who helped weatherize the kennels. Linda has come up with a plastic sheeting solution for some and we also use tarps 8 x 10 foot and 10 x 12 foot.

The process also required cable ties mainly the 12 inch length.

Thanks to Susan of ABE! Fund we have our 2012-13 supply of straw. She has supplied the straw for 3 years in a row now.

Our needs for winter are the tarps, zip ties, heavy plastic sheeting-2 rolls, and wooden lathe.

One other supply would be heavy duty black rubber pails that will not shatter when they freeze. These are used to water the dogs.

Last but not least, we need the volunteers willing to come up to the shelter to help us get ready for winter.

Thanks,
Karen and the animals of RLRR

Preparations for winter at RLRR

With winter approaching there is lots of activity at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

Linda Hultquist visited on October 23-26 and winterized 18 kennels with a plastic sheeting. Linda singlehandedly worked on the kennels and did a remarkable job. The plasic is better than tarping because they make use of the solar heating as well as allow the dogs to see outside. We will still use some tarping, but this new plastic technique, which was Linda's idea, seems to work very well.

While Linda visited, she took special care of Delores, a very small stray puppy that came in at the clinic. This little puppy had mange and was malnourished and moved into the cathouse bedroom with Linda.

Delores was bathed and pampered all the while Linda was at the shelter.

Of course Linda made every effort to get Delores a foster home, and the good news is that when Linda left Wednesday she had little Delores riding shotgun enroute to Dr. Vickie at Act V!!

Thank you Linda for all your hard work.

Sincerely, All the dogs at RLRR
