Red Lake Elementary School helps Red Lake Rosie's Rescue

On March 2, 2016, Karen, Kevin, and Mouser visited the Red Lake Elementary School to receive a check for $328.00 collected by the Honor Society penny drive and Michelle Stapleton, Kelly Hunt, Susan Olson and Stella Fern, teachers at Red Lake Elementary School.

After that visit, arrangements were made to visit the classrooms on March 23rd and 24th to teach the students about Red Lake Rosie’s mission, animal care, and including animals interacting with students.

The students learned about therapy dogs and a special therapy dog named Gaag (Porcupine) who came from the reservation 7 years ago and volunteered as part of his new life as a therapy dog.

Jenny and Zoey Wolfe brought Samuel a Chinese Crested small breed with no hair except that on its head and feet. Gracie is an elderly pit bull that was rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Frosty is an older Samoyed with long white hair. Mouser, the chow shepherd from Ponemah, joined the group. Stories were told the students about each breed and their unique characteristics.

Jenny read the classes the story of “Buddy Unchained” where the topic of the lonely life of chained animals was discussed. The children were given instruction on animal care and encouraged to include the animals as a part of the family.

Also, making his appearance was Duggy the Dalamation who talked with kids and also played them a song called “Lucky Dog”.

At the end of each session, students had a chance to interact with the animals, read a book, put together a puzzle, play a cat button game, or do some art work.

The program was excellent and a special thank you to the students and teachers who participated, also to Jenny and Zoey of Roseau who came to Red Lake to share their animals and valuable information they had in their work in Roseau with cats and dogs.

Kindness Week!

Red Lake Elementary School children, parents and staff have an annual Kindness Week and Red Lake Rosie's Rescue just received this notice:

Red Lake Rosie’s was the chosen recipient of our fundraising for this year’s Kindness Week celebration at RLES/ECC. We raised a total of $706.83! And this year Sanford Health has again had a Celebrate Kindness Challenge in which they match a portion of the dollars we raise, which will add another $346 donated to RLRR. That will together total $1052.83!
Sincerely, Michelle Stapleton

What a very timely reminder that lots of people at Red Lake care about and practice kindness to animals!

THANK YOU from

Red Lake Elementary students visit RLRR

On Tuesday, June 24th, about 35 fifth-grade students from Red Lake Elementary came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for a visit.

They interacted with the animals and helped with clearing the shelter yard and organizing all the canned dog and cat food.

PRUNEY THE DOG AND FRIEND
This group of students were so great and had a good time.

The students took a great interest in Jacob, the badly abused dog, who enjoyed their company. It was remarkable to see how forgiving Jacob was with all the kids.

This was a very positive experience and we hope to continue this in the fall when school starts. Thank you to all the staff and kids for coming.

PRUNEY AND ANOTHER FRIEND
A special thank you to Michelle Stapleton and her children, Carter, Owen and Olivia, for organizing and helping with the program.

RLRR visits Red Lake Elementary School

On Monday, June 23rd, representatives of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue went to the Red Lake Elementary school and brought animals and information. The students were very receptive to our message of proper care and kindness to animals.

The lonely life of a chained animal and the need for watering were stressed throughout the message. Students promised to water their animals this summer as many are dehydrated. Students also said they will carry the message to stop chaining and include their pet as a “part of the family”. Many students had questions and comments about their animals.

Discussions were held on cruelty being unacceptable and what to do if they see it happening. Our culture is based on respect of all living things. Through education we are addressing the issue of cruelty. We want to help youth build a positive and loving relationship with their companion animals.

Those visiting included Karen, Kevin as Duggy the Dalmatian, mouser and a litter of 3 kittens.

Kindness Week at Red Lake Elementary School

Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue was invited to the Red Lake Elementary School on Wednesday, March 5th to accept the generous donation of the children’s 2014 penny drive as a part of their Kindness Week activities. Teacher Michelle Stapleton coordinates this event each year and the students have picked the animal shelter as their favorite charity.
Karen, Bubba the Bulldog and Mouser went to the student assembly and accepted the proceeds of 60,000 pennies collected. Sanford Health also matched $250.00 of the donation, so Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue received a total of $850.00.
The antidote for cruelty is kindness, and the elementary children and staff provided exactly that. We are so thankful to be reminded of all the kind people that care about their animals here at Red Lake.

Red Lake Rosie’s promised to come into the classrooms again with animals and a kind message as soon as the weather warms up and we have a schedule arranged. We enjoy our visits to the Red Lake Elementary where they always make us feel valued and wanted.
A big thank you to the Red Lake Elementary School from Red Lake Rosie’s Board of Directors Jo, Polly, Carol, Karen, and our furry friends Bubba and Mouser.
Both Mouser and Bubba were big hits with the kids.

National Pet Week at Red Lake Elementary School

MISS KITTY
Miss Kitty, the cat, and Bubba, the Bulldog, held sessions on May 15th and 16th during ”National Pet Week” teaching students in grades 1 – 5 at Red Lake Elementary School about Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue and our activities.
BUBBA, MOUSER AND KIDS
Kevin as Bubba the Bulldog was a big hit with the students.  Bubba explained the life of a rescue dog at the Red Lake Rosie’s shelter and had a stern message about dogfighting, as he said that earlier in life he was forced to fight with other dogs, and it was no fun. Bubba told the kids to report animal fighting and any cruelty to the police department.

Bubba also recounted his early life on a chain which was very lonely. Bubba bragged that he was a smart one who got neutered and urged students to get their pet friends in to the next clinic June 10-12 in Redby to also get them neutered or spayed.

Karen as "Miss Kitty" talked with the kids about the cats of Red Lake and the perils of not being indoors and protected from dogs such as Bubba.

JOHN LITTLE AND HIS DOGS
Also visiting was John Little, an elder form the Redby community with his 2 small breed dogs, Dottie and Sucra.  His dogs were happy, healthy and well groomed.  We asked students how they could have dogs as healthy as John’s dogs and they gave many great ideas including proper diet, watering, sheltering, vet care, grooming, and most of all love.

Red Lake Rosie's furry visitors included Lily and Lilah, the shepherd pups, and Mouser.  The kids loved them all.

Special emphasis was put on chaining and the lonely life of a chained dog.  It was a very rewarding and learning experience for all.  We have an open invitation to come to visit the school with animals and our message.
These students raised nearly $1,000 for us earlier during Kindness Week, and we explained that we used the funds to help with clinic expenses. We want to thank Michelle Stapleton, teacher, for organizing the fundraisers and also the school visits.
