RLRR Metro Support Group

Below are the notes from the meeting of the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Metro Support Group held on February 7.

Thanks to all of you who attended and to all of our Rosie's volunteers and rescues who give so generously of their time and money to help the animals.

We are starting to see a reduction in the numbers of reservation animals that need rescue - 2009 > 859 animals; 2010 > 771 animals; 2011 > 609 animals - thanks to all of the support, in funds, supplies, and volunteer hours, for the community spay/neuter clinics.

While there is still much to do, this is significant progress towards alleviating the overpopulation and suffering of the animals.

Thank you,
Karen & DeeDee

Red Lake Rosie’s

731 Total spay/neuter

Rosie’s small foster/adoption network adopted out 17 cats and 15 dogs.

KAREN ENJOYING A CLINIC2012 MN SNAP Clinics
April 12-14; June 21-23; August 20-22; October 10-13 (Dates are on the website)

Karen and DeeDee are working on a clinic protocol that will apply to all RLRR clinics. Please let DeeDee know if you have any suggestions that would improve clinic functioning.

Akin Hills Pet Hospital is holding a two-day neuter only/vaccination clinic
March 2-3.

Volunteer Needs
2012 Clinics – Volunteers to work at the MN SNAP community spay/neuter clinics. We need roughly five people each day at the warehouse and, optimally, one or two people to be at the shelter to help with chores and with surrenders from the clinics. Contact DeeDee (dewelles@comcast.net )

Tabling Committee Chair – Someone to facilitate RLRR participation in tabling/PR events and organize/schedule volunteers for staffing. There are many Twin Cities outreach events in which Rosie’s could participate, but we need someone to make it happen. This would be a fairly simple job of choosing and coordinating events, since we have volunteers to help set-up and staff the events.
Contact DeeDee (dewelles@comcast.net )

Fundraising/Community Events – Volunteers to help organize, initiate, and staff events. We have lots of ideas for fun events for Rosie’s supporters, and individuals and families who have adopted RLRR animals; and for fundraising, but we need more people in order to bring the ideas to fruition. We are also open to anyone bringing new ideas and suggestions. Contact Colleen (carecmeyer@gmail.com) or Crystal (crystalberntson@gmail.com)

No Kill Walk
Ellen Weinstock talked about the No Kill walk scheduled for the first weekend in May at the fairgrounds.

All agreed that it would be great for Rosie’s to participate. Kristen offered to make bandanas for the dogs to wear at the event, but we need a volunteer to take the lead on coordinating the event for Rosie’s. Contact DeeDee (dewelles@comcast.net )

SUPPLIESSupplies Needed
Flea/Tick/Ear Mite preventative, such as Frontline for dogs and Revolution for cats, especially needed at the April and June clinics and for the shelter animals.

Brooms, dust pans, laundry detergent, bleach, paper towels, medium &large garbage bags (as thick as possible), five-quart stainless steel buckets, pooper scoopers, slip leads. We can always use plastic crates of any size.

Supplies Not Needed
Please go through any donations and remove ferret food, bird food, cat collars, cat& dog harnesses, and other items that can’t be used at RLRR and donate them elsewhere.

There are many small and medium dog jackets and sweaters, so the only size that could be used is large, although the big dogs tend to rip them off.

Food and edible treats for the cats and dogs shouldn’t be more than six months out-of-date. Please do not send up dehydrated dog and cat food such as Prowl, Verve, Embark, and SoJo’s.

Karen has plenty of towels, sheets, bedspreads, quilts, pet shampoos, and liquid flea/tick applications. Please do not send up any expired, off-brand, low quality, medically dangerous (ie: Hartz, Bio-Spot) chemical products to treat parasites, etc.

We have more than enough wire crates, as well, especially the small ones. The only size we could use is extra-large.

RLRR Metro Support committee mtg notes

Notes from Red Lake Rosie’s Meeting 6/16/10

In Attendance: Colleen Meyer, Denise Luke, Sharae Nevitt, Dani Schwartzman, Heidi Hunstad, Jane Norling, Crystal Berntson, Kristen Klemann, Kristen Goral, Ellen Weinstock, DeeDee Welles

DeeDee passed on Nancy O’Sullivan’s message of gratitude to the metro committee for their ongoing support for Karen and RLRR.

Clinics Update
MN SNAP:
89 animals S/N/Vax; 20 vaccination only; one quill removal; 5 dogs groomed.
Animal Ark/Akin: 120 animals S/N/Vax; 50 vaccination only; 20 dogs groomed.

For the first time, there were less community animals lined up waiting for spots at the clinics, and the daily quota was filled by stray animals and shelter animals. Whether or not this is a positive trend, or a result of three clinics scheduled fairly close together, remains to be seen.

Karen and Colleen are discussing initiating a shuttle to bring animals from Ponemah, an under-served area of the reservation, to the next clinic. Dani offered to look into getting some kind of larger vehicle to use as a shuttle along with the RLRR van.
Colleen will be the transport coordinator for the Animal Ark/Akin clinics. She will facilitate the transportation of the animals left at the clinics to the rescues in the Cities.

Next clinics: August 20-21; October 15-16.

Shelter
There are quite a few young adult animals at the shelter, some with various issues such as heartworm and orthopedic problems. Lately, Karen has been taking in a lot of feral puppies and dogs, as well.

Volunteer Needs
DeeDee needs help in order to reduce her RLRR responsibilities, which have become quite time-consuming as Rosie’s has grown. We need to actively recruit new volunteers.

Needs:
Placements of animals in rescues –
This involves working with Karen and sending pics and info to the RLRR rescue partners about animals at the shelter.

Transport Coordination –
Along with Karen, arrange transports to pick up animals at the shelter, Bemidji, or Motley. Arrange transfer stops in the Cities and facilitate rescue transfers. Meet transports in the Cities and transport animals to various rescues and/or arrange for short transports.

Dani offered to help with transport coordination, but we could use another person, as well.

Denise wondered if we needed to re-visit the idea of having a van in the Cities that could be used for transport, since many people own smaller cars, and our transport loads are generally large.

Food, Crates, and Pad Transport –

Dog and cat food need to be picked up regularly at various Chuck and Don’s and at other places, as it is donated. It needs to be stored and then delivered to the transport going to the shelter.

Crates need to be gathered, cleaned, and sent back to the shelter on transports.

Monthly, medical pads need to be picked up in St Paul and sent up to the shelter and clinics.

There are also various other items that are donated (ie: Igloos, shelter supplies) that need to be picked up and delivered to the transport.

Fundraising
We need volunteers to work on fundraising activities such as the holiday flyer that is sent out annually, along with other possibilities. Metro committee members have lots of great ideas for fundraisers and community events, but we have not had the volunteers to initiate them.

We would like to have an annual picnic for volunteers, supporters, and adoptive families with their RLRR dogs.

Denise suggested some kind of photo exhibit/sale evening with wine, cheese, etc. We have had three professional photographers visit RLRR over the years, and there are lots of beautiful photos of the animals and people of Red Lake reservation.

There are many opportunities to have a RLRR table at various events in the Cities. There are also online fundraising opportunities.

Crowdrise, actor Ed Norton’s new online charitable initiative, was briefly discussed.

Ellen offered to start a RLRR Facebook fan page, as it seems it would be a more active page than the group page we have now.

Also, we all agreed that having the blog accessible and linked in as many ways as possible would be a very good thing.

Anyone interested in facilitating additional online networking for RLRR would be much appreciated.

A volunteer to take over writing thank you notes is needed, too.

Foster/Adoption Group
DeeDee and Teresa have downsized the RLRR foster/adoption network in the last few months, due to the heavy workload involved in running it. For now, we have about five foster homes and are not taking on any new ones. If and when there are volunteers willing to do the work, the network could grow again.

Community Education
Karen suggested giving out stuffed dogs and cats to children on the reservation, because there is a tendency for families to want to have/keep puppies as entertainment/toys for the kids. This could provide an opportunity to discuss the care and treatment of living beings versus viewing them as toys. It could be done at clinics and/or in schools, or other venues. We need someone to take the lead on finding cheap/donations of stuffed animals.

Shelter Help
Karen is having oral surgery in mid-July and will need help at the shelter for about 4 days. When the surgery date is firm, we will send out an email asking for volunteers who can go to the shelter and care for the animals.

Minutes from RLRR Support Team meeting 1/28/10

In attendance: Jenny Fitzer, Jon Theis, Colleen Meyer, Denise Luke, Sarah Ernhart, Kristin Ripley, Claudia Wielgorecki, Cindy Martin Caverzagie, Laura Leonard, Jeanette Larson, Crystal Berntson, Rory McKay, Mike Dosal, Lauren Cox

2009 Achievements -- RLRR rescued 849 animals and had a record number of transports. During some months in the Fall and Winter, there were weekly transports due to the overwhelming number of animals coming in to the shelter.

RLRR Foster/Adoption Network – Fostered and adopted out 121 animals. There was enough money after all of the expenses were paid to send Karen money to use for the rescue.

Funding – RLRR has received the Lawson Family Foundation grant for 2010 for clinics, spay/neuter, and medical expenses.

Sarah Ernhart of Sarah Beth Photography has designated Rosie’s “Rescue of the Month” for March. She is offering 50% off of pet portraits to our adoptive families for the month. Her link is on our website Adoptions page.

Denise suggested that we add a space on the adoption contract for “an additional donation.”

Needs - Lauren & Mike reported on their last visit to RLRR. They suggested that more shelving be sent up, so that some of the towels, pads, etc. could be more accessible rather than in bins. Mike also suggested moving the excess/standby stuff out of the cat house and onto shelves in the new storage unit. This would free up space in the cat house. Karen probably has ideas about what she wants stored where, too. Right now, the main need is leashes. There are lots of collars, but no leashes, and they are needed to walk dogs at the shelter and at clinics.

Barbara Bowman is exploring acquiring some good cat cages to replace the dog cages that sit on the floor. They would be easier to clean, provide more room for the cats, and free up space in the cat house.

Pet Expo - Lynn Mecum is organizing the RLRR table at the Pet Expo on March 6 & 7.

Spay/Neuter Clinics - Four Animal Ark / Akin clinics are scheduled for March 11-13; June 3-5; Aug 20-21; Oct 15-16

Jenny Fitzer offered to be the Clinics Chair. She has worked at numerous clinics in the last two years and has many ideas to improve efficiency and organization.

Jenny and Colleen mentioned the need for outdoor lighting at the warehouse and Mike offered a tall lamp.

Lauren Cox offered to update our clinic database.

MN SNAP - Dr. Kim Culbertson (AHS MSU) is starting her own mobile Spay/Neuter Assistance program (MN SNAP) and would possibly be able to come to the reservation once or twice this year, if we can find the funding. It would cost about $5000 per clinic. If we could manage six clinics in 2010, it would put us closer to turning the tide of overpopulation on the reservation.

PR/Funding Opportunities – There was discussion about all of the opportunities to raise awareness about RLRR, as well as the availability of funding. If people want to take the initiative to write a grant, send info/dvd to a show like the Ellen show, or have ideas about fundraising, they would be welcome to do so. DeeDee has all of the RLRR information that is needed for grant-writing.

Transports – There is a transport this weekend with 16 animals scheduled to come to the Cities.
Denise is planning a trip(s) to Bemidji around February 10-15
Colleen may go up the following weekend, February 20-21.

Metro Support Team meeting notes

RLRR September 23, 2009 Meeting Notes
Colleen Meyer, Crystal Berntson, Barbara Bowman, Claudia Wielgorecki, Laura Leonard, Lauren Cox, Kristin Goral, Denise Luke, DeeDee Welles

I. Transports
We have transported and placed 241 animals from July-September. There will be a transport this weekend with approximately eight animals, which brings the total through September to 249.
There are about 53 animals at the shelter, now.
Denise is planning to go up 10/14 and will transport back to the Cities on 10/15 or so.
II. RLRR Foster/Adoption
Since the RLRR foster/adoption network began in March, we have adopted 82 animals into new homes. There are currently 15 dogs, puppies, and kittens in our foster homes.
DeeDee and Teresa are working on finalizing Adoption Policies and a Foster Handbook for the RLRR network.
III. 2009 Spay/Neuter Clinics
We have had three S/N clinics at the warehouse in Redby. The Animal Humane Society did a clinic in April, and Animal Ark and Akin Hills Pet Hospital teamed up for clinics in May and August.
The cost for each clinic averages about $5000. The three together cost a little over $15,000 and a total of 381 animals were altered.
Animal Ark and Akin have offered to do another clinic in October, but there are no funds left to pay for a clinic this year.
We have re-applied for the DJ&T Foundation grant, which will, hopefully, be renewed and will pay for the community-owned animals at the S/N clinics in 2010.
IV. Straw Donations
Supporters have generously contributed to the straw drive, and Karen has arranged to have the straw in time to fill the doghouses for the coming winter months.
V. Volunteer Needs
Volunteers are needed to help with adoption applications. Both Kristin and Crystal offered to help.
We have a Meet & Greet scheduled for 10/ 24 at Chuck & Don’s, Wayzata, and an open house at Rivertown Animal Hospital in Stillwater on Oct 3rd.
Volunteers will be needed at future Meet & Greets to pick up animals and take them to these events.
We discussed the need for a public relations packet, and for volunteers to give presentations on RLRR and do tabling at various events around the Cities. Lauren volunteered to make a RLRR powerpoint presentation. We need to gather the info, photos, videos, articles, and other stuff that’s out there about RLRR and have it compiled and in an accessible format.
VI. Tri-Fold Brochure
We need to print our updated brochure, but it’s costly to print, especially with our color logo. Kristin has a relative in the printing business and offered to check with him on pricing.
Liz is getting a bid in Elk River, and Colleen may know of some resources, too.
Thanks to Barbara for designing the brochure and updating it.
VII. Puppy Sweaters
Laura brought some cute knitted puppy sweaters and asked for feedback on sizes.
She is fundraising/facilitating the knitting/sewing of sweaters/jackets for the RLRR animals. The puppies and dogs with mange can lose a lot of their hair and get very chilly.
VIII. Holiday Fundraising
DeeDee would like to send out a holiday card/flyer asking for donations. Lynn did it last year and raised quite a bit of money. We need someone to design the mailing and facilitate this project.
We discussed the possibility of doing a RLRR rescue calendar, but decided that it may be too late in the year and the profit margin may be slim.
Someone mentioned the idea of doing a poster with a collage of RLRR rescues' photos and using it for fundraising and/or as a thank you for donors. This seems like a more cost effective idea.

Notes from RLRR Metro Support Team meeting

NOTES FROM THE RLRR 4/27 MEETING
Lynn reported on the Pet Expo. RLRR received $245 in donations and $375 from the sale of totes, potholders, and dog bones.

DeeDee reported that 106 animals were altered at the AHS clinic at Rosie’s along with two emergency surgeries. Twenty-seven animals were surrendered or brought in as strays. Heartworm-positive dogs continue to be an expensive problem.

Colleen’s Cheyenne River trip was postponed.

We discussed the need for volunteers for the May Clinic (May 28-30). Since this is a larger clinic, we will need about 3-4 volunteers a day to support it. Clean-up day (Sunday), especially, requires a lot of work. We need food donations, as well. We will be feeding roughly 22 people daily.

The foster/adoption network has been very busy with applications for puppies. Almost all of the puppies that we have taken in to our RLRR network have been adopted or are in process.

We need volunteers who are willing to do home visits to ensure that the puppies are going to appropriate environments.

We need more foster homes, too. Right now, we have four.

Liz spoke about the possibility of doing adoption days at Chuck and Don’s in Elk River.

We discussed fundraising options such as a dinner/auction. There was discussion about having a garage sale at the end of summer or early Fall.

We will need a transport in about two weeks.

The next meeting will be in June.
