Little Clown

On March 7th, I received a call that a man wanted to surrender a litle 1/2 pom- 1/2 pug small breed male dog. They called him Chewy. Well, we recently had another Chewy, so we called him Chewy II.

MARY & FRANKIE (formerly Chewy II)I took a trip to Red Lake and met Casey who said he had rescued the dog from a family who no longer wanted him as he was lame and his tail was chewed off midway due to a dog attack. Chewy II was a mess and was limping on the left leg which was underdeveloped and had the evidence of previous injury.

CHEWY II ON ARRIVAL AT RLRRChewy II very quiet on arrival and never barked or ran around like most of the small dogs we get. He was a real mess physically but a real doll who seemed so happy to lay quietly on his little bed at the cathouse.

It just so happened that Linda was planning a trip to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue the very next day and, needless to say, she fell in love with this boy right away.

The following day, Chewy started showing symptoms of a swollen joint on one of his front legs so he had trouble walking at all. Linda and I took him to the vet and there he was found to have lymes disease so they gave him antibiotics and rimadyl for his pain.

By the next day, Chewy II was walking and much happier, especially when he rode out with Linda to the metro, where he was adopted by Linda's sister Mary who had been looking for a special dog for a while.

LINDA & CHEWY II (now Frankie)LINDA WROTE:
I am forwarding a picture of Chewy with my sister Mary. She was immediately in love with him. She has already started training and reports that he almost has "sit" down. He is a bright little guy! He has had no accidents inside, and follows their older dog Bear outside to pee and poo.

I stayed for an hour or so when I dropped him off, and Mary said he was a little upset and looking for me after I left. But I think he has bonded with her already. Slept in their bed last night.

Has barked ONCE at someone walking behind their fenced yard. She said he has a remarkably deep voice, but has only barked that once. Her grandkids have been over and he is calm and friendly with children. My parents met him last night and also love him.

Just spoke to Mary and they were headed out on a walk. He's great on the leash! So I think all will be well.

FRANKIE CHEWINGNOTE FROM MARY:
Karen,
I wanted to update you Chewie's adventures since he left you. He is quite the character - every day his personality blooms a little more.

He loves to go on walks, tear around the backyard after a ball, and LOVES his treats and chew sticks. He has shown us some circus tricks - standing on his front legs and almost doing flips when he sees that it's meal time. I've tried to get pictures - but he's too fast! He knows if he waits patiently during dinner there will be something tasty at the end.

FRANKIE LOUNGINGHe was glued to me for the first couple days - but is now spending time with the man of the house and enjoys visiting with anyone who comes over. He sleeps in bed with us and Bear - good thing we have a big bed! Bear is adjusting - and Frankie is showing respect to the senior member of the house.

BEAR & FRANKIEHe just seemed like his new name Frank (or Frankie) although Linda hates it, we think it fits his larger than his size attitude and personality.

He is going in to get neutered and have his tail fixed up Thursday.

POST-SURGERY UPDATE:
I just spoke with Mary, and she sends the following report on Frankie, the former Chewy II. (she can't type because she is to busy holding the still sleepy Frankie in her arms):

Frankie went in for tail surgery and neutering today. After he was under anesthesia, the vets did a thorough examination of his tail injury and decided not to operate on it. They called Mary and told her that since tail surgery is very painful for dogs, and since they saw that skin tissue has started to form over the bone stub they recommended the conservative approach. They will continue to monitor it but expect it to heal on its own. Hooray!

Mary sends her best and thanks everyone again for the delightful little guy who has already brought so much joy to their household.
