Update on Christmas gift: St Nicholas

Nicholas arrived at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue just before Christmas 2016 and we shared his story in January (http://redlakerosie.blogspot.com/2017/01/saint-nicholas.html). One of his rescuers, Connie, recently came to visit him and shared the story:

RLRR CATTERY
"For my birthday today, my "not- so-cat-crazy" husband, tried to appease me and do something he knew would mean a lot to me. He took me for a ride to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, in Trail, Minnesota, to visit Nicholas!

NICHOLAS WHEN HE WAS RESCUED
If my friends remember... Nicholas is the 14-year-old kitty that Kristin B. rescued just before Christmas, and gave to me. He had mats so bad, he had to be shaved, he had frost bite, nails grown so long they grew into his toe pads and he couldn't walk, he was sick, and he was found the morning after a 29-degrees-below-zero night!

Karen Good, founder of RLRR, took him in and then found out he was also feline leukemia positive. She so kindly decided to keep him there at their cattery for the remainder of his days. Well, Nicholas is a fighter and is doing very well!!

He stays in a large caged-in area when there are other cats at the rescue. When there aren't, he gets to roam the complex. He does get to have the small dogs as buddies. His hair is growing back in nicely and he is gaining weight. Karen thought his breath smelled bad, so she took him to the vet a few days ago thinking he may need some teeth extracted. But the vet said they were all strong! All he needed was a teeth cleaning.

He is getting GREAT care there at the rescue, and he is very much loved. I know there were a lot of followers with his story so I wanted to update. If there are any of his well-wishers that would like to donate to his Rescue for him, let me know, and I can give you information. They are in need of large "pee-pads" for him, as he misses the litter box on occasion, and food. The only food he eats, even though they have tried all kinds of high-end food, is canned Friskies, shredded.

It was so fun to see Nicholas, and to tour Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Karen rescues and cares for many animals in need of urgent care from around the reservation. They are so lucky to have her and her facility, and the kind people who help her out."

What a sweet reunion!! Happy Birthday, Connie!

Saint Nicholas

Just a day before Christmas a very special gift came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from a kind lady named Connie from a community not far from Red Lake.

Nicholas was found freezing on a chunk of ice nearly dead as it was -20 below outside that morning. He was rescued and it was discovered that he could not even walk as his claws were ingrown into his foot pads. Poor boy was also very old.

His matted fur was shaved and after a few days he was sent to Red Lake Rosie's for convalescence. It was discovered that St. Nicholas was feline leukemia positive which was confirmed by a saliva and a blood test. Nicholas has his good days and bad days. He sometimes has a ravenous appetite and sometimes no appetite at all.

RLRR is trying to make him as comfortable as possible though the outcome is not certain for Nicholas. He will have further blood testing in the upcoming weeks.

Thank you Connie and all involved in his rescue and for entrusting his care to RLRR.
