New name for a new dog :-)

UPDATE FROM RAGOM (Retrieve A Golden Of Minnesota):
I thought you might enjoy this update on Hooch the Golden that we took in back in July of 2011 after he had been attacked by a bear or something. (PleasSee original blog post here.)

As you can see, he is doing great and is going to be a therapy dog!! Thanks for all the great work you do.

08/21/2013:
I can not believe this sweet boy has been with us for two years now!! I can't believe my little puppy is going to be turning three next month (September 2013)!

Hunter, formerly Hooch, has grown so well in the time he has been with us. All of the scars from his ordeal as a puppy are gone, and if  you didn't know him, you would never be able to tell he was ever injured!

Hunter will take his final exam to become a therapy dog later this year, but is already registered as a Canine Good Citizen with the AKC.

Hunter quickly became the center of our family. He is my Punkin, my mom's Golden Boy, my dad's Bonfire Buddy and my brother's hunting/fishing partner. His favorite, though, is fishing, hands down! He loves the boat, but he loves jumping off the boat even more! Once Hunt starts swimming, you can't get him to stop!

Hunter goes everywhere with us! His favorite places are Minnehaha Falls because he can swim in the river and Lebanon Park because he can run free on the trails and of course the dog park too.

He loves his two cat "siblings" and is always trying to play with them. He loves to play with the neighbor dogs too and is always sneaking over to their yard to rough house. When he can't sneak out, he loves to play fetch with his humans or throw his octopus around the living room. The octopus gets so much love form Hunter that it has to go to the Hunter Toy Hospital every week to get it's stuffing put back in and be stitched up.

Hunter is the best thing that could have possibly happened to us and I am thankful to RAGOM every day for saving amazing dogs like Hunter.

Hunter now Mick Update

A happy tail from Hunter, now Mick, from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Mick came in with a "brother" as a stray. His tongue had been partially burned possibly from ingesting some strong chemicals. Sounds like Mick is living the good life now complete with homemade baguettes.

MICK'S FAMILY SAYS:
Thought I would send you an update on Mick. I am not sure you would recognize him. He has a sunny, bright, zany personality and we love him. Although we affectionately refer to him as "Mick the Dick".

We discovered over the 4th of July that he loves to swim. Last weekend my husband and I took him canoeing with us. The picture below was taken just before he jumped out of the canoe. He can swim really really fast when a canoe is chasing him. (Don't worry we figured he would jump and were prepared).

Mick and I are taking obedience classes and he is the worst behaved, I struggle between being mortified and laughing til the tears run down my cheeks. Last Monday, my niece, who is going to cooking school, left me a baguette she had made. Mick not only ate the baguette but managed to find two bags of doggie treats and ate all those too.....

Unfortunately, this occurred between 4-5 p.m. and we had obedience class at 6:30. We were supposed to be working on heel but old Mick was not interested in treats cause his tummy was all nice and full.

We were sent to a quiet corner of the store to work on heeling but it involved crossing the main aisle of Petco. Before I could blink, Mick slipped out of his collar and headed for freedom and the front door. The dog trainer was hot on his heels. Just short of the door Mick turned saw the dog trainer (with the bag of treats) and reversed direction at top speed. He always comes that way but stops just short of bowling you over and throws himself on the ground at your feet. The week before he knocked the entire little barrier they put up around the lesson area over.

I can't be mad at him because he does everything with such joy. He's just one big happy guy. He has learned a lot of things, sit, down, off, no, out, walk, swim, chill, go to bed and we are working on stay and come. We love him to death.

August 28 transport

FIVE HUNGRY PUPSTom and Nancy came out and helped repair kennel doors on Friday, August 27th. The next day they met Karen and Carol in Bemidji on August 28th and took out 13 more animals. They met Barbara Olson in Motley and she went on to the metro. Here are some of the pics of animals that were transferred.

WHITE CLOUDANNIEHere is a litter of 5 puppies from White Earth Reservation that came in as surrenders at the clinic. The word is out about the success of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, and we are getting requests from Leech Lake and White Earth reservations for help with their homeless animals.

Red Lake Adopted Dog Monday

Wow, this is the best week ever for the Red Lake dogs in our foster program. We had five of them adopted in just over 8 days!

JULIUSOur boy Julius saved from the woods by Karen of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue-as were all of the dogs listed here-found his forever home on Father's Day. Julius is living out in Lake Elmo in a cabin-like environment which certainly suits a dog from the country. He got along with the cat right away. And lucky for Julius his auntie is Danielle a trainer from Canine Coach. So if he has any questions about training his new parents he knows who to call.

HUNTERHunter now Mick has a cushy life in Apple Valley. He has a work from home mom, lots of woods to explore, and a deck just for lounging on a Sunday morning. This dog came in to Karen's with a tongue that had been badly burned. He is still learning how to use it again. Here is what the new mom had to say, " We left him home alone for a couple of hours last night and he was fine. Before we left we wondered if we should close the door to the laundry room where we keep all our shoes. Paul said "No they are mostly your shoes he can chew those if he wants". Arriving home there was one shoe in the center of the living room (undamaged) and it was a great big ol' mens tennis shoe. HA Good Boy Mick!"

COPPERCopper now Duncan lives with a Golden named Cooper-hence the name change. He has kept his new parents busy trying to figure out how to keep him from climbing the fence. Duncan seems to think the grass is greener, the people are more friendly, and the squirrels much more interesting on the other side. Sometimes the rez dogs take a bit to settle into city life. Stay tuned for photos of Duncan's new hairdo. The groomer worked on his coat for over two hours.

ZEKEZeke our little terrier mix went to live with a family that had adopted a Pet Haven dog in the past. The parents are retired so Zeke will not be home alone for long. And the 16 year old son has lots of sports events to attend with his new dog. Zeke has come a long way from living alone behind a gas station.

SHILOHShiloh found her new home with a friend of her fosters. He owns a natural pet food store and takes the dogs with him to work everyday. He has another rescue dog that is a bit shy too just like Shiloh-or Shy-bun bun as her fosters called her. Congratulations to all these poochies and their new families! Thank you for considering rescue dogs.

And a big shout out thank you to Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for all she does for the homeless dogs and cats on the Red Lake reservation.

Saturday's small dog adoption event at the Calhoun Chuck & Don's was wagging with excitement as potential adopters poured in to admire our newest intakes.

CHUCKYChucky (another Red Lake dog) was the star of the show...he had a line of families waiting one after the other for the opportunity to spend a few minutes getting to know this cute little dude. So many great applications were received...Chucky will be in his forever home real soon!

Saturday transport

DeeDee came to the shelter on Friday, brought 1/2 pallet of canned dog foods and other supplies and spent the day working at the shelter. Then on Saturday, Sept. 5, she took a transport of 12 dogs and puppies, and 6 cats out to various rescues including Pet Haven, Second Hand Dogs, Cause for Paws, Pet Projects and RLRR foster homes.

We are so thankful to have DeeDee on our team to help countless Red Lake animals!!
