Luke & Duke: Alums of 1st RLRR clinic

UPDATE ON RLRR DOGS FROM VOLUNTEER JODI:

Luke and Duke were from the very first spay/neuter clinic that was held at Karen’s 9 years ago – March 17 to 19, 2006. It was with Animal Ark’s Neuter commuter – at the time. It was so different than today’s spay/neuter clinics. It was held at the cat house on Karen’s property and the dogs/cats recovered on the floor of the cat house. 

DUKE TODAY

Duke and Luke were fabulous black labs (of course). Karen received a call on these two dogs from I believe it was the game warden. Someone had been trying to kill Luke with a 2 x 4 but he wouldn’t die, so the warden was called and thankfully the warden called Karen. 

LUKE

Luke was the gentler of the two and when he woke from his neuter surgery he awoke wagging his tail. Duke woke up growling. Second Chance took them through their program and I got to foster both of them. 

DUKE IN YOUNGER DAYS

Duke stayed with me because he was a bit of a challenge and I accepted his challenge; Luke was adopted very quickly. Luke’s only residual medical issue from his beating was that his eye teared a bit but he wasn’t fearful of people whatsoever.

Jodi and Duke return to RLRR

Jodi of Cause For Paws makes a regular summer visit to the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and she brings her dog, Duke. Back in 2006, when Jodi made her first visit to RLRR, she adopted Duke. He had been a stray dog that was to be euthanized by animal control, but instead we took him in.  Happy Duke has had many good years in the care of Jodi.

That’s how our relationship began.  We are thankful for Cause For Paws who also takes our cats and gets them foster homes and forever homes.  Jodi came to the shelter on September 4th and volunteered her help for the day.  Her visit was timely as we had a load of winter straw coming and we had to clean out the straw shed which is no easy task.   

While at the shelter Jodi met Milo, Charlie and Lucky.  The three cats rode out with her on Saturday, September 7th to their foster homes.

UPDATE FROM JODI:
Charlie is getting adopted on Saturday to a lovely woman who has a shepherd mix. I have a picture of Lucky sleeping w/ Duke and my friend's dog Raja. No good picture of Milo yet but I'll keep trying.

He's still getting used to the house. I hope that I am able to help out at the next spay/neuter clinic and will be able to take a couple more cats home at that time too. We have an adoption day on Saturday and I remain hopeful that we can help you out more. Thank you.

Post Clinic Clean-up

Jodi and Chuck made a trip up to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue August 24-27th after the clinic. It was very helpful to get Jodi's help in the cathouse and the storage shed. We seemed to be behind in everything which is typical after the clinics.

As usual Jodi made friends with all the cats, and when she left she took out a Black Pearl's litter of four black kittens and a litter of two kittens, Flame & Smoke, who went to foster care with Cause for Paws, an organization which she co-founded many years ago.

She also brought an old friend Duke and Abby for a visit.. Jodi adopted Duke from Red Lake when we first met. She also had news of Luke (Duke's counterpart 6 years ago). The woman who adopted Luke said that he is well, getting up in age, and the best dog they've ever had.

RLRR wants to thank Jodi and others who come up and help at the shelter.

Enjoy the Fourth like Duke!

Our need for food for the animals was answered as volunteers collected food and transported it to RLRR. The O'Sullivan's answered the call for food and picked up 3,500 lbs of cat and dog kibble and cans generously donated by Eric and the Shed in Chaska.

RACHEL, JODI & CHUCKWhile unloading, we had more vistors bearing gifts. Jodi, Rachel and Chuck arrived from St. Paul with cat kibble and canned food. They also had with them Duke who had been here at the shelter some years ago, and Jodi adopted him. It was great to see Duke once again.

DUKE & BILLBill, his older brother who visited here last summer was also along.

Jodi, Rachel and Chuck were on a trip at Dancing Bear Resort near the Bemidji area and took 4 cats with them back to the metro.

TLC pups

We have already had a quick update from TLC on the litter of six:

Kids are doing good; they go in this afternoon for their shots. Boy can they sing when they want to. For the most part they do sleep thru the night until about 4:30 or 5:00 then they start to cry, but then either they go back to sleep or I do. LOL

Tales of three dogs

Red Lake dogs come in all shapes and sizes from all kinds of situations.

PORK CHOP
This tiny pup was found at the dump with his head stuck in a can -- no doubt trying to get food. The family who found him, took him home, fed him some meat from a pork chop and that's how he got his name. He was brought into the clinic, neutered and bathed, and went home with the family.

SAVAGE:
This dog is apparently a Shar Pei mix and was the runt of her litter, but is a runt no more. She was unspayed until this clinic and had had a number of litters. The owner explained that she got her name because she was always fiesty around food and very diligent about fending off other dogs from her pups.

Recently, the dog was out on the front porch and some guys came to rob the place armed with hatchets. They swung at the dog, but she fought them off and they went away.

DUKE
According to Karen, this 16-year-old shepherd belongs to a family in Red Lake. His leg injury was an old injury that keeps flaring up. The family that has Duke cares very much for him.

The photos and stories of these dogs touched me. I'm so glad their owners all cared enough about them to bring them to the clinic. I know our mission at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is making a difference for these and so many other animals. Thanks again to every person who helps to make the clinics and the daily work of the rescue possible.
