DOVE AND KITTENS

From the same household as Anna (featured yesterday), came this skinny mama and the remaining three kittens in her litter. They are darling: one is solid gray with short hair and looks just like her mom, one is medium-hair with gray and white including a cute little moustache, and the third one is a short-hair tabby.

Feline Rescue offered to take in the little family and they ended up with the same foster caregiver as deaf kitten Leo. He is about twice their size but they have become friends.

What a pleasant surprise!

NANCY & FIONAThere were lots of puppies and dogs needing a ride out to make room for more, (as the usual January puppy litters are now needing rescue) when I received a nice e-mail from Nancy that said "Do you need help? Ryan and I would like to come up this week."

RYANWhen they arrived on January 4th, they were loaded down with animal food and supplies as usual. I was just coming from Red Lake with a load of animals that needed to be tucked in.

Ryan helped with the new arrivals while Nancy took care of the cats.

The next morning they left with Anna, Lizzy, Dove, Leo and Luna on board to Tricounty Humane Society and a litter of chihuahua puppies to Twin City Pet Rescue.

Thank you Nancy and Ryan for coming to help Red Lake animals just in the nick of time.

Pet Haven partners with RLRR

THEODOREPet Haven has been an incredible help to Red Lake Rosie's. The cat division of Pet Haven has taken quite a few cats this year, which is a great help as there are so many cats in need of homes up on the reservation.

THEODORETheodore had been a RLRR foster cat for about 6 months and had not received any inquiries, so Pet Haven agreed to take him in order to get him more exposure at the adoption events, etc. He went to the vet for a routine check-up and it was discovered that he had severe stomatitis, which causes inflammation of the entire mouth and gums. It was decided that it would be best for Theo to have a dental with extractions as his condition can be very painful. Last Thursday, Theo had 26 teeth extracted - everything but his 4 canines! This, of course, is not a cheap procedure, but Pet Haven was willing to provide this care to Theo, so he would not have to suffer.

MINIPet Haven also recently took Mini, a little kitten who has an infected eye and whose mom was rejecting him. He will be on oral antiviral meds and special eye ointment until he's all healed up.

CHEVYChevy is another cat that Pet Haven has taken for RLRR. He had been caught in a rabbit snare and had sores around his back legs. He had also been outside all winter in below-freezing temperatures and as a result, his ears were frostbitten and half of each ear has fallen off.

DOVEDove and Sharmaine are RLRR cats who will be up for adoption soon through Pet Haven, as well.

SHARMAINEIt's nice to have such a dedicated rescue partner like Pet Haven to help RLRR with the cats who have medical conditions. One down, two to go

Three Red Lake dogs share a bed in their foster home.

Dove, in the middle, is a "failed foster". For non-foster-caregivers that may sound like the dog somehow failed, but, in fact, it is the foster caregiver who couldn't give her up and the foster home becomes her forever home. It is a good thing ;-)

On the left is Ellie and on the right is Dahlia who are both up for adoption on our website.

I think they would each like a bed of their own!

Happy Days for Shay!

I wanted to update everyone on Shay, who is now known as Dahlia.

Little Shay was rescued in Redby the same day we found Honey. This poor little girl was a bag of bones with skin lesions from her demodectic mange which ravaged her little body. She had survived the winter by eating her dead littermates according to the young girl who surrendered her to us.She was so very frightened at first we could not touch her, and gradually in less than a week she began to emerge out of her shell and started loving people!!

She was then taken to a foster home in Bemidji with Geri Wainscott for a period of time, and was visited by Tom and Nancy O'Sullivan and Carolyn May who took her to the "doggie wash". Dahlia then moved on to be fostered with Dee Dee in St. Paul.

SHAY AND CRYSTALOf course there she met other Red Lake dogs like Dove and Lily, both who have healed from mange using natural methods and special nutrition to build immune systems. Dahlia is responding to this treatment too.

A special thank you to all the people who made it possible for Shay to be rescued from a very hopeless situation and now has the opportunity to transform into the Dahlia butterfly she was always meant to be. Extreme Squirrel Chasing

When "Dove", an eight-week-old female pit mix puppy, came to Rosie's, she was starving, and had rickets from malnutrition. Due to her poor condition, she developed generalized Demodectic mange and a Staph infection.


I brought Dove down from Rosie's last April to foster at our house. During her first six weeks here as we tried to boost her immune system with good nutrition, supplements, and medicine, she went through several healing crises, and was very ill. We feared that we were going to lose her, but after a long struggle to get rid of the mange and other issues, she is healthy and glowing.

Squirrel hunting has become one of her favorite avocations, and along with our other Red Lake dog, Lily, they harass the poor squirrels who feed in our Cottonwood tree. Lily stands guard at the bottom of the tree, while Dove climbs aloft in pursuit - a hitherto unknown ability of pit bulls!

As with Lily, we have become failed fosters again, and Dove will be staying with us forever.
