Merry Christmas from 3 RLRR pups in one family!

Merry Christmas!

We would like to wish you another safe, warm and Happy Holiday season and let you know what my Red Lake pups were up to this year – Phoenix, Dylan and Casey.

Phoenix (aka Cinnamon) is still doing great – acting like a puppy even though she’s 8 years old this year! She hasn’t slowed down at all – she still loves to play with Casey and Dylan. When the boys want to go inside, she’ll look at us in a way that we know she wants to stay outside. She will just sit and stare at the bird feeders waiting for the squirrels. She still has quite the hunting instinct, although the squirrels seem to know to watch out for her! She still surprises me how smart she is. She is quite the sweetheart.

Dylan is doing great too! He is starting to talk even more that he’s getting older. He definitely has husky mixed in with his German Shepherd! He continues to be an outgoing gentleman when we have company – making sure people know how beautiful he is by insisting they pet him! He is a very special, sweet boy that loves to tease Casey when they are playing! I can’t believe he’s 7 years old this year.

Casey (aka Eddie) is a crazy man. His favorite pastime is retrieving a football that we can throw forever for him and he wouldn’t get tired! He’s learning how to talk to us by softly howling. Phoenix tries to mimic him, but can’t quite get it down. I’m wondering if he is part hound – he sure has a unique way of talking. He still loves and respects his pseudo Mom, Phoenix – and she still gets a wiggle butt from him. He continues to like to carry around different stuffed animals and will de-stuff them if they are new! He has quite the personality and will always be the baby of the house. He is 5 years old – where has the time gone?

Thank you Karen and everyone at Red Lake for helping these beautiful animals and all the animals needing help at Red Lake. Your continued commitment and dedication is amazing. I cannot explain the joy these animals have brought us – thank you for saving them. We couldn’t imagine life without them. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Annual Christmas greetings from 3 RLRR canines in one family!

We wanted to send you Christmas greetings again this year from former Red Lake Rosie's Rescue kids!

Phoenix (aka Cinnamon) is doing very well. She is quite the love and is learning hand signals! No formal training on this either - but if we point in one direction, off she goes in that direction! If we put our finger up to our lips & say "sshh"..she immediately becomes quiet and listens. She is also quite the mouse hunter - I'm thinking it's from surviving alone for 1-1/2 years. But she never bothers my inside cats when she's in the house. She is incredibly smart and is still the "boss" of all the boy dogs.

Dylan is still doing great too. He still goes to the chiropractor every 6 months, but we have seen no indication of issues with his back, which is very encouraging! He loves to play with the other dogs, but has no interest in hunting anything (unlike Phoenix). He appears to be a "lover" and not a "fighter"! He is also the instigator to get the other dogs running over to the fence to bark at our neighbor dog. He'll start running over to the fence - stop and look back at them - and pretend to run again to get them to run with him. Quite the tease! The Husky is also coming out in him - boy, can he talk! It's fun to hear him carry on.

Casey (aka Eddie) is doing good too. He watches Phoenix & I know is learning a lot from her. He's not quite so interested in hunting as she is, but will run with her if she chases something. If he's alone, he doesn't "hunt" like she does. He loves his stuffed toys and loves to play football outside. He is always carrying around some stuffed animal toy, and I have to keep him from going outside with them, where they'll get lost or weathered. He's learned to throw the toy at the door before going outside (tantrum??) He has learned what "football" means and will run and find one of his 3 outside footballs when we ask him where it is. He loves to chase it, but not quite willing to give it back all the time! When he gets frustrated (when Phoenix steals his toy) or excited (when we just get home), he howls like a train whistle! Not sure where he gets that from, but we love it!

Apollo, the big cream/white shepherd in the picture, is from a local rescue and tries to keep Dylan in check. Even though he has slight difficulty walking now, he still tries to chase Dylan occasionally. He's doing great for 12 years old!

They are quite the crew and we love them so much. Each has their own personality and it's so fun to watch them together. Thank you Karen for all you do and for rescuing these beautiful babies. Have a very safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!

Remember Eddie?

At a Red Lake clinic back in the spring of 2010...

"SPECIAL ED
Special Ed's family brought 2 other dogs in and when a volunteer was helping them get the dogs out of the car, the volunteer asked about the pup. The owners said nah, he's too young and the other dogs had just attacked him. They had to talk them into letting him get checked out and neutered. It wasn't until examination that they learned that he had a deformity to his skull.

COCONUT HELMET FOR SPECIAL EDEd had a puncture wound on top of his head and, upon further examination, Dr. Roni discovered he has a soft spot on his head and his skull is separated halfway down his nose. They will be building him a helmet to prevent further injuries--the coconut shell was just a joke :-) Unfortunately he will need to be in a helmet for the rest of his life, but, on the bright side, vet tech Lindsay from Akin Hills Animal Hospital plans to care for him in her own home!"

Eddie was about to get even luckier. He was featured on the blog in 2010 and 2011 as "Casey" with his three dog siblings in their Christmas photo card.

Then Karen received a note from Eddie/Casey's adopter, Tammy:

Just curious - do you know who Casey is? He was "Eddie"..the 3 month old puppy that had a puncture wound in his head, and they found out his skull wasn't completely formed yet. I think they termed it "fontanel", and he had to wear a coconut helmet! Well, he did for awhile, but not long - we couldn't keep it on him, and he didn't like it. So it was a matter of just careful monitoring of him with all the other dogs until it healed.

One other interesting thing about Casey - 80% of the time he has a stuffed animal in his mouth. He's either playing tug of war with Dylan or Phoenix, or just carrying it around. Most don't have stuffings - he tries to open a hole & pull out the stuffing as fast as he can!

I made the mistake of buying an indestructible squeaky toy. He loves to wake me up with that - and it truly is indestructible...what did I do? :)

Sure love these guys and girl - not sure what I'd do without them.

Such handsome dogs!!

Three of these four dogs came from Red Lake -- Remember their formal portraits from last year?. They have had the chance to achieve their full potential and they are obviously happy and healthy (See this previous post with the Red Lake BEFORE photos of Dylan and Phoenix/Cinnamon). A BIG Thanks to their adopters and our supporters and rescue partners like Act V who make happy endings like this possible!!

Attached is a 2011 Christmas Card from 3 Red Lake angels. They are all doing very well - they all love to play in the snow (now that we got a little!).

Phoenix (aka Cinnamon) is teaching Casey to hunt rabbits - it seems to be her life long dream!

Luckily she hasn't caught any, but she's teaching Casey to stand very still and look in the distance - it's funny seeing them standing together, almost with identical stances!

Dylan is doing well too - he prefers to sit and watch them - chasing things doesn't interest him. He'd prefer to "supervise"!

Apollo still tries to chase his tail and is beginning to bark (thanks to Casey, who is teaching Phoenix to bark too!). She never barked before Casey taught her how! It's so fun to watch them learn from each other!

They are such a joy - thank you so much for saving them! I admire the energy and determination you have to save these beautiful animals.

Getting BIG!!!!

Seems like these guys were just tiny pups leaving Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to go to foster care with TLC Canine Rescue...

They are getting BIG. They found their voice and if they can't see us or if we leave them outside by themselves without any other puppies they let us know. We get to weigh in tonight to see how much we weigh this week.
(Last week: Tara 11 lbs., Bella 9 lbs., Casey 12.8 lbs., Thor 11 lbs.)

Every rescued animal has a story...

A community member was at the garbage dump in Redby and a man came with his puppy that he was going to shoot. The community member told him not to shoot him and said she wanted him--so Pretty Boy Floyd was spared and came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue 3 days before the transport.

PRETTY BOY FLOYDHe is about 14 weeks old, about 15 lbs. and is very sweet. I checked him and he seems like he has been neutered, so perhaps he was at our March clinic. I am so sad the guy was just going to shoot him and throw him in the garbage. He left Saturday enroute to a foster home through St. Francis of Assissi.

TRANSPORT TRAILEROn Saturday, May 7 we had a major transport of 6 large dogs and 16 puppies all to foster care. Also, as a part of this transport, a large truck and trailer load of food was also picked up for delivery to the RLRR shelter.

TRANSPORT TEAMGeri and Karen met the O'Sullivans in Bemidji with the dogs and puppies where they were transferred to Tom's Pickup and also Nancy's car. Terry also came along to help.

TRANSPORT CREWKristin and Barbie met in Little Falls to take the precious canine cargo, and Eric from The Shed also met there with a load of donated food. Tom's truck and trailer were loaded full of much-needed food for Red Lake animals.

BATMANBatman, a pure bred German Shepherd, went with DeeDee to Second Hand Dog in Claremont.

TANNERWe are happy that Tanner is our first dog to be sent to RAGOM (Retrieve A Golden Of Minnesota).

SIX SHEP PUPS2 sheps went to Act V; 2 sheps went to MARS; 2 sheps went to Metro Mutts.

ROCRoc went to Pet Haven.

PRINCESSPrincess is a Australian shepherd mix that came injured from White Earth Reservation about 90 miles from RLRR. We had previously helped by getting Princess spayed, however now that Princess is injured the owner requested we take her because she has no way to get her medical care nor keep her safe. Princess was a model well-behaved quiet dog at the shelter during her brief stay. All Dog Rescue took her on May 7th into foster care.

JONASJonas had been at the shelter for some time and went to All Dog Rescue.

FOUR SHEP PUPS4 shep pups (Casey, Tara, Thor, Bella) went to TLC Canine Rescue.

HUSKY PUPS3 husky pups wer to MUSHR; 2 husky pups went to Secondhand Hounds.

SHAMUShamu was a very special needs boy that went to Liz, RLRR foster home. Shamu was neutered at our October 2010 clinic, and was since kept in a pen and developed some behaviors including jumping up on people and very hyper behavior. Being a very large dog he could easily knock people down. He is very friendly. The owner finally decided to surrender Shamu to RLRR where he spent a month. Thankfully, now Shamu will get one-to-one training and there will be hope for his adoption in the future.

It was a great relief to have the many dogs and puppies on to their new foster homes with a chance for a new life as well as getting the food supply not only for the shelter but for the many community people who come to the food shelf for pet kibble.

Merry Christmas from some Red Lake dogs!

Three of these four happy dogs are special needs dogs/pups that found their home with Tammy & Cliff. We want to thank Dr. Veronica Bartsch and her staff for saving them and finding them this great home.

The three from Red Lake are: Dylan who was not able to walk on his hind legs; Phoenix who was found with puppies, starving, full of mange, and shy; and Casey who came into a clinic with head development problems.

It is such a great story and makes all our work worthwhile.

Hi Karen! Thought I'd send you a Christmas greeting from several dogs - three from the Red Lake reservation.

CASEYCasey (the pup whose skull wasn't completely formed) is doing very well.
His skull has fused together, so he's back to running and playing like a
normal pup! He's affectionately called the "little construction
worker" since he's a big, solid puppy - and will try to go through things instead of around. He's got a lot of energy, but will only play with approved toys. I have stuffed animals around that he won't touch - he's very bright! He's about 11 months now.

PHOENIXPhoenix (aka Cinnamon) has become Casey's mom, and is constantly playing with him, but also is the disciplinarian. She went to obedience class this year and has passed her Canine Good Citizenship test! We're so proud of her! She is such a sweetheart, and quite a hunter. She's caught mice and loves to teach Casey how to chase squirrels. She's teaching him every day (is that good?) :-). From our guess, she's 3 years old.

DYLANDylan is doing very well, too, and loves to play with Casey. He has several nicknames "The Prince", "The Doctor", "The Scientist". He's very respectful of everyone and won't discipline Casey (that's Phoenix's job!), but will play fight with him lying on the floor for hours. He's become quite the talker.I'm thinking Casey may be learning this vocalization from him!. :-). He has become quite the prim and proper gentleman. He also went to obedience class this year and passed his Canine Good Citizenship test! He did so well! Dylan is 2 years old now and is starting to tease.(terrible 2's?)

APOLLOApollo has taken the role of "Uncle" to Casey. He occasionally tries to play with Casey, but I think Casey is still a little awed by Apollo's size, and will just wiggle his butt like crazy and try to give him kisses. It's pretty comical. Apollo is almost 10 - and still chasing his tail!

In memory of Casey

Here is a picture of Casey when we rescued him tied out on a chain with no bedding at this time of year three years ago. He was covered with many many scars and we think he was being used as a "bait dog".

CASEY AS HE WAS FOUNDPam of Pleading Paws drove all the way up north to transport Casey and some other dogs. He found him a great home.

Hi Karen!

Casey, the black lab that was found tied to a tree on a slab of ice was adopted by his foster mom and he had the best life with his forever family. Boy, did they spoil him!

Unfortunately, I just learned that he passed away on Dec. 22, 2009 from cancer of the jaw. He will be missed very, very much by all who met him!

I’ve attached some photos of him. He turned into a beautiful dog!
