Victim Zorro

RLRR got a call in midwinter that a large kitten had wandered to a residence and they requested us to pick it up. They said it had broken legs.

Susan and Justin answered the call and brought little Zorro to the shelter. While the cat's ears had no frostbite and the front legs showed no evidence of frostbite, the two hind feet looked crisp and made a sound like someone walking on wooden legs -- "Clunk- clunk- clunk."  The tail also had a wound.

ZORRO'S FEET
ZORRO'S TAIL

Jenny quickly made some contacts and the Animal Humane Society took in Zorro and performed surgery to remove the hind feet. Zorro was placed in a foster home, where he was thriving.

Here is an update from Zorro's foster mom:

"A well deserved rest for this pumpkin! Zorro is gaining energy every day! He's starting to play with toys and loves eating!! He loves to be held and purrs like crazy😍 His feet and tail amputations are healing beautifully and he's walking better every day."

When he was posted for adoption and he was quickly adopted.

This story is a reminder that, in spite of handicaps, the animals we rescue and serve are resilient and can overcome obstacles that we simply cannot comprehend.

Thank you to AHS, Jenny, transporters, and our supporters who make these miraculous rescues possible!

Jonah gets a makeover

Jonah, a Shih Tzu/Bichon mix, came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as a surrender in early April. A nice lady named Patsy rescued him and brought him to us. He was a very matted and dirty little boy!

Jonah was so matted it was hard to look at him. Mats don't just look bad, they negatively affect an animal's health and happiness. As mats get tighter and tighter, they continually and painfully pull at the skin underneath eventually causing sores and infection. They also harbor parasites and in the back become soiled with urine and feces.

We tucked him in for the night with food and water and straw in his kennel. We were so happy to find a place for him at TriCounty Humane Society in St. Cloud and that he could be transported the very next day. We hoped this poor boy would get a shave and a bath first thing.

Early the next morning as we prepared for the transport, Jenny and I went to Jonah’s kennel to get him loaded in a crate. To our dismay, Jonah darted out the door! It was still dark and almost impossible to see him. We were so discouraged to think we may have lost Jonah and in his miserable condition!

Finally, after an hour using headlights and flashlights, Jenny was able to run after Jonah and catch him.

We were rejoicing again when we found out that when Jonah arrived at Tricounty later that day,   there was a groomer waiting for him and he was treated with a shave and a bath immediately!

We received this update from Tricounty:
"Jonah looks amazing and is super sweet! He was neutered today and already has a deposit for adoption, so hopefully will start his new life tomorrow!"

Thank you to everyone who played a part in the rescue and relief of little Jonah who is now up for adoption. It is also a message to guardians of the long-haired and curly-haired dogs on the importance of regular grooming and bathing. Do not let your animal friends end up sick and miserable due to lack of grooming.

There will be grooming available at the upcoming clinic May 4, 5, and 6th in Redby. We are asking for a $10 donation per animal for grooming and wellness checkups.

A visit, plus a donation of clinic supplies!

What a nice surprise when Shannon and Mike drove into the driveway of Red Lake Rosie's shelter with a U-Haul trailer full of clinic and shelter supplies on Friday April 28th. They collected and purchased clinic supplies such as 240 bottles of water, paper products, rubber gloves, coffee, filters, puppy pads, and numerous other supplies.

They remembered our shelter cat Nicholas and brought a box of his favorite canned Friskies shreds for him. They also brought a batch of delicious muffins that Jo Tallchief, our RLRR board chairperson and I enjoyed.

Shannon and Mike got a chance to meet all the animals at the shelter. Shannon and Mike have three Red Lake cats that they adopted from Pet Haven, you can learn more about them in an earlier blog post HERE. Also riding along were their two family canines, shepherd mixes, Rudy and Rolly, 10-years-young, who also toured around the shelter. We happily expect to see Shannon and Mike at the shelter as volunteers this summer.

With the clinic coming up May 4, 5, 6, I could knock off many of the items on the shopping list. Not only does Red Lake Rosie's Rescue pay per animal for clinic services, but also for a contract wellness veterinarian, room rentals for volunteers, some refreshments for volunteers, transport fees, vaccine and medical supplies, cleaning supplies and paper products.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue asks the Red Lake community members to contribute $10 per animal and any nonmembers to pay $50 per animal to help defray these costs. When all expenses are added in we spend about $8,000 or more per clinic. It is well worth the investment, however, to help end the overpopulation of unwanted animals.

Thank you, Shannon and Mike and all the kind people, like our loyal food-preparer Claudia, who provide financial and material support for our vital neuter and spay clinics!

Another Rosie

On April 19th, a blind, 10-year-old, female pug named Rosie arrived at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue after a plea from a resident and her daughter. Susan and Justin answered the call and brought little Rosie to the shelter.

Rosie arrived wearing a heart necklace and she came with a letter handwritten from the heart:

“This is Rosie. She is blind. We rescued her from the women’s shelter about 10 years ago. Then we lost our home and she has been staying with a relative, but then that couldn't continue. Rosie can’t stay with us, so we, me and Lenelle, decided to surrender her to Rosie’s rescue, because we know you will find her a good home with someone who will pay lots of attention to her like we did.

"We love Rosie enough to give her a better home. Rosie also has a heart necklace on from me and Lenelle which we hope stays with her.

"Can you please keep us updated on her? Pictures? Anything on how she is doing and to see her new home?

"Rosie loves to be talked to and to have her shoulders massaged. She loves beggin strips, she sits and shakes hands for them. She eats moist and meaty burger dog food. Please take good care of her. Find her a good home. This hurts us to let her go, but we love her enough to let her go to a better home. She loves to sit on your legs.

"Thank you from Lauren and Lenelle"

We are pleased to report that Rosie has been accepted by Grey Face Rescue & Retirement in St. Cloud, MN. We will share updates. We hope to get a nice photo for her family to remember her.
