Shyla: Foster home, forever home

Have you ever heard the term "foster failure"? It sounds like a bad thing, but it is actually a good thing. We use the term when the family fostering an animal decides they cannot give it up and they adopt it themselves :-) A lot of foster families "fail" in their first attempt to foster an animal, and most families who foster experience it at some time. Shyla's foster family finally succumbed to charms of her bi-colored eyes.

Shyla came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from Ponemah back in December of 2012. She had been abandoned and was living under a trailer, walking on just three legs. See original post HERE.

She was fortunate to be taken in by ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation where she received the surgery and physical therapy she needed. She was so lucky to have her life saved and her leg! See post after surgery in January 2013 HERE.

ALL SMILES IN HER BED
COMMENTS FROM ACT V:
Shyla could barely walk upon arrival. It's been a long but successful journey for this sweet dog. And, she would never be as strong as she is today without the patience and dedication from her foster mom and dad.
SHYLA AND DAD
SHYLA AND MOM
It's true. We have a Foster failure for our one blue-eyed, one brown-eyed beauty.

Shyla has been living with her foster family for a loooooong time. They went through surgery and recovery together, physical therapy, the serious illness of the resident dog, a lot of mental healing and a few season changes. After allll that, they decided they are really meant to be together.

We could not be happier for this now-complete family.

Shyla (the second) is looking for a home

When Shyla was rescued, she was living under a burned-out mobile home with a broken hind leg. Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took her in (see earlier blog post) and sent her on to ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation for surgery to repair her leg and recovery time in a foster home.
She is most likely a mix of black lab and husky because she has the unique feature of one brown eye and one blue!
COMFORTABLE WITH DOGS AND CATS!
ACT V DESCRIBES SHYLA ON PETFINDER:
This is happy, sweet, mellow Shyla.  She is about 1-1/2 years old, had hip surgery -  is fully recovered and is living with another dog.
She is move-in ready and just needs a walk during the day and a nice comfy place to rest in the evening where she can stretch out and be with her people.
If you would like to meet her, email info@actvrescue.org and we will arrange your meet and greet...!
LIKES PEOPLE, TOO!

Shyla joins Elly May at Rainbow Bridge

SHYLA'S FAMILY SAYS:
I just wanted to send a big thank you for our dog Shyla. She was a three year old lab mix that was chained up outside her whole life. We adopted her from Pet Haven in 2007.

SHYLA AT THE NORTH SHORE
We unfortunately lost her this weekend to a tumor in her lung, which was making it hard for her to breathe. Even to the end she was the sweetest, nicest best dog in the whole world. We are truly broken hearted but were so fortunate that you guys took the time to rescue her and care for her when most would have written her off.

The hair around her neck never did grow back, but please know that her previous life was a distant memory due to the fact that she was pampered and enjoyed life to the fullest. She also could never pass up the chance to go after a squirrel, mouse or any other rodent that happened to come into our yard. Never killed one, just liked the game :)

Thank you for all the wonderful work you do! I forgot about Shyla's previous blog post and when I went back to read it, of course I started to bawl just because I can't believe that Shyla was as sweet as she was with such a horrible start. She never did like wearing a collar so we only made her wear it when we were camping. Now I can see why! The picture above is Shyla on the North shore on one of our last camping trips with her. She was just starting to get sick at this point but I am glad that she made the trip with us.

So, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for saving our beautiful Shyla. She had a fantastic life. Once our hearts are healed we are going to again adopt a Rosie's Red Lake dog! They are the best. If there is anything we can do in honor of Shyla please let us know. Thank you.

The D~ family

SHYLA WHEN RESCUED
SHYLA IN FOSTER CARE WITH PET HAVEN
KAREN EXPLAINS:
This dog Shyla was very special and the very first dog we ever got placed at Pet Haven back in 2007. Since then, we have placed many dogs with them, so you can see how Shyla was the beginning of a very important relationship with Pet Haven.  Ann was the intake person at that time.

It is so ironic that Shyla would pass within a few weeks from when Elly May passed.  They were both rescued from the same place in the winter of 2006 and most likely related -- maybe even sisters. Please read the earlier blog posts with their stories.

Shyla: Looking good!

Shyla came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue using only three legs. Remember her fabulous eyes? One brown and one blue!! She is in foster care through Act V and getting healthy and learning to trust again. She is completely gentle, just shy.
ACT V REPORTS:
Shyla is done with her physical therapy now and is using surgically repaired rear leg fairly well.
She's settled in with her fosters but is still very shy. Her coat is super soft and shiny now!

Shyla is on all fours!

Shyla was stray dog rescued in Ponemah just before Christmas (she is extra special because she has one brown eye and one blue eye). She was hungry, thirsty, frightened and she wasn't using her right hind leg at all.
She was lucky enough to be taken in by Act V Rescue and Rehabilitation where an x-ray showed her leg was broken in two places and she had buckshot in her abdomen. Surgery was performed and she is in physical therapy now, but everything is going well.
Shyla seems pretty relaxed in her foster home with another dog and a cat and a comfy couch they are all happy to share.
FROM ACT V'S FACEBOOK PAGE:
Shyla is clearly STANDING on all four legs in this photo...!!! Thanks to her foster family, Shyla is getting some range of motion exercise, walks, and a lot of attention...! It's all paying off - she is healing so nicely from surgery. She is SUCH a good girl in PT...!

John transports food up and animals down

On December 7th, John drove up a trailer and truckload of food that he picked up from Eric of The Shed and also from DeeDee courtesy of Chuck & Don's Pet Food Outlet to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.
The load was about 3000 lbs according to John's estimate.
It was so great that John found time the previous day to collect the food, mostly dog kibble and drive all the way to RLRR the very next day with the load of needed food.
We had the help of Kevin and Riley to unload and put in the storage barn.
On the way back to the metro John had 3 dogs with broken legs, puppies and kittens. A total of 13 were sqeezed in the cab of hs pickup!
Dr. Vickie of Act IV took 2 broken legs including Cardew and Shyla, and Mn Pitbull Rescue took Blue with a broken foot.
Zoey rode shotgun with John and Cisco.
Red Lake animals appreciate the food donations. The Shed and Chuck and Don's donate most of the food which supplies the animals at the shelter as well as many community animals through clinics and the food shelf.
Thank you John for the persistance in getting the food and delivering as well as getting the many needy animals on to rescues. And, Thank you Kevin for your help in unloading and stacking the food.

Shyla, the odd-eyed lab from Ponemah

On December 6th, a lab we named Shyla came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in the evening from Ponemah. Merri Jo had found this young female black labbie under a burned up mobile home. She was hungry and very frightened, but trusted Merri Jo enough to be rescued.
She turned out to be a very sweet little girl with one brown eye and one blue eye. Her rear leg was drawn up to her side and she hopped on three legs. Shyla was very thin and dehydrated. There was evidence that she had recently, perhaps 3 months ago, had a litter of puppies. There were, however, no puppies in sight anywhere.
It just so happened that John was bringing a load of food from the metro the next day- so I was hoping to get Shyla help as she obviously had a broken leg. Thankfully, Dr. Vickie of Act V stepped up and agreed to take Shyla the next day. So, Shyla was a guest at RLRR shelter for only one night. She was fed, watered, and given a nice straw bed to lay on.

The next day, she was carried to the transport pickup and she got to Act V that evening. It was a dream come true for Shyla. She went from suffering, hunger and loneliness within 24 hours to a warm bath and belly rubs, as well as much needed medical care.

Dr. Vickie took the first photographs when she arrived in Bloomington. Dr. Vickie X-rayed Shyla and discovered 2 breaks in the leg and also buckshot in her abdomen. Thank you to Merri Jo, John and Dr. Vickie for getting Shyla on to a good life. This is what rescue is all about, "teamwork brings results."

Karen

ACT V ADDS:
Sweet, shy Shyla is with our most experienced foster family. She has a lot of buckshot in her abdomen and had pups not too long ago. Her right femoral head is busted apart and I think there is also a break in the femur just below it. Her leg is much shorter as a result and it is an old break. I think she'll have the same surgery as Isaac had. Will keep you posted on that.
Vicki

UPDATE:
Shyla had her leg surgery on Monday the 17th- and went back to her foster home.
Her leg was saved. :-)

Merri Christmas for Ponemah pups

A week ago, Merri, a girl from Ponemah (the remote village 65 miles from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue), called and offered to round up puppies and any needy animals she could find that day. I told her fine. If you find animals that need help, bring them out to me at the shelter.

CORA & PANDA
She arrived at 3:30 with FIFTEEN animals: a litter of 4, four litters of 2, one adult dog, Shyla with a broken leg, and a juvenile small to medium size breed dog and one cat!! All are very needy and would have died. I'm so glad I got them.

SHYLA
Suddenly, all the outdoor kennels were full here along with 3 cages in the cathouse and one cage in my house with puppies. I almost fell over when Merri arrived with so many animals, but I told her we would contact her again these are placed.

CARDEW

DENISE SAYS: Act V Rescue & Rehabilitation took several of these animals and I will have more photos and updates in coming days.

How Shyla brought Pet Haven to RLRR

In the winter of 2006, we had rescued a number of very abused dogs
during one week at RLRR. I sent out pictures of a group of animals
we were hoping to find help for including now Ellie Mae Clampet, Shyla, a juvenile puppy with the eye poked out and a pitbull/lab dog named Casey with scars all over his face.

Someone forwarded the pictures to Pet Haven and Ann emailed me with the good news that Pet Haven would take Shyla.

SHYLA THENShyla was found on a very short chain at the same place Ellie Mae, the burned dog was found. She was starving and full of mange. The cold wind blew on her as she stood in the middle of an open area with no shelter. I was frantic to help her.

Thankfully, with assertiveness, I was able to take Shyla to the shelter. This began a long road of healing for her.

It was also the first dog we placed with Pet Haven which began a long relationship resulting in the placing dogs, many older and harder to place animals with medical issues.

SHYLA NOW WITH ANNWe are so appreciative of Pet Haven and the special spot they have in their heart for the Red Lake kids!
