Buffy's new home: Love, NO chains and a BFF dog!

Buffy is a six-month-old shepherd mix pup that came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in June with a chain embedded and cutting deeply into the flesh all around her neck. She was lucky to be alive, but in terrible pain and suffering from infection.

She received immediate care through RLRR and as soon as possible was transported to ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation for further treatment with 29 staples around her neck, antibiotics, pain meds, wound cleaning, dressing changes, laser healing, lots of treats and tons of love from her foster family.

I am amazed at how quickly she healed and became available for adoption. She visited with her potential new family and met their great dog and I am delighted to report that she has found her forever home!

Update on Buffy's recovery from embedded collar

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue introduced you to Buffy with the horrific embedded collar injury earlier this week (see post HERE) and we knew you would be waiting anxiously for an update. This recovery will take a long time, but she is receiving antibiotics, pain meds, laser treatments, and lots of love.

I am fostering this love bug!!! She is so happy and squiggly and just overjoyed at this happy turn her life has taken. Thank heavens for Red Lake Rosie's and ACT V Rescue! My first foster was Bryan, also a wonderful dog with an embedded collar. Thank you for saving them!!!

The horror of an embedded collar

It was a sad night at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue when a juvenile puppy arrived with an embedded chain around its neck. Poor Buffy, a beautiful German shepherd, is about 6 months old and only weighs 25 lbs.

She is very malnourished and has suffered all her life with this tight chain which now had grown into her neck leaving a large gash all around her neck, very deep and infected. The deepest laceration was under the chin. The odor was so strong I had to drive with the window open on the way to the vet. 

Buffy had a severe infection and a high fever. This sweet soul, immune to her pain, was wagging her tail as I took her into the vet. 

LOOK AT THE EMBEDDED CHAIN

There is a risk that the chain could cut the carotid artery and the animal will bleed to death or that the larynx would be destroyed in the process of removing chain. But, my fear and sadness turned to joy when I heard from the vet that she successfully removed it. Then, I knew Buffy's healing could begin.

There is not greater joy than to free an animal from an embedded chain or collar. The suffering leading up to their freedom cannot be imagined. I know that these photos are shocking, but this is the reality. Healing will be long and slow.

We are so happy that our wonderful rescue partners ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation were willing to take on Buffy's care and she was transported to them over the weekend.

BUFFY AND HIS FOSTER MOM

Buffy: Shave, bath and life indoors

Poor Buffy arrived the second week in January at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.  He was living outdoors in subzero weather and at first we thought he may be part schnauzer. Dan brought the little guy to the shelter. Buffy was very frightened at first, and gradually came around and was moved into the cathouse where he was warm and cared for by Geri.

After being in the cathouse a few days we got the good news that Jean Rice of Carver Scott Humane Society would take Buffy into her foster care and that’s when his new life began.

It was obvious that Buffy had never been groomed and his nails had not been clipped.  Thanks to Jean, Buffy was shaven, bathed and his nails were clipped. Buffy is actually a poodle!  Now Buffy has a new lease on life and hope for a forever home where he will be properly cared for. 

Red Lake Rosie’s would like to remind local residents that we provide grooming and bathing at our clinics, and there should be no reason why Buffy should have suffered all his life in this condition.  Also, if you decide to have a long-haired breed dog or cat, you MUST provide brushing and grooming. And certainly, these small dogs should not be living outside in this harsh climate!

PUPSTLC Canine Rescue took in a litter of small pups from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in February of 2011. Fully grown now and in their forever homes, they are SO GORGEOUS!!

TLC busy with RLRR pups

TLC Canine Rescue took in these young pups from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. They were scared when they first came to our house and now they are running around like wild kids.
