It was our first time at the Expo and it was very exciting and worthwhile! Our friendly RLRR volunteers, happy ambassador dogs, DVD, photos, brochures, t-shirts and dog & cat treats drew people to our corner booth. We raised $460 in t-shirt & treat sales and $271 in donations for a $731 profit. We collected a lot of high quality dog and cat food from vendors at the end of the Expo for RLRR. And we had 23 people sign up to receive the RLRR Newsletter, several of whom are interested in volunteering and transporting!
Several people told us they had adopted a Red Lake dog or cat through rescues and shelters that partnership with RLRR. Hearing comments like these is what it is all about!
1) We feel so good that we adopted a dog that had such a hard life – living outside with no shelter, scavenging for food and water. He truly appreciates every little thing we do for him.
2) I have never had such a wonderful loving dog.
3) When our eyes first met and I held Katie with her sparse fur and a raged ear and she cuddled in my arms, I knew that I had to get to know her better. After half an hour, we adopted each other. My life has never been so fulfilled!
4) I can’t imagine that he lived at the dump like many dogs do. No one cared if he lived or died until RLRR rescued him. As a foster, I had to coax him into the house with food and then he didn’t know how to walk on a floor. I’ll never forget how he stood frozen with his eyes wide open. I dribbled bits of food in a path that lead to the living room carpet. His body seemed to melt as he walked on something soft for the first time. It didn’t take him long to curl up into a plush doggie bed and start dreaming of a better life which happened a month later when he was adopted into his forever loving home.
5) My Red Lake dog took coaxing by her owners to surrender her. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but after reading his terrible abusive story, I had to take him. It seems like he can’t do enough to show us his love and appreciation. Our hearts are one.
6) I tell everyone that I am the proud parent of a Red Lake cat. One of my friends also adopted one. When I got Pearl home, she hid for several days and then came out a little more each day. With TLC and patience, she now sits on my lap as soon as I sit down. She loves it when I hum to her.
7) I had never heard of Red Lake dogs until I read about them on the Pet Haven website. Thank you Red Lake Rosie’s for rescuing them and Pet Haven for fostering them. Max is an older needy dog and is such a sweetheart. We took him to obedience school. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks! (RLRR has several wonderful rescues & shelters that we work with).
Thanks to our amazing volunteers and ambassador dogs who worked the RLRR booth, and made RLRR information sheets and yummy home-made all natural dog and cat treats!

Jackson Got Adopted
Happy ending for beautiful Jackson – the dog with a broken mandible and complete teeth loss on one side due to a terrible beating. After emergency vet care, Amber Anderson helped with his adoption. A nurturing second grade teacher adopted him and will give him lots of TLC for the rest of his life. Thanks to Amber and his adopter.

In October I went to Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue for the first time. I was a little apprehensive as I didn’t know what to expect. I was greeted by 9 large friendly dogs, who stay at Karen’s - rescued by her. Some were curious but kept their distance, some wanted pats on their heads and one wouldn’t even think about not dropping a ball or rock at my feet. I was quickly put to work assembling igloos & filling them with straw so they had houses for the winter.
Two other volunteers, Colleen and Carol, scrubbed, organized and cleaned part of a house that Karen used to live in into a palace fit for cat-kings and cat queens.
I have worked with animal rescues before but there are two things that stand out most for me: how Karen cares for the dogs and how nice they are. I am used to taking dogs out of their kennels one at a time for fear of them running away. At the outdoor dog shelter by Karen’s house, she would open the kennel doors twice a day and the dogs would run, jump and play together while we cleaned. Then Karen would round the dogs up to go back into their kennels. I was so glad to see the dogs play together and get so much exercise. That brings me to the second thing I noticed – how nice and sweet they are.
That brings me to Penny. Colleen, Carol and I were loading the vehicles with dogs to transport to the Cities. All weekend there had been one dog that tugged at my heart in an extra-special way – Penny. While all the dogs were playing, she would often sit on the sidelines and watch like a spectator – like a little lady. Penny had no place to go so she couldn’t come with us. Hopefully she could get on the November transport. When we hit the road for home I cried for the first hour – I couldn’t believe I had to leave her. Later I learned Penny didn’t make it on the November transport either. I would lay awake at night thinking of this sweet dog. Enough of that – I would foster her till I found her a home. Ann from Pet Haven knew my plan and asked if I could bring back Mina – another unbelievable sweet dog. I’d bring back as many as I could fit in my car if she had foster homes. I brought back 13 dogs (2 adults, 1 abused pup and 10 husky pups).
Penny stayed with me for 2 ½ weeks and then she hit the jackpot of all jackpots; a wonderful home with 3 children where she will get all the attention, all the food & all the warm beds she could ever want. They are keeping her name, Penny, but I call her Jackpot – because she hit the Jackpot and she loved it when I sang her the Jackpot song.

Rescued animals have been taken from garbage dumpsters, along highways, and sometimes surrendered by their owners.
Many animals rescued suffer from disease, starvation, dehydration, mange or injury.
The RLRR Support Team, rescue groups, shelters and fosters provide much needed assistance.

Full-time Native American School Teacher for 18 years teaching at-risk kids. Founded Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue Inc. in 2005. Karen has been referred to as the “Mother Theresa” of Red Lake and the animal world. Her compassion, dedication and hard work have lead many people to want to help her. Many say after meeting her that their lives have been touched in very special ways.
How Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue Got it’s Name:
Rosie was a dog rescued in 1998 and surrendered at the Beltrami Humane Society in Bemidji, MN. Someone there saw something special in Rosie and trained her as a therapy dog. She made her new home at a retirement home called Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji. Rosie still lives a very full life and adds joy to the residents there. Because of this unwanted and neglected dog – Karen vowed to help all animals find a home because they are all special and deserve a good life.
RLRR Focus:
1)Education
Educating Red Lake residents. Teaching basic animal care which includes feeding, watering, shelter, medical care and spay/neuter. Organizing booths and presentations at Red Lake Health Fairs and Clinics for discussing animal issues, abuse, and spay/neuter.
Tribal Code Revision Regarding Animal Abuse/Neglect. Working on revising the Red Lake Tribal Code as it pertains to animal abuse. There has never been a case of animal abuse in the tribal courts except for the protection of people against animals until now. Animal abuse cases have involved the order to destroy animals that have bitten people.
Developing a humane model to be replicated on other Indian Reservations. Based upon that education, Karen is teaching compassion to a society facing enormous challenges. Those who abuse animals may abuse children and women. By teaching compassion and providing an opportunity for volunteerism for students, everyday brutality faced on the reservation is reduced.
2) Medical Care
Provide medical care and spay/neuter from private donations at local vet clinics year round and from sponsored free animal clinics in the spring and summer. RLRR has coordinated 6 free clinics in the past 3 years which spay/neuter, vaccinate, de-worm, provide flea/tick applications and general medical care. Free clinics have been sponsored by HSUS RAVS (Rural Veterinary Services), Golden Valley Animal Humane Society and Animal Ark Neuter Commuter from Hastings.
3) Shelter and Placement
Dogs needing medical attention or waiting to go to a foster home, rescue group or shelter are housed in 14 outdoor kennels with cozy warm igloos. Small pups and cats are in an inside shelter. All rescued animals are provided homes off the reservation.
Red Lake Reservation Background:
Red Lake Reservation is in Northwestern Minnesota and is 564,426 acres (size of Rhode Island).
Unemployment is 39%.
9,000 people live on the reservation.
Average “old” age of any animal on the reservation is 3, due to the conditions of neglect and abuse.
Some people really care about their animals but don’t have the funds or knowledge to properly care for them. Others see dogs and cats as a nuisance.

Educating Red Lake residents. Teaching basic animal care which includes feeding, watering, shelter, medical care and spay/neuter. Organizing booths and presentations at Red Lake Health Fairs and Clinics for discussing animal issues, abuse, and spay/neuter.
Tribal Code Revision Regarding Animal Abuse/Neglect. Working on revising the Red Lake Tribal Code as it pertains to animal abuse. There has never been a case of animal abuse in the tribal courts except for the protection of people against animals until now. Animal abuse cases have involved the order to destroy animals that have bitten people.
Developing a humane model to be replicated on other Indian Reservations. Based upon that education, Karen is teaching compassion to a society facing enormous challenges. Those who abuse animals may abuse children and women. By teaching compassion and providing an opportunity for volunteerism for students, everyday brutality faced on the reservation is reduced.
2) Medical Care
Provide medical care and spay/neuter from private donations at local vet clinics year round and from sponsored free animal clinics in the spring and summer. RLRR has coordinated 6 free clinics in the past 3 years which spay/neuter, vaccinate, de-worm, provide flea/tick applications and general medical care. Free clinics have been sponsored by HSUS RAVS (Rural Veterinary Services), Golden Valley Animal Humane Society and Animal Ark Neuter Commuter from Hastings.
3) Shelter and Placement
Dogs needing medical attention or waiting to go to a foster home, rescue group or shelter are housed in 14 outdoor kennels with cozy warm igloos. Small pups and cats are in an inside shelter. All rescued animals are provided homes off the reservation.
Red Lake Reservation Background:
Red Lake Reservation is in Northwestern Minnesota and is 564,426 acres (size of Rhode Island).
Unemployment is 39%.
9,000 people live on the reservation.
Average “old” age of any animal on the reservation is 3, due to the conditions of neglect and abuse.
Some people really care about their animals but don’t have the funds or knowledge to properly care for them. Others see dogs and cats as a nuisance.

Twlya: I had a wonderful weekend – worked hard and thoroughly enjoyed meeting Kevin and Karen and working with Tanya and Mike. Karen is a very gracious, hospitable, humble person. I felt like I was in the presence of Mother Theresa. It would be so easy for Karen to get angry that the animals are in this terrible living situation on the reservation, but she seems determined to do what she can with the resources and help she has. She doesn't seem to "expect" anything, just graciously accepts help when it's offered. It's certainly an overwhelming situation, but I'm reminded of the starfish analogy –
"An old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish,beached and dying after a storm. A young man was picking them up andflinging them back into the ocean. "Why do you Bother?" the old manscoffed. "You're not saving enough to make a difference." The youngman picked up another starfish and put it back into the water. "Made a different to that one," he said." And that is what Karen and Red Lake Rosie's is doing. They are savingwho they can. Because we can't help all doesn't mean we shouldn't help who we can. Tanya: Our visit was very worthwhile and a humbling experience. Karen is definitely making a difference up there on the reservation! She truly is a special gal.....a real Wonder Woman! Karen and Kevin are wonderfully sincere people who should be commended on their efforts in helping to end animal cruelty. All of the work they do should not go unnoticed. I'm hopeful for the future of Rosie's Red Lake Rescue and I have faith that some day all the people on the reservation will understand how important it is to respect and take care of God's animals. Karen is definitely leading the way to a better world for both animals and the people of Red Lake. Also, Twyla was a pleasure to work with and meet. She is a great person too! I'm blessed to have met such kind and caring people!
