Little Millie is happy to be Emmy Lou

Kariin and her family adopted Millie, a little puppy from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, from Red Wing Humane Society. Millie came in to the shelter with fleas, dehydrated and malnourished. Millie is so happy now and well cared for. Her survival as a stray on the reservation this coming winter would have been doubtful. Makes it all worthwhile!

What a sad story about Millie. She has only been with us for a few days, but is doing fabulously. She had some dandruff when we got her, but I've given her a bath in a moisturizing shampoo and the dandruff is now gone. She is a whopping 12 pounds now, which is up almost a pound since we got her from the HS on Sunday. She was at the vet today for an initial checkup and she is free from intestinal parasites and doing great.

As you can see, she gets LOTS of attention at our house! Two of our three outdoor cats are a little unsure of her - but I'm sure they'll warm up in due time! She will be primarily an indoor dog at our house, so no cold winters for her.

I'm a stay-at-home mom, so am home with her most of the day. Our daily routine is that either myself or my husband has been getting up with her once each night to let her out. We joke that it's kind of like having a new baby - but easier - since she goes back to her crate so easily, unlike a newborn! ha!

We take morning and afternoon 'walks' to the end of our driveway, which is VERY long - and seems to be as far as she can handle so far. A lot of times I have to carry her part of the way back.... :)

Otherwise, she spends her time chewing rawhide, playing and napping. And every afternoon she joins us in the car to go pick up my daughter from Kindergarten. She usually naps then, too!

We chose a different name for her, as Millie is also the name of one of the kids' babysitters... it was a little confusing. :) So she is now Emmy Lou. We usually just call her Emmy. Again, I can't thank you enough for letting me know more about her life before she came to us. It sounds like before she found you, it was pretty dire.

The work you are doing up there is sooo appreciated by both canine and human folk!! I'd love to follow your blog, so if you could send me the link, I'd be happy to send more pics of her as I get more.

March 4 transport after clinic

Thanks to our faithful Red Lake Rosie's Rescue volunteers from the metro, Mike, Nate, Heidi and Barbie, 15 animals left on Sunday morning on two transports.

HUG AND A KISSMike and Nate took 4 puppies and 2 cats enroute to Twin City Pet Rescue and Karen met Barbie in Bemidji with 9 dogs and puppies enroute to All Dog, Pet Haven and MUSHR.

BARBIENATE & ASTRAHeidi headed off to Leech Lake to meet the O'Sullivans with the Bemidji Pound animals, and load up the Leech Lake Pound animals enroute to AHS.

DONATED FOODA large load of dog and cat kibble donated by Chuck and Don's with the help of DeeDee was transported by Barbie to Bemidji. RLRR animals are so happy to see the kibble as we were almost out of dog food!

CATORI & ASTRA SAY GOODBYEWe said our goodbyes to Astra and Catori who had been at the shelter for a long while. Both animals transformed from starving mangey lifeless animals to very beautiful creatures.

SILVER & SAFFIRESilver and Saffire, two semi feral puppies went to MUSHR.

SHY SIERRASierra went to Pet Haven.

MILLIEMillie the chihuahua went with Lindsay after the clinic.

NOLA & NELLANola and Nella went to Twin City Pet Rescue.

DeeDee's visit & transport

Bad weather and slippery roads did not stop DeeDee from making the long trip to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to deliver a large load of food and supplies, as well as transporting 22 puppies, dogs, cats and kittens to their new homes in the metro. Dee Dee arrived on January 22nd and left at noon on January 23rd.

THREE KITTENSLitter of 3 kittens went to Twin City Pet Rescue- we do have the mama at the shelter who will be spayed on Wednesday and returned to her home in Red Lake.

MIRANDAMiranda, a small dog from Ponemah was surrendered and went to Twin City Pet Rescue.

ALIAAlia is a beautiful tortie that was rescued from outdoors life and went to Twin City Rescue.

HOMERHomer, a very special polydactyl orange tabby has been at the shelter since May and also went to Twin City Rescue.

STARRStarr's family came in last week, and this little girl, recovering from mange went to Twin City Rescue foster home.

MILLIELittle Millie came in as a surrender last week. She reportedly was deformed and had digestive problems. We found a few days of water, worming, and good food made this angel adorable. Millie went to Act V.

MONA & MALONEMona and Malone, 2 little shep pups found in Red Lake went to Tricounty Humane Society.

REKAReka, a little female labbie was fostered by Jennifer Wolfe and is off to Animal Ark.

NINE PUPSA little litter of 9 mangy sheps came from Cass Lake and went to Animal Ark. They were at RLRR for several weeks getting good nutrition and treatment for mange and made great progress. Linda of Animal Ark will foster them and find them great homes as usual.

A big thank you to DeeDee for her continued support and dedication to Red Lake animals.

Update on Quillie Millie

Millie is back in her foster home and today is getting spayed and having additional quills surgically removed. We're hoping that after today she will be 100% quill-free. It really is incredible how badly she was hurt by the porcupine.

Her foster reports that her spirits are up and her energy level has improved dramatically. She's apparently a talker and enjoys talking while rolling on her back and being silly.

Our vet says we're not out of the woods yet, but all indications are positive!

Quillie Millie is very ill

Here is Millie at the shelter--very ill with a face full of infected quills. She is eating a little now, and walking.

UPDATE ONE:
I am happy to report that Kathryn of All Dog Rescue met me in Bemidji today and took Millie, the starving porcupine quill shep and Savannah, a little white shep that was only here at the shelter for 24 hours!!

Millie came in last Saturday with the faceful of quills and has made a speedy recovery. We did, however, find 2 more quills today that surfaced. She will have quills come to the surface of her face for some time. She has gained lots of weight and is feeling much better!

Savannah came yesterday late afternoon and had her lucky day today to start her new life.

UPDATE TWO:
Here's an update on Mille,the quill shep that came in last Saturday near death. . She went to All Dog yesterday- thankfully- as she needed emergency surgery today!! Karen

ALL DOG REPORT ONE:
Hi Karen, I wanted to let you know that sweet Millie is undergoing surgery right now. Her foster mom brought her to the vet today because Millie has been completely lethargic and drooling constantly.

The vet found that Millie's heart and lungs didn't sound good. They were worried the quills had traveled through the skin and embedded into her organs so did x-rays. The good news is that there don't appear to be signs of quills inside, though she does have an enlarged heart and a mild heart murmur, so likely has heart disease. Most importantly, the quills don't seem to have traveled that far, but they found quills in the back of her mouth/top of her throat and she has quills all over that seem to have broken off and then the skin healed over. It's possible the quills will work their way out, but the vet is concerned that the quills will instead push the other direction and get embedded in her organs.

MILLIEOur vet closes at 5pm, but because Millie was in extreme pain, the vet found techs willing to stay late to help Millie. They will be able to remove the quills at the back of her mouth that cannot be done with her conscious, and they will do incisions to remove all the quills they can feel under the skin. They won't get them all, but hopefully the ones they miss will work their way to the surface so they can be pulled out. She will need to remain hospitalized until Monday, but hopefully by then she will feel 100 times better.

You were right - this dog is very special. Incredibly sweet despite the pain. Hopefully she won't have any other issues as a result of the quills. Poor girl. I'm so glad we were able to get her yesterday so that she can get this done today.

ALL DOG REPORT TWO:
I feel so badly for her. They removed another 30 quills last night (mostly at the back of her mouth and under the skin on her face, neck and chest) and are confident there are more in her.

By shaving the hair they found a TON of abscesses in her skin - major infection all over. They are going to keep her at least until Monday evening and are doing heat compresses to try to get the remaining quills to push out.

They are worried they won't be able to get the infection under control if it is being caused by a quill under the skin that they cannot find. So one day at a time... This poor, poor dog. We are all hoping she survives this ordeal.

Plain Jane to Mosaics' Millie

Velvet Bear Mosaics welcomed a new Pet Haven foster dog into their home/studio.Here is what they had to say about Millie.

JANE AT RED LAKE ROSIE'S RESCUE"We picked up Millie from the Red Lake Transport on Sunday. Her original name was Jane but we needed to change it as we have a german shepherd named Jayne. Very shy and unsure we got her into the car and off we went. She rode great in the car. Good girl!

When we got home we introduced her to our dogs one at a time. They all did well. You could see that our dogs were thinking "oh, another dog. Ok when's dinner?" New name for this girl, we came up with Millie.

MILLIEShe was not familiar with stairs so we worked on that first. My daughter Elanor is a pro at getting new dogs used to them, and within the day Millie was up and down, no problems. Millie is 8 months old and 30 lbs and all puppy. We are working on the potty training and she already knows to go in her crate for bedtime.

As her personality unfolds I will post. So far she is sweet and is very curious about all and any activity. We have a vet appointment today and then hopefully a bath."
