Red Lake Adopted Dog Monday

Wow, this is the best week ever for the Red Lake dogs in our foster program. We had five of them adopted in just over 8 days!

JULIUSOur boy Julius saved from the woods by Karen of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue-as were all of the dogs listed here-found his forever home on Father's Day. Julius is living out in Lake Elmo in a cabin-like environment which certainly suits a dog from the country. He got along with the cat right away. And lucky for Julius his auntie is Danielle a trainer from Canine Coach. So if he has any questions about training his new parents he knows who to call.

HUNTERHunter now Mick has a cushy life in Apple Valley. He has a work from home mom, lots of woods to explore, and a deck just for lounging on a Sunday morning. This dog came in to Karen's with a tongue that had been badly burned. He is still learning how to use it again. Here is what the new mom had to say, " We left him home alone for a couple of hours last night and he was fine. Before we left we wondered if we should close the door to the laundry room where we keep all our shoes. Paul said "No they are mostly your shoes he can chew those if he wants". Arriving home there was one shoe in the center of the living room (undamaged) and it was a great big ol' mens tennis shoe. HA Good Boy Mick!"

COPPERCopper now Duncan lives with a Golden named Cooper-hence the name change. He has kept his new parents busy trying to figure out how to keep him from climbing the fence. Duncan seems to think the grass is greener, the people are more friendly, and the squirrels much more interesting on the other side. Sometimes the rez dogs take a bit to settle into city life. Stay tuned for photos of Duncan's new hairdo. The groomer worked on his coat for over two hours.

ZEKEZeke our little terrier mix went to live with a family that had adopted a Pet Haven dog in the past. The parents are retired so Zeke will not be home alone for long. And the 16 year old son has lots of sports events to attend with his new dog. Zeke has come a long way from living alone behind a gas station.

SHILOHShiloh found her new home with a friend of her fosters. He owns a natural pet food store and takes the dogs with him to work everyday. He has another rescue dog that is a bit shy too just like Shiloh-or Shy-bun bun as her fosters called her. Congratulations to all these poochies and their new families! Thank you for considering rescue dogs.

And a big shout out thank you to Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for all she does for the homeless dogs and cats on the Red Lake reservation.

Saturday's small dog adoption event at the Calhoun Chuck & Don's was wagging with excitement as potential adopters poured in to admire our newest intakes.

CHUCKYChucky (another Red Lake dog) was the star of the show...he had a line of families waiting one after the other for the opportunity to spend a few minutes getting to know this cute little dude. So many great applications were received...Chucky will be in his forever home real soon!

How many baths does it take...?

Julius and Copper went to Pet Haven from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue after the clinic on May 28.

JULIUSPoor Julius approached me as I was hanging the clinic banner in Redby, He was SO hungry and was full of ticks, and such a sweet boy as he carefully approached me from the long grass- asking for help- and when I took him to the clinic- his whole life changed. There he met Laura and lots of other volunteers who began pulling ticks and loving him.

Thank you to all who helped Julius!! Karen

COPPERCOMMENTS FROM LAURA:
I loved being at the clinic. Seeing the people bringing in their animals was encouraging. You are doing wonders in the community.

COPPER & JULIUSJulius loves Copper. It is like they are hanging together because they are from the same hood. I already have a foster for Copper. And the vet tech at our clinic is thinking about fostering/adopting Julius.

Cannot wait for Marilou to meet Julius. He looks so much like her Red Lake dog, Ahnung. Julius is about 1 1/2 so he could be one of her kids. Everyone that knows Ahnung says how much he looks like her. I have not said anything to Marilou. I want to see what she thinks.

JULIUS & LAURAFROM LAURA'S BLOG:
Dudley taught Julius how to play. Julius just came down from the Red Lake reservation covered in ticks and wounds from previous fights. Dudley helped him settle into the good life and there are toys are all over the living room to prove it.

Julius is such a loving boy despite the life he has led so far. He has charmed his way into the heart of a vet tech at Bloomington Vet. I have fallen for this guy too. Some dogs just grab your heart out of nowhere. Julius is one of those dogs.

COPPERCopper is another Red Lake dog that just arrived with Julius over the weekend. He already has a family interested in adopting him. He is a gorgeous golden mix in definite need of a good grooming. How many baths does it take to get a Red Lake dog clean?

FROM PET HAVEN DOG BLOG:
Julius is Pet Haven's most recent intake. He arrived less than a week ago, along with Copper from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. We have a ten day hold on all of our new dogs before we place them up for adoption (we want to make sure they are in good health!).

Well ... Copper tagged along to the adoption event this past Saturday and was a big hit. He's already got someone interested in him. Julius ALSO was a big hit and a vet tech from one of Pet Haven's veterinary partners has fallen head over heels in love with this boy.

JULIUSJulius is about a year and a half years old and was rescued by Karen of Red Lake ... he was covered with scars and scabs from old injuries and 200+ wood ticks! Everyone who has had the chance to meet him falls in love with his kind, gentle, wise spirit. He was given the nickname of "son of Ahnung" at the vet clinic.

In October, 2008 I had the good fortune of making my first trip up to Red Lake and met and fell in love with Ahnung [Ahnung is now a therapy dog working with at-risk youth and in hospice]. Julius has the same markings of Ahnung (pronounced ah-NUNG and means star in ojibway) .... and also has the same temperament .... who knows if Julius is truly Ahnung's son, but if he is I can personally vouch for the incredible spirit he inherited from his possible mama :)

There's a pretty good chance that Julius already has an adoptive home ... but if your heart is captured by Julius let us know ... there are probably other Julius' running around up north waiting to be rescued. Email us at dogs@pethavenmn.org.

MORE FROM MARILOU OF PETHAVEN:
I am even more convinced now that Julius is Ahnung's son :) They are so alike and they hit it off so well :) Julius even got Ahnung to play and gave her a kiss ;-)

I went with Laura to drop Julius off at his new foster (and potential adopter), Dave ... Dave is a vet tech at Bloomington Vet.

He fell in love with Ahnung back in fall, 2008 and said if there was ever another dog that was like Ahnung he would want to adopt the dog.

Well, Julius came along and now he's ready!! :) Assuming all goes well with the other dogs in the household (Grizzly and Alan) he plans to adopt Julius. I have a strong feeling it will all work out.

Of course, I put my plug in for Julius also becoming a therapy dog as I would love for Ahnung and Julius to go and "work" together at schools .... they could be the Red Lake Rosie's therapy dog team!!

Transport before clinic

We try to clear out the kennels at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue before a clinic, because there are always animals surrendered at the clinics and we need to make space for them. We had a nearly epic transport on May 23.

THREE OF SEVENFOUR OF SEVENDear Denise:

We had a major four-legged tranport in more ways than one.

LITTER OF TENONE OF THE TENThirty-one dogs, puppies and cats went on a journey to various rescues.

CARTER AND SMOKYKaren transported to Bemidji and met Tom and Nancy O'Sullivan and Geri Wainscott who drove on to Motley. There they met Barbara Olson who transported to Dee Dee Welles who transported them to St. Francis of Assissi, Pet Projects, Animal Ark, Pet Haven, ARVSS, and RLRR Petfinder foster homes in Rogers, MN.

JANIE AND JUDYVICTOR AND VINCENTWe are thankful to all the transporters and receiving shelters and groups who helped all these animals get the chance for a real home.

LULUAlso thank you to Tricounty for taking Goliath, Copper, and Olivia, 3 fully vetted, adoption ready cats.

Sincerely, Karen Good and RLRR
