Thank goodness for nine lives

Sena is a lovely young Himalayan cat that came in to Red Lake Rosie's rescue in mid-November 2012. She had been badly injured in a dog attack that left her with bones protruding from one of her rear legs. The owner would not bring the cat to the shelter, nor let her inside, so a nice couple went and got Sena and brought her to us.

The local vet said that Sena needed an amputation right away as she was badly infected already. We were so grateful when Pet Haven offered to take her.  She was in foster care while she recovered and is now in a forever home and doing very well.

 NOTES FROM PET HAVEN:

After surgery to amputate the leg, Sena (renamed Trinity) came on a transport to Pet Haven and received pain medications for the first time since the event.  She was very dehydrated and was fed mostly canned food with lots of water mixed in.  Moving to a new foster home she gradually regained her strength and all of her personality.

 Trin loves to be in charge and managed the dog whose home she lived in as well as a foster dog and made sure that they didn't get away with too much mischief.  

Favorite toys include little fake mice, balls, things she can carry in her mouth and no one could ever suspect she has just 3 legs.  

She has been adopted and will be the only pet in the home except when a dog comes for short stays periodically.  She'll be up to managing those dogs too!

Terri sent us an update on Eddy, a Red Lake dog her family adopted.  Terri has been a great volunteer transporting Red Lake, Leech Lake, Bemidji, and Roseau animals all winter.

UPDATE FROM EDDY'S FAMILY:

As promised here are pictures of our Red Lake Rosie's Rescue pup, Eddy. He is about 11 months now.   I don’t know what his name was before, but I got him through Pet Haven and Sandy Thomson was fostering him.  We adore him!

He started out at 19 lbs and now is about 70 lbs.  He needs a little more training (wow, for sure) but that is our problem…not his.  

He LOVES outside and is one of the most “oral” dogs I have ever met -- Likes something in his mouth all the time.  

He is playful and so good with other dogs.  Our other dog is a small terrier mix, and she and Eddy had a rough start, but they are now best friends.

A Cow named Sabrina

One day we had a report of a small dog, maybe a puppy named “Cow” was being bitten up by larger dogs at the man’s house.  He asked Red Lake Rosie’s to take the little black and white female dog.  I think he named her Cow because she reminded him of the colors and patterns on Holstein cows he had seen.

So, I went in search of Cow and after 2 days was able to gain custody of her.  At first very shy, with some bite wounds on her neck and throat.

 It did not take long for her to get very friendly and her personality to come out. In spite of her past history with larger dogs, she got along well with dogs of all sizes and did not seem to be afraid.  She loved to eat.  I renamed her Sabrina, and soon Sabrina was off to Act V to find her forever home.

ACT V REPORTS:

Look who arrived today...! SABRINA...! She is pretty scared but is being brave and peeking around the corner. She got into a scuffle with the big dogs on the Rez (over food) and had a bite wound under her chin but, now she is on the mend. 

Sabrina is obviously happy in her foster home and loves her foster sibling dog. Seems like this pup has been in a coma since her arrival...!!! Play-play-play...Sleep-sleep-sleep. :-)

She is being totally loved up by the kids in the family.

Gertie is well on her way to a full recovery from what Karen called, "One of the worst cases of mange she has seen". And we all know she has seen more dogs with mange than probably any of us!

HEALING HAS BEGUN

 Gertie was taken in by Act V Rescue & Rehabilitation and is in a foster home. She's still a growing pup.

 Dr. Vicki comments, "Gertie, after four weeks on ivermectin, is looking really good. Lots of hair regrown."

Red Lake cats on the move

AHS has been very wonderful the past 2 years in taking Red Lake cats and getting them altered and up for adoption. Jenny and Marilou have been assisting in the placement and follow-up on all animals sent AHS.

Under the Mn Paw protocol all animals are assessed and, if for any reason the animal is not adoptable, we are notified and have the option of taking the animal back.

During the past year we have had only had one cat that had to be returned to RLRR.  Fortunately, a very nice lady from the metro took the cat and fostered her until she found her a great home.

I have attached a picture of two of the beautiful cats that have been adopted. Sadie and Dusty are centerfolds for sure!

Grateful for doghouses

Thank you to ASPCA and Marilou for donating dog houses to Red Lake dogs.  We have received 4 large igloos used, 1 new igloo and 9 large barn type houses in the past few weeks. We understand that there are 2 new x-large igloos that will be sent up to us shortly on a transport.

 

Shelter is critical here in this harsh climate.  There are many community dogs that have no shelter, and we are happy to have dog houses and straw bales to give to those animals so they do not have to suffer in the elements-  Especially dogs that people keep on chains that have no options to seek shelter.

The dogs love the houses filled with straw.

Something to smile about!

NOTE FROM JOHN
.......today marks the one full year mark for Feather to have lived here with us.  She arrived late on the evening of March 30th of last year.  

She is a happy girl thanks to the efforts of people that believed in making the effort to give her a better life.  I have done the easy stuff.  

She is very thankful Karen to you and Linda and everyone else that made her new life possible.  She has been playing out in the side/back yard continually all day barking and displaying jubilation.
