Record 73 animals at RLRR this weekend

RLRR had a record high of 73 animals on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. when a little pup was surrendered that was found on the highway in Red Lake. We are so thankful that 19 animals left on Sunday morning for a chance to find their forever homes.

LAUREN AND ORPHAN PUPSJaycee recently went "on strike" so Lauren spent time bottling the orphans.Lauren and Mike arrived on Friday night and spend Saturday working at the shelter on various projects. We are very thankful for their dedication and many trips they have made to help Red Lake animals.

SPRINKLESprinkle went to Lauren and Mike for foster care- this little kitten was irresistible.

THREE HUSKY PUPS AND LONE PUP3 husky pups plus the one lone pup went to Animal Ark foster home.They left Sunday morning fully loaded with animals going to Tricounty Humane Society, All Dog Rescue, Animal Ark, Pet Projects, and to RLRR foster care homes. A special thanks to all these groups who are helping us out by taking in animal during a very high volume season.

Diesel -- My how you've grown!!

BABY PHOTODEEDEE SAYS:
This is an update on Diesel, the puppy who came in covered in motor oil. Can't believe he is so big and beautiful. He was such a sad, scrawny, little thing.

HIS MOM SAYS:
I thought maybe you folks would like to see Diesel almost grown up. He just finished his beginners class and will be heading on to intermediate, and just maybe down the line some UKC shows- he's a natural performer.
DENISE SAYS: Brings tears to my eyes.

Jessica

Jessica, a beautiful german shepherd, arrived with her litter in very poor condition a week ago. She is making great strides with puppy food and canned food.

POOR SKINNY JESSICAWe received a call last week that a mama shepherd had a litter of 14 and was in trouble -- not eating, not lactating -- and pups beginning to die.

Polly and I went to the place on Wednesday September 9 and picked them up in Barton's Camp housing project.

Poor Jessica was emaciated and had lots of patches of hair missing, but had no mange. We do not know what the missing patches of hide are from, but perhaps a previous severe case of mange which may have killed the hair roots.

JESSICA'S OLD WOUNDS
When we picked her up she had only 8 surviving pups, and one died on Thursday, the day after they arrived. Jessica was very hungry and we started feeding her good quality puppy kibble and canned food, thanks to the generous donations we get.

JESSICA'S SEVEN PUPSIn a day or so she began to produce milk which is sustaining the 7 surviving pups.

We have discovered that Jessica is a very wonderful dog and we know we will be able to find her a great home after the pups are weaned. She gets along well with all the dogs, and is always searching for food, even though we feed her all she wants.

JESSICA SMILINGIt was purely a case of malnourishment over a long period of time that caused Jessica's breakdown. She is happy and thriving right now, and her puppies are also doing very well.

RLRR dogs meet in the park

NOTE FROM RLRR METRO COMMITTEE MEMBER:
I was at "my" dog park near Maryland Avenue and 35E in St. Paul on Friday morning and starting chatting up a woman with four big dogs.
Turns out one of the dogs, a German Shepherd mix with floppy ears,
was a puppy at the RAVS clinic last July in Redby!!! This woman's
husband was one of the vet students and decided to take the pup when it turned out you had no room at RLRR for it. She said something about the dog having an allergic reaction to something so he was unable to be neutered during the clinic (at least I think that's what she said). It was so incredibly cool to see this big guy running around having a ball. I remember a Shep mix pup from RAVS that I spent some down time with, but I don't know if this is the same guy.

So very cool!!

Chelsea, the little princess

Last December I was fortunate enough to make my third trip to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to help Karen the founder with chores. The latest addition to my family, Ahnung, was rescued by Karen, then later brought into Pet Haven's foster program. We decided we needed to take a road trip (and yes, both Ahnung and I went!) to transport some dogs back to the Twin Cities. Unfortunately, one of the dogs that did not have a rescue to go to was Diedra (now named Chelsea). Her sister had a rescue but poor Chelsea had none ... Karen looked at me with these eyes that showed pain for the pups who have to contend with the frigid winters living in outdoor kennels, "we have to find a rescue to take her." One morning after completing chores and taking Ahnung and Jordan (a young shepherd pup who stayed inside with us in the cat house) for a walk, we went back inside and Chelsea plopped herself right outside the door with a look on her face that cried, "why can't I come in?" I took her photo and promised her i'd work to find her a foster ... well, here's an update from Chelsea (edited by her mom, Amy):

"When Marilou visited Red Lake Rosie's last winter I didn't realize that I was on my way to finding my forever home. She took some pictures of me playing in the snow and then suggested to someone that I would be the perfect puppy to foster. After meeting my new foster mom I knew it wouldn't be long before I would work my way into her heart and she would become my new mom! She thought I was the cutest little girl ever and instantly fell in love with me and my big dumbo ears.

Months later we are still having a great time. I now have 3 siblings (all kitties) and they have taught me the ways of the world - how to pounce, stalk 'prey', throw balls with my mouth and most importantly how to look at mom with puppy dog eyes to get whatever I want!! When I'm not home playing with my siblings, I love going to work with mom everyday and playing with my friends there. I also enjoy long walks (mom is working up to running), hiking through the woods and the dog park. I could go on for hours running and playing with other dogs at the park, so far there isn't a park I haven't loved. Just this last weekend I went to Renaissance Festival with my mom and some friends and had a blast! I am so thankful for Marilou bringing me back and finding me a wonderful home where I can live as the spoiled little princess I truly was meant to be!"

Jaycee saves orphaned pups

We are experiencing lots of puppies arriving at the shelter the past few weeks. Our efforts to reduce dog and cat reproduction is helping, however, we still are obligated to help the puppies and kittens that arrive.

JAYCEE, OUR HEROWe received a call last Saturday that a mama shepherd and a litter of 10 from Ponemah were in trouble. The mama had apparently eaten, what the owner thought was a fish, and it had killed her. The pups were very young and the outlook was not good for the little family.

We finally got the pups to the shelter yesterday, 6 days later, thanks to Polly who made the long trip to Ponemah and hunted down the poor little orphans. Since the call, l had died, and 2 more died on arrival at the shelter last night.

There are 7 surviving pups, whose eyes are just starting to open. They were ravenously hungry and we started to bottle feed them. Then we had the idea that maybe one of our 2 lactating moms here might foster them.

JAYCEE AND ORPHANSWell-Jessica who came in starving late last week was now producing milk but had 7 of her own pups to feed. She did not have enough milk for all.

Then we had our dear Jaycee who came in starving and with mange 2 weeks ago. After getting puppy kibble and canned food in unlimited quanitity- she has begun to produce great quantities of milk.

Her own 7 pups are now eating and are able to sustain themselves, so Mike and I made the decision to have Jaycee foster them and then supplement her feeding with noon bottling as well. The pups are thriving and hopefully will all survive.

JAYCEE AND ORPHANSIt is really not fair for Jaycee to have to feed another litter, but we keep telling her she will never have to have puppies again!! She is a wonderful dog and a great mom in spite of her own run-down condition.

Pet Projects is taking Jaycees own litter of 7 on Sunday freeing up Jaycee to be a full-time mom to the orphans. Lauren and Mike are coming for the weekend and will transport them out just in time.
