Marcus on the mend at home

Marcus was an abused dog. He came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue early in December 2013 with horrible grease burns on his back. See original story HERE. ARVSS in Wisconsin kindly took him into foster care. It took months for the wounds to heal.

Later he was discovered to have a painful dislocated hip from months ago that required surgery. He had just adjusted to live with the pain. See that story HERE. One of the vets who cared for Marcus through all this has adopted him and the best part of his life is now!

UPDATE FROM SUSIE OF ARVSS:
Marcus is doing great and lives on a hobby farm with one of the Veterinarians I work with :). They love him so much!

Here are a couple of pictures of Marcus. One is showing what a trouble maker he is (with paper towels). You can see the remaining scars on his back. The other photo is with Helen--who loves him very much !

MARCUS AFTER HIP SURGERY

Earlier this winter, Red Lake Rosie's rescued a dog named Marcus burned with hot grease (See earlier blog post HERE). He was taken in by ARVSS (Animal Rescue and Veterinary Support Services) in Wisconsin for foster care while he recovered. Recently, they also discovered and repaired his dislocated hip- We are so thankful to ARVSS for taking such great care of our animals!

We got together with a professional photographer Dog Grin Photography and he took some pictures of Marcus and Lydia :)

Marcus only has a small open wound now and the rest of his burn is nicely healed. Everyone falls in love with him. We have three applications on him already--HOWEVER, during his neuter surgery, it was discovered he had a dislocated hip joint! The vet said it has been dislocated for quite some time (3-4 months or longer) and he has just adjusted! 

None of us would have believed it if we had not seen the x-ray. He does have a funny prance, but there are no other indications that he has a problem. The vet said that, even though he doesn't act like it , the dislocated hip is painful, so he needs surgery to correct it. It's good we found the dislocation now, so we can take care of it before he is adopted :-)

I am happy we got pictures before the surgery because he will have a naked back let now for a while!!! He is gentle and loving--he is super wonderful with really small children! Doesn't like the leash too much, but he is learning :-)

Update on Marcus

The good news today is Marcus the dog from Red Lake with grease burns is going to either ACT V or ARVSS. Both are excellent programs. We will decide which group will take Marcus and will need transport help with this.

Marcus is doing well in the Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji and will remain there until we figure out a transport.

Burned dog needs help

Dear Friends: We are looking for a rescue to take Marcus - a juvenile dog with grease burns- - see below pics and story. We may also be looking for a transporter if we get a place for Marcus.

MARCUS’S STORY
Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue received a recorded message that there was a dog on this lady’s porch that was cut up with what she suspected was a machete. She left her name and referenced a call she had made to me
two days ago regarding her new neighbor who she allegedly saw pour hot water on her other dog. In her voice message she said, “I don’t know if the dog will live or not, but he is lying on my porch.”

We had no idea where this person lived, and an effort to reach her by phone was futile. With subzero temperatures to compound the problem, we knew we had to find the dog quickly or it would likely die.

We then turned to an idea that Facebook might help. We posted an urgent plea for anyone in Red Lake who knew this person to call Red Lake Rosie’s. What a pleasant surprise when people started helping. Then Aris called, and she knew this person and where she lived.

Dan quickly responded to help and he and Aris went to the residence and rescued a young black male juvenile lab about 8 months old with parts of his skin missing and infected. They thought the story about the machete and possible skinning was the problem.

Dan drove the dog he named Marcus to the Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji where it was determined that it was a hot grease burn that caused the damage. On investigating further, there was one other dog on the property with fewer but some similar lesions and we now suspect the lady did not witness hot water being poured on the dog, but rather hot grease.

We are hoping that we can follow up with law enforcement on this situation.

The good news is that Marcus is stabilized, warm, and had his wounds cleaned and is on antibiotics and pain medication. He will have to remain at the Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji until we find a program that will take this nice boy and give him an indoor home during his recovery. We do not have the facility to care for a burn here at the shelter.

Thank you all for your prayers, concern and help. A special thank you to Aris and Dan for their kindness in spite of the bad weather. They dropped everything and helped Marcus.

Animal Ark update on RLRR dogs

Hi Karen and DeeDee:

Ginger went home with a lady, her son and 3 year old grandson.

Hopefully Joey will find a good home next - he is a true "lap" dog in his opinion.

Marcus went home with another Ark alumni - we love those "repeat" adopters!

Angelica went into foster care to learn a little more about her and try to help her come out of her shell a little more - she is such a pretty gal - hopefully the "stint" in foster care will help her!

Oh, and lil' Shayla went home with a new Ark volunteer - so hopefully this will be her forever home - our trainer talked to her a lot about submissive peeing (she was extremely shy - by the time I took her back to the shelter she had come around some) and really socializing her.
