October Clinic: Surrendered animals

MISSY LIZ AND PUPS
Many surrendered animals came in at the October Clinic, which is fairly typical with winter looming.

Many moved on to rescues in the metro and elsewhere, but Red Lake Rosie's Rescue was also filled up.

There were cages to prepare and clean, dished to wash, kennels to clean, dogs to walk, puppies to feed.  The list was endless.

It was a great treat to have the help of Dennis during those post clinic days.  He arrived bearing gifts of coffee and chocolate from Melva and him which made my day.

Severely emaciated mama Grace and her pups

On the second day of the October clinic, Dan and Karen were able to pick up a beautiful, but severely emaciated white shepherd and her little family of nine pups -- eight white and one black -- that had been born only days earlier.
Gracie was very hungry and her puppies were very rundown from prenatal and postnatal malnutrition.  The mama had no milk to give in her condition.
Upon her entrance to the clinic, there was help and food.
As usual, all the great, compassionate, animal lovers were there feeding Gracie and also bottling the puppies to give them a chance.  The little black one was particularly weak.  Bear Stately, a local volunteer helped feed the puppies.
Gracie had many smaller meals at first and took many bathroom walks. After two days in our care,  they all had gained strength. Gracie was a wonderful mama and such a friendly and nice dog. She walked well on a leash and anxiously wanted to return to her babies each time.
It was such a relief when Julie Cross took Gracie and her puppies to Secondhand Hounds.  With winter coming and limited shelter space at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, it was a great blessing.
Thank you Dan, Julie, Bear, and all the clinic volunteers who pampered Grace and her family at the clinic!
 Sincerely, Karen

UPDATE TODAY FROM FOSTER MOM ON FACEBOOK:
I'm fostering them! They are in fact doing very well. The puppies are somewhat walking and climbing and are very vocal, and gaining weight every day! Gracie is a sweetheart and seems to get along with everyone. She still has stomach issues from being neglected/starved/emaciated but we are working through it

Feral no more

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue recovered 12 puppies recently from two litters in a feral colony in Red Lake.

The life of a feral dog can be a very sad and hard life. Puppies born in feral colonies have to compete for food and have parasites that are never treated. Most never survive to live adult lives but die in misery and are often victims of violence from the older pack members.

The pups were pretty wild at first, and we had hoped we could get them socialized and adoptable, but in some cases in the past, this was not always possible.

Thankfully these were young and that was in their favor. Also the lady who lived where the feral colony had puppies fed them after they stopped nursing, so they were somewhat accustomed to people.

There was a litter of 5 and a litter of 7 in the colony. The puppies were taken to the shelter and each litter was set up in a kennel with straw, food, and water. The pups were wormed and given a parvo/distemper shot, and topical revolution for fleas. We could meet their physical and medical needs but we knew we could not meet their emotional and social needs here at the shelter.

A request went out to several rescues, and thankfully we were able to send them out to foster homes.

Only one day later we get the good news as a picture speaks 1,000 words.

Thank you to all who helped to save these pups!

Karen

Here's an update from one foster mom:

They are doing great - the little boy - we call him Dirk - is the one who will need some work, he is food aggressive, but even tonight he is doing better. The little Girl - Gracie - is just a wonderful thing and should be ready to go in a few short weeks. They both are already taking to all the animals (Sheep, Chickens, Ducks, Dogs and Cats) just fine. They know who to stay away from and who to go to for comfort.

Thank you so much for letting me take them, I hope I will get the opportunity to foster for RLRR also, you are such an incredible group, and let's face it, then you would be getting the adoption fee and that would help you out. Maybe I could do a kitten for you all or something.

Rick is more than happy to help, we did decide, that next one, we will meet you or I will come up and get them and help out for the day/night.

New Penny

PET HAVEN FOSTER RECEIVES UPDATE ON GRACIE/PENNY:
Gracie, who's name was changed to Penny, is doing just great! We love her to pieces and she returns the love to us. She is totally immersed in our family and loves my children and grandchildren.

She is getting bigger and loves to play in the snow. I've plowed a number of paths in her back yard for her to run in and to make it easier to play ball. She also loves to jump through the deep snow and carry sticks around.

She is totally housebroken, enters her crate when we have to leave and LOVES to play. She sleeps next to our bed most of the night and then climbs on the bed towards morning loving to lay her head or paws on or over my ankles!

She is doing pretty good learning new things like stay and come and is very smart and is excellent in attempting to manipulate us to do what she wants. She has figured out if she drops something I don't want her to have, she will get a treat. So she brings items to me and drops them!

We are still working on stopping play biting and watching her for items she grabs that she shouldn't have like shoes, etc. All in all she is a very good dog being a little angel most of the time. She gets a lot of exercise even with the cold weather and one of my grandsons loves to take her for walks.

As I write this note to you she is laying in one of her favorite spots under the computer desk with her head on my foot.

She demands a lot of attention from all of us being the energetic pup that she is but we knew what we were in for getting a pup.

I can't begin to tell you how happy we are to have her and how much we love her. She loves Lee whom she has managed to wrap around her paws and she still likes to cuddle with both of us and loves to lay on pillows. Our son Charlie loves her too and my son-in-law says she has such a cool personality which is true.

I promise to send more pictures as soon as I can and am sending some of the latest I took of her.

God's blessing to you,
L&L

Sweet Pea Gracie

Check out Sweet Pea's story on the blog just a year ago here.

Sweet Pea came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue over a year ago after she was found in a ditch near Redby with two broken legs. Animal Ark took her home after a clinic and her recovery with surgery has been remarkable. Sweet Pea became Gracie when she was adopted into a new home with an adult shepherd that became her great friend.

Sadly, the friend recently died, so the family and Gracie came back to Animal Ark to visit and adopted another dog.

We are so thankful for the Ark and all they do for Red Lake animals!!
Karen

FROM ANIMAL ARK BLOG:
Our very beloved "Sweet Pea" came to visit yesterday and met her soon to be new sister, "Carlie"! Sweet Pea is now named Gracie - and is doing famously!

Unfortunately, the family lost their "eldest" shepherd last week and we send them our condolences!! Thank you for coming back to us to find a sibling for our little Sweet Pea!

Pet Haven places four RLRR dogs in one week!

FROM PET HAVEN DOG BLOG
Monday, October 25, 2010

It has been a busy adoption week for four of our Red Lake Rosie's Rescue dogs. Eudee, Mya, Gracie, and Charlie all found their forever homes. Thanks to all the foster families that took such good care of these dogs until they found their new families. Without you we would not have been able to save them.

CHARLIECharlie the springer/aussie mix then and now. He came in as a shy confused boy. But so loveable you could not resist that look on his face wanting you to pet him. He does have a bullet lodged in his knee that may cause him more discomfort as he ages. For now he is up for any romp with another dog willing to play with him.

CHARLIE & HIS FAMILYCharlie is living with a family of artists, mom working from home. He has a beagle sister, Roxy, a Pet Haven alum and a bunny that is VERY interesting to him. He also has two human siblings who love taking Charlie for walks in the park.

GRACIE & MYA BEFOREGracie and Mya were two little labbie sisters that came into Red Lake Rosie's together. Pet Haven had a foster willing to take both of them so we brought them to the cities.

MYAMya found her family first. Her new mom is a piano teacher who works out of her home. Mya is learning how to be a good student too and wait quietly through the lessons. This may take a while to accomplish but Mya is a smart girl and her mom is very patient. Mya is already signed up for puppy classes at Canine Coach.

GRACIEGracie now lives on 1/2 acre of land and has lots of neighbors and relatives with other dogs to enjoy that huge space with. Her parents both work part time so they have time to spend with her. They already shopped at Chuck and Don's and bought good food and many new toys and bones. Both of these girls are living the rez dog's dream.

EUDEE BEFOREEudee came to Pet Haven in rough shape. He suffered from Lyme disease, heartworm, and intestinal parasites. After a short vet stay and lots of medication to get him on the mend, Eudee came to his foster home to begin a 6-week recovery process from his heartworm treatment that involved a lot of sleeping and time in the kennel. Even as sick as he was, Eudee had a huge personality and loved nothing more than getting attention from his foster parents. He was a real trooper, and got through those 6 weeks like a champ. Once he got the all clear to be himself, his personality really came though.

EUDEE (CHECK OUT THAT SMILE!)Enter mom, dad and their four-year old twins. They have the perfect environment for Eudee…a large farm with plenty of room to chase squirrels and what Lisa described as “scent heaven” for Eudee! The kids took an immediate liking to him, and got him to sit several times for a treat. It was a perfect match!

Congratulations to all these dogs and their new families.

EUDEE AFTERKAREN SAYS:
I was so pleased to hear about Eudee, the little spaniel found homeless in the Little Rock Housing area last summer. It took many visits to the area to find him after people reported him wandering around looking for food.

He was matted and full of burdock and such a sad little guy.

Well times are great now--he went to Pet Haven where they discovered he had heartworm, so he received treatment and has been adopted to a great home where he has lots of doggie friends and will never have to be homeless again.
