Milan, another Red Lake collie

Late on the evening of June 3rd we got a call about some people in one of the villages that were going to go out in the woods and shoot a collie. A nice lady there brought the collie to Polly's holding pen in Red Lake.

The collie- we call Milan- was picked up by Mike the very next morning and he went to the local vet. He had 250 mL of pus drained from a giant abcess the size of a softball on his neck.

Milan has an infected eye and ear that is mangled. His fur is badly matted and had been for a long while. Ticks were all over his back and neck area.

In spite of all that Milan has been through, he is the nicest dog you could ever meet. He is so very meek and mild, and has a great personality.

We are so thankful to have a relationship with the Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue who responded within a few hours and said YES WE WILL TAKE MILAN! He will spend only two nights here at RLRR shelter and then Nancy O and Barbie will tranport him to Fridley on Wednesday, June 6th.

Almost every collie we have rescued in Red Lake has been in poor condition and injured and neglected in various ways, but Milan is the worst case we have seen. Mn/WI Collie Rescue has taken every one!

Thank you to his rescuers, Trudi, Polly, Mike, Barbie, Nancy, and MN/WI Collie Rescue for giving Milan a new life.

Milan is soon to be a very lucky guy!

Beautiful Bear Boelter

Bear Boelter is one of the reasons Red Lake Rosie's and Friends work so hard to rescue companion animals.

Bear was rescued as a puppy from Red Lake dump and now enjoys the good life in Eagan, Minnesota with his family who loves him very much.

Not only does he share a great home with his family, but also gets to travel, do a lot of running, and swimming.

He loves the snow!

Bear traveled to the North Shore and spent 4 days hiking from Two Harbors to Grand Marais.

He also frequents the Lebonan Hills Regional Park and has a great time.

Bear Boelter has his own facebook page and shows off his beautiful ancestry as a Siberian husky, Alaskan Malemute and Rottweiller mix. What a combination!

We want to thank supporters, rescues, transporters and of course, the wonderful people who adopt animals such as Bear- What a gem!

Chuckie

Chuckie's owner apparently bought this little guy a new red collar, then left him in a ditch on a country road in the middle of nowhere. This little old boy was a small mixed breed and weighs all of about 8 pounds. We think he is about 8 years old.

Someone came by on May 14th and saw him lying in the ditch, and felt compassion and dropped him to Gonvick vet and called Red Lake Rosie's Rescue- and of course we took him in. He came to be known as Chuckie, and later Chuckie Cheese.

Chuckie is VERY thin, and dehydrated, and we cleaned up his teeth at the vet, and got him a shot of convenia, long acting antibiotic. He is very sweet. He tested positive for anaplasma and lymes which may account for his limping. Thankfully, he had no heartworm.

Chuckie lived in an outdoor kennel here at the shelter for 12 days. He went for morning and evening strolls and was a very sweet boy. Chuckie got along well with all the dogs, big and small and would follow Mike and Karen around the shelter.

Pet Haven took an interest in Chuckie's story and on May 26th he rode out for a foster home. This is not the first time Pet Haven has stepped up to take an older dog that most would reject. We just felt that after being abandoned on the highway how could we not extend a great effort to find Chuckie a good home for the remaining years of his life.

Thanks Twin City Pet Rescue!

Twin City Pet Rescue has been a great partner of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue this past year. They have taken many dogs and cats into their foster program and found homes for them.

Most recently they answered the call and took in three cats, Dona and Dana two juvenile calicos from Ponemah, and Dancer, a juvenile female that was left behind after a housefire in Red Lake.

On the same transport they took a small dog, named Rufus, that had been surrendered and fostered at Carol's house in Bemidji. They left on transport May 26th.

He is Jack Russell and Havanese, probably about 9 months old now. Very shy, but warms up nicely and then is very affectionate and snuggly. He needs to learn some manners, but seems pretty smart.

We appreciate the network of rescues that have been so responsive to the needs of the Red Lake animals.

Chloe: Fearful to Carefree

Chloe came in as a surrender to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue last winter. She was very frightened and spent only 3 days at the shelter and before heading to foster care through Pet Haven. So happy to see how well she is doing now.

FEARFULUPDATE ON CHLOE FROM HER NEW FAMILY:
Chloe has been everything that we were hoping she would be and more! I have attached a couple of photos, but I can tell you that even our cats have adopted her, too.

CHLOEWe love to walk her, and she loves running with Anne to Lake Harriet!

She is getting used to our house, and seems comfortable walking on wood and ceramic floors now. Our bathroom tub faucets squeak when they are turned on/off, and Chloe will whine and run upstairs concerned about something. We don't know what she is doing, but maybe she thinks an animal is squeaking.

CAREFREEAll in all, she is a very nice addition to our house, and we thank you.

Cheyenne Alicia: Her good life

Just a quick note and some recent photos of our little girl, Cheyenne Alicia...hope you like them. You'll find photos of her at home and in the backyard. There is also one photo of her first trip to the beach: her first trip to the ocean and as you can see, she loves it.

Cheyenne is doing fantastic. She's settled into country living like a pro, as if she has always been here. Sometimes she is the first to hear something outside and she is quick to let us know by barking and running around the living room. Her canine brother is quick behind. Sometimes we let them out to check on things; sometimes we don't. When we do she is quick to follow Damon out into the yard, each of them running to a different corner of the fenced yard to see what is invading their space. Of course, by their barking, whatever it is is gone quickly. Sometimes it is deer down at our deer feeder; they look back up at the dogs unafraid. Sometimes it is a raccoon wandering around the property. Cheyenne is very proud of herself when she protects her property, and deservedly so.

She has become quite a homebody. She remains on a long rope connected to her leash and harness with Damon on the other end. She can only run away as far as he'll let her. Every time we walk, though, we unleash Damon and Cheyenne follows him close behind. We've let her off the leash a few times and she's been a good girl following Damon out of the house to the car to greet Daddy and when they go in, she is right behind them. She is very much a family dog, but every now and then the huntress comes out in her when she hears, sees or smells something. Because the Husky Spirit is so strong in her, we can't let her fully off the leash just yet. Though, after a full year in our new home, we will begin to try and do so slowly and see what happens.

She is still playing mother to our two senior cats, Charlie and Princess.

Some of her favorite things to do: curling up on the couch or bed with mommy and /or daddy and getting loving. She loves getting her cheeks and ears rubbed. And if you stop too early, she'll grab your arm or hand with her paw. She loves when mommy bends hown and hugs both she and Damon at the same time. She also loves when mommy sits down on the middle of the sofa and they each get a side and time to cuddle with her. She loves food and is quite the chow hound. We have to watch that she she doesn't get too fat, as she likes to lounge around while Damon wants to go, go, go. Her favorite food is the same as Princess: fresh seafood. She even likes mango, broccoli, zucchini and cheese. She does enjoy going for family walks everyday; she walks so proudy on her leash alongside Damon in front of us. She now looks forward to her Sunday drives with Damon and daddy. She's still not sure of it and cringes whenever a big rig goes by us on the drive.

CHEYENNE & DAMON AT THE BEACHShe loves and adores her big brother, Damon and can't be separated from him. One night Damon had to spend over at the veterinary hospital to remove a fatty lipoma and she was lost without his presence. She wouldn't eat without him. She enjoyed her walk but you could see she missed him. Good thing he wasn't gone for long. Of course, when we went to pick up Damon, she had to come along and she "sang" to him at the hospital when she heard him come out. She hadn't even seen him yet. She was so happy to see him again.

As I write this, she is alongside me, cuddled up with her head close to me, grabbing my left arm when I stop petting her. Ever try to type with just one hand? She's a sweetie. She's truly a loving, beautiful, protective girl and we are so glad we adopted her. She's only been with us fifteen months now, but it seems as if she has been with us forever. Damon loves her too, and is very protective of her, especially around other dogs. He won't let them near her and she won't let other dogs near him. In the dog park that is different; they are socializing and have no problem with that. When we clip his nails, she stays close by. When we clip her nails, Damon is close by his eyes steady on the "evil nail clippers."

Youth Works Group 1

It was a lovely day on Monday, June 6th. It was sunny and warm - almost perfect. About 10:00 am 2 vans drove in the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue loaded with happy faces who were ready to put in a hard days work.

With paint brushes in hand they began to work on the cathouse paint job, and made great progress.

Groups also worked on the grounds work including brushing, cutting grass and trimming along the sides of the kennels.

Another crew worked on the kennel cleaning using the power washer.

The dogs including Big Joe, Reilly, Snowbelle, Lucy, Bear, Nibi, Panda, Ethel, and Sheila were free-roaming all day making friends with the many people at the shelter. They enjoyed a picnic and shared some with the dogs who were especially interested during lunch!

We got so much accomplished in only one day and another team will arrive tommorrow and continue the work.

These volunteers came all the way from Indiana to help with many projects on the Red Lake Reservation. We are so thankful to them for their help.
