Help Jenny save animals in far northern Minnesota

Jennifer Wolfe has been a dedicated animal rescue person serving the northern border areas of Roseau and Warroad for 7 years. Jennifer does all this work out of her own pocket as she does not have a 501(c)(3) status. She has rescued many animals from the Roseau Pound as well as the rural community. Additionally, she has fostered animals for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and was doing rescue on the reservation before RLRR was formed.

JENNY & BENJIRecently Jennifer came to the RLRR clinic as a volunteer and I noticed her poor little crates with Duct tape and ropes for handles. When I asked about her needs she specified that she desperately needs four insulated doghouses for the dogs at the Roseau Pound, as well as some decent cat and dog crates.

BETTER CRATES NEEDED
Here are some pictures of Jenny and her 2 most recent rescues from the Roseau Pound. Had Jenny not rescued Benji and Red they would have been shot on day 5. We are so thankful to Akin Hills for vetting them and to Pet Haven for taking them in their program.

REDRLRR helps Jennifer whenever we can, just as she has helped us. If there are donations in the metro for her, we could arrange for transport at least as far as Red Lake with one of our regular transports of supplies (e-mail: blog@redlakerosie.org).

JENNIFER EXPLAINS:
The Roseau County pound in Roseau, MN, needs insulated dog/cat houses for cold outdoor temperatures.

ROSEAU IMPOUNDThese are pictures of the Roseau County Pound in Roseau, MN. The kennels are housed in the structure that is shown. There are four stalls for dogs and two cages for cats.

KENNELS AT ROSEAU IMPOUNDThe dogs and cats have protection from the wind and rain and snow which is good. However, in the winter the temperature in the kennels is the same as the outdoors and the animals have no structures provided to help maintain their body heat. In addition the kennels are not cleaned daily so moisture builds up on the bedding.

I am looking for four insulated dog houses to place inside each of the four 4x6 ft. kennels and two insulated houses for the cats.

I have been taking unclaimed dogs from the pound and finding homes for them for 7 years. I cannot go another winter thinking about them being in the cold. I am determined to do something for next winter.

I have placed about 70 dogs from the pound. They have all been good dogs with no need to be destroyed. Bullets and a gun are used at this pound.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

Girl Scout cookies go to the dogs!

A Minneapolis 5th Grade Girl Scout Troop is working hard toward earning the highest award for their age group, the Bronze Award. This award involves 20 hours of planning, working to figure out how they can make a difference in the community.

The girls decided that for one part of the award, they wanted to make pet treats for a needy shelter. They researched different recipes and organizations and picked Red Lake Rosie’s shelter animals to be the beneficiaries of their baking!

The girls have been together in this troop since they were in 1st grade. They work hard together and have lots of fun. They are so excited to be able to put a smile on a shelter dog's face with their tasty treats :-)

Troop 13250. We also got the recipe as well as greeting cards. We are so thankful for the kind thoughts, and the dogs are too!

RLRR thanks Red Lake elementary students!

On Wednesday, March 7, Carol Priest, a Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Board member went to the Red Lake Elementary School for their morning assembly to receive a donation raised by the students.

CAROL, MOLLY, AND MAUREEN (LOVE THE DOG EARS!!)Our family's Red Lake rescue dog Molly accompanied me, and was very warmly received by the kids. Molly is a collie and husky mix who was found abandoned with 2 siblings as a puppy, and is about 18 months old.

Red Lake Rosie's has become the Red Lake Elementary School students' favorite place to donate over the past few years, and this year they presented us a check for $363.14. I congratulated them on raising so much money!

Molly was the perfect "spokesdog", and greeted all the kids as they filed out of the gym to head for class. Our thanks again to the Red Lake Elementary students and organizer Michelle Stapleton for helping the animals of Red Lake!

One Red Lake dog can lead to another...

Stella, a little PomChi, was abandoned at the dump on a very cold night in February. She has now found her forever home with a family who has another Red Lake dog, Marcie, a black lab mix.

STELLA & SOPHIAStella has two other new rescue sisters, too. Sophia, looks just like Stella, and Mollie, is a beagle mix.

STELLA & MARCIEHer new Mom says, "She is settled right in and the absolute perfect addition to the family! All of her sisters love her...and she is now Marcie's favorite. They must know they share that Red Lake bond."

Schmoo!!

If you are looking for a phenomenal family dog, you have found him! Shamu is a great big loveable goof ball. He is a happy-go-lucky guy whose foster family has nicknamed Schmoo. He is about a year and a half old. He has been in his foster home for awhile and is overdue to find his forever home.

Shamu loves all people and playing with other dogs. One of the cutest things he does is carry around his favorite stuffed animals, a ladybug and headless teddy bear. He is like a clown, just always happy and goofy. Shamu loves it when the daschund who lives with him cleans his face as he lays on the floor.

His foster Mom is an excellent dog trainer, so he is beautifully obedience trained.

Shamu is overflowing with love to share. To meet him is to love him. When can he expect you?

Feral no more

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue recovered 12 puppies recently from two litters in a feral colony in Red Lake.

The life of a feral dog can be a very sad and hard life. Puppies born in feral colonies have to compete for food and have parasites that are never treated. Most never survive to live adult lives but die in misery and are often victims of violence from the older pack members.

The pups were pretty wild at first, and we had hoped we could get them socialized and adoptable, but in some cases in the past, this was not always possible.

Thankfully these were young and that was in their favor. Also the lady who lived where the feral colony had puppies fed them after they stopped nursing, so they were somewhat accustomed to people.

There was a litter of 5 and a litter of 7 in the colony. The puppies were taken to the shelter and each litter was set up in a kennel with straw, food, and water. The pups were wormed and given a parvo/distemper shot, and topical revolution for fleas. We could meet their physical and medical needs but we knew we could not meet their emotional and social needs here at the shelter.

A request went out to several rescues, and thankfully we were able to send them out to foster homes.

Only one day later we get the good news as a picture speaks 1,000 words.

Here's an update from one foster mom:

They are doing great - the little boy - we call him Dirk - is the one who will need some work, he is food aggressive, but even tonight he is doing better. The little Girl - Gracie - is just a wonderful thing and should be ready to go in a few short weeks. They both are already taking to all the animals (Sheep, Chickens, Ducks, Dogs and Cats) just fine. They know who to stay away from and who to go to for comfort.

Thank you so much for letting me take them, I hope I will get the opportunity to foster for RLRR also, you are such an incredible group, and let's face it, then you would be getting the adoption fee and that would help you out. Maybe I could do a kitten for you all or something.

Rick is more than happy to help, we did decide, that next one, we will meet you or I will come up and get them and help out for the day/night.

March 4 transport after clinic

Thanks to our faithful Red Lake Rosie's Rescue volunteers from the metro, Mike, Nate, Heidi and Barbie, 15 animals left on Sunday morning on two transports.

HUG AND A KISSMike and Nate took 4 puppies and 2 cats enroute to Twin City Pet Rescue and Karen met Barbie in Bemidji with 9 dogs and puppies enroute to All Dog, Pet Haven and MUSHR.

BARBIENATE & ASTRAHeidi headed off to Leech Lake to meet the O'Sullivans with the Bemidji Pound animals, and load up the Leech Lake Pound animals enroute to AHS.

DONATED FOODA large load of dog and cat kibble donated by Chuck and Don's with the help of DeeDee was transported by Barbie to Bemidji. RLRR animals are so happy to see the kibble as we were almost out of dog food!

CATORI & ASTRA SAY GOODBYEWe said our goodbyes to Astra and Catori who had been at the shelter for a long while. Both animals transformed from starving mangey lifeless animals to very beautiful creatures.

SILVER & SAFFIRESilver and Saffire, two semi feral puppies went to MUSHR.

SHY SIERRASierra went to Pet Haven.

MILLIEMillie the chihuahua went with Lindsay after the clinic.
