To the Victor go the spoils!

Victor was often a visitor at the Redby neuter/spay clinics sponsored by Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

He wandered into the October clinic with Vivian, a young girl in the Redby community who often volunteered at the clinics. He was happy to get food and water there.

Victor was a stray in Viv's neighborhood. He was very thin and walked with a limp. Vivian was concerned about him and asked if RLRR would take him, so we did.

Linda happened to be at the shelter when he arrived in the van, and she fell in love. He had been given another name at the clinic, but Linda wanted to give him a powerful name to help him over come the challenges he faced and his name became Victor.

He quickly learned to walk on a leash and was eager to please. He had terrible diarrhea in his first weeks with us and was treated with antibiotics.

Victor had no problems with the shelter dogs, but he was often by himself... a sweet, quiet loner. This was a dog, though, who loved the sound of a friendly voice. Just say his name and he'd give a big smile, doing what Linda calls the "whole body wag".

We all hoped for a rescue to take Victor, but heartworm and his leg injury made him a challenge to place.

When Dr. Melissa of Mn Paws visited she also fell in love with Victor. She promised to do what she could to help him and she did. The good news arrived that Victor could go to a foster home with Mn Paws on January 15th.

It just so happened that Linda and David were planning a visit so Victor rode out with them to his new life. (Linda reported that he was an angel in his crate.)

Tonight it is very cold at the shelter, but Victor is cozy and warm
in his foster home where he is already very much loved. His leg has been x-rayed, revealing a poorly healed fracture. He may or may not have surgery, but he will get the best of care from now on.

UPDATE FROM FOSTER HOME:
Hi Linda,

I just wanted to let you know Victor is doing very well here. He is my new appendage and never leaves my side.

I still have not heard from Dr. Dewoskin’s surgeon friend about his leg. He also has heartworm and I am not looking forward to that. I went through it last summer with Balto, a rescue who was adopted by my daughter.

I have taken him out to the woods and he is really happy there. I think he misses that. He does have a cozy warm bed here and friends Lady and Tobie to play with. He and lady the lab wrestle, but Tobie the Dobie is hesitant to join in (odd because he is normally playful) I think he has a respect for Victor’s stray dog scrapper side.

I love Victor and since he needs a special home, it is likely I will keep
him.

He would be tough to adopt out. I like him just fine as he is, and if he cannot have is leg fixed will be happy to help him manage his
disability.

Thanks again for bringing this loving wonderful dog to me.

David & Linda visit and transport

David and Linda visited the RLRR shelter arriving on Friday January 13 and spending THREE days helping take care of cats and dogs. The weather was cold on Friday but warmed up nicely through the weekend.

LINDAWe were busy stripping kennels and dog houses and replenishing with nice clean, dry straw for everyone.

Linda spent time with three semi-feral puppies, Starr, Silver and Saffire who had mange and were malnourished and she made good progress with them. They arrived on Wednesday with their mother, Nokomis (Grandmother) a pure white husky who has mange and sores all over her sides. This little family is tucked in and in the process of healing.

DAVIDDavid took no breaks and spent his time with cats when not busy in the shelter yard.

VICTORIt was espcially a good visit for Linda as she had hoped that Victor, a dog with bad legs, would get help. She had met Victor earlier this fall when weatherizing the kennels, and now she gets to be the one to transport Victor to a foster home with MN Paws under the direction of Dr. Melissa Doeskin. Victor will get the medical care he needs and hopes for a good home.

Three beautiful juvenile cats, Faith, Fern and Fiona went to Pet Haven foster care and Gwen a long haired tortie went to Feline Rescue.

JASMINEJasmine, a very beautiful boxer mix, who had lovely eyes and a personality to match went to All Dog foster care.

Last, but not least, Spike went on to the care of Pet Haven and will never have to suffer again.

Thank you to volunteers, tranporters, rescues that take Red Lake animals, and to all the contributors who send food, supplies, and funds to save these wonderful animals. Without all the help we get we could not do what we do.

MN PAWS: Minnesota Progressive Animal Welfare Society

MN PAWS AT FUNDRAISERRed Lake Rosie's Rescue had a pleasant visit with new friends from MN PAWS (Minnesota Progressive Animal Welfare Society), Dr. Melissa, Angela, and Stephanie. DeeDee met them at the Medina fundraiser recently and she accompanied them to the RLRR shelter on Saturday, December 3rd.

We had a busy day and the vet team immunized and wormed 13 kittens, 3 small dogs, 3 large dogs, and 7 puppies.

They also helped with the dog and cat chores and brought gifts of medicines, food, and supplies to the shelter.

When they left, they took a small long-haired chihuahua named April (now called April May) and I've already received an update from Angie:

"April May is already in a foster-to-adopt home with one of our good clients. She is such a happy little girl, and has another little chihuahua-mix brother in her foster home. I miss her...lol, I am the biggest foster failure so it's a good thing she went to her new foster home so quick. Once we get her teeth cleaned, she will be up for adoption, and I am pretty sure her new foster mom will adopt her:)"

The MN Paws Rescue group also met Victor, a lab mix dog who has a old break in his leg and he walks oddly. They are hoping to get him some orthopedic help in the future.

The Mn Paws team would like to be supportive of Red lake animals on a continual basis for which we are appreciative.

Dee Dee came to the shelter Sunday, December 4th, and took a load of animals out to Tricounty, Minnesota pitbull Rescue, Feline Rescue, and Pet Haven. Thank you, DeeDee, for all your hard work and networking for RLRR.

Victor & Veda -- 33 lbs of legs!?!

Victor, Veda & Vincent were sibling pups Carol Priest rescued from a log pile in Redby. All three went to ARVSS in Wisconsin.

UPDATE FROM VEDA'S FAMILY:
School is starting next week, so we've been busy trying to get everything arranged. One of our biggest issues, of course, is making the transition fairly smooth for Veda. We've decided that Veda and I will walk Alison to school on days when the weather cooperates.

VEDA AND HER PAL ALLYRight now, Veda has been spoiled with nightly walks at local forest preserves, prairies, marshes, you name it! Veda fits so well into our lives we can hardly believe it. Her personality is quiet yet very, very fun. She is still fairly cautious around other people, but doesn't hide, nor does her tail go between her legs. Big steps! She also has taken to training very well. She walks on her leash amazingly well for a puppy -- she can sit and stay fairly well, too.

The other day at the vet, the receptionist mentioned that Veda looks like a smooth-Haired collie. We looked it up, and what do you know, her face is very similar to that breed. Is there any chance we could see pictures of her brothers? We would be more than happy to let you send our pictures of Veda on to their owners.

I don't know if you can tell in the picture I've attached, but Veda is currently 33 pounds of legs. Her body is still very thin, but I swear her legs keep getting longer!

Chessy and her babies

Chessy was rescued by Carol Priest several weeks ago. She found her on the road with one dead pup. She wondered what might have happened to her other pups, but decided she better rescue Chessy and take her to the Red Lake Rosie shelter.

CHESSYOne day a couple of weeks later I got a call that there were 3 stray pups in a lady's yard in that same area. Tony went to the location and caught one of the pups, who I named Veda, and brought her to the shelter. She was VERY scared and went off to a foster mom in Bemidji for socialization.

VEDAThe other two hid in a woodpile and were very hungry and tick infested, but could not be caught. Carol persistently went to the woodpile every day to feed and coax the two pups. Finally, she caught them.

VICTOR AND VINCENTChessy went out on a transport May 2nd was treated for heartworm by Pet Haven---They just love her.

Her 3 pups Veda, Victor and Vincent went out on a transport 2 weeks later to ARVSS in Wisconsin.

Transport before clinic

We try to clear out the kennels at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue before a clinic, because there are always animals surrendered at the clinics and we need to make space for them. We had a nearly epic transport on May 23.

There they met Barbara Olson who transported to Dee Dee Welles who transported them to St. Francis of Assissi, Pet Projects, Animal Ark, Pet Haven, ARVSS, and RLRR Petfinder foster homes in Rogers, MN.

Fozzy Bear & Mona/Heidi

Fozzy is one of three puppies (Vince, Victor and Vernon)All Dog Rescue took in via Akin Hills. Akin Hills brought them down from RRLR to help them heal from severe mange and starvation, then asked if we could take them into foster care.
Anyhow I have Fozzy here, and my foster Tank was here when Fozzy came in, and I just thought the photos of them together were darling :) They were absolutely best friends while Tank was here - he has since been adopted. Fozzy contines to get fat and happy and lots of long walks at the off-leash dog park.
I also wanted to share a link of some beautiful photos of Heidi (formerly Mona), the RLRR dog who had hip surgery recently at Akin Hills. We are fortunate to have a professional photographer volunteer, (John K. Miller) with our group, and he went over and got some stunning photos of her. You can check them all out here if you like. He has another gallery of our dogs here - we don't have any RLRR dogs on that one, but there are some beautiful pictures!

Heidi's foster mom tells her story:

Heidi was homeless on the Red Lake Indian Reservation before she came to All Dog Rescue. She settled into her foster home, bonding quickly with her foster parents and the other resident animals. As her foster parents were marveling that she is the sweetest dog they have ever met, they were also concerned that Heidi was limping badly on her back left leg.

X-rays revealed that Heidi had severe dysplasia affecting her left hip. All Dog Rescue had two choices. The first was to permanently restrict Heidi's exercise and provide pain management. At only 2 years of age, Heidi would never be allowed to go for a run, wrestle with other dogs, or chase squirrels. The other option was to perform surgery, let Heidi recover, and then she could live a normal life. The board immediately and unanimously decided to pursue surgery.

Our vet performed a femoral head osteoectomy on Heidi's left hip on March 19. During the surgery, they discovered that the dysplasia was so severe that every time Heidi took a step, her left hip bones were grinding into each other and causing tremendous pain. Due to the grinding, her femur had fractured into several pieces.Heidi is now recovering in her foster home and is doing amazing. She makes progress every day and in a matter of weeks will have full function of her left leg. She will then begin the search for a forever home, where she will enjoy her life free of pain. She will be able to run, jump, and play - the days of limping will be over.
