Sandy & Snickers

Sandy came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue on Christmas Eve. The owner sadly said she had too many animals to feed so she gave up her cat Snickers and her dog Sandy.

Snickers left for AHS and was since adopted. Snickers was a great cat and only spent a few days at Red Lake Rosie's.  He had been neutered at our clinic previously.

Sandy went to the vet on December 26th where it was determined that she had heartworm. X-rays of her hip also indicated an old break in the femoral ball. Sandy went back and got heartworm treatment on December 30th and 31st.

Once again ARVSS (Animal Rescue and Vet Support Services) stepped up and offered to take Sandy in spite of a her health problems, but since they are located in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, ten hours away from RLRR, a lengthy transport had to be organized. 

Karen Good met Nancy O'Sullivan in Gonvick; Nancy drove to Cass Lake to meet Jenny Fitzer and the Leech Lake Legacy transport to Golden Valley. DeeDee picked Sandy up there and kept her overnight. Kristin Tanchin picked up Sandy the next day to drive her to Black River Falls, Wisconsin, to meet an ARVSS representative who drove the final leg of the journey. Thanks to all these people who help the animals get to their new start in life so regularly.

Sandy is a beautiful dog and will be looking for a home soon!

Dogs in distress: Otis & Sandy

On March 29th in the afternoon we got a call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that a dog was in distress in Red Lake, apparently had swallowed chicken bones and rib bones. Geri and Karen responded to pick up the little brindle pitbull Sandy and take her to the vet in Gonvick. Exploratory surgery was completed and she was to spend the next few days at the vet.

OTISLater that evening, we got a second call that another dog was in distress. This time it was Otis, whom we had met at the May, 2010 clinic and had seen last in October. Geri and Karen once again went to Red Lake and got Otis, who was surrendered by the owner, and took him to Gonvick late that night where the vet saw him and held him overnight for full assessment in the morning.

It had been one of those days, and we hoped that both Sandy and Otis would improve. We were very tired that night, but felt good about doing the right thing.

Otis survived and a team of very good people come together to pay his $460 vet bill. Then he was transported to Dr. Vickie in the metro for furter orthopedic and medical care and on to a foster home through a rescue there.

To our sorrow little Sandy died 3 days later in spite of the vet's efforts. Ironically, Sandy died at the vet on the same day Otis got his ride out in a new BMW.

Thank you for supporting RLRR as you are making a big difference here. The medical costs add up so quickly, we're always in need of donations, but we are so thankful that we have friends all over who are willing to help animals in distress in Red Lake, so we can respond to the needs. We are sad for Sandy, but have so much hope for Otis.

Thanks to Animal Allies in Duluth

CINDYWe had an opportunity for 10 animals to go to Duluth Animal Allies on September 1st. Animal Allies has a great program where Cindy shuttles animals from all over the area to Duluth were they offer low cost neuter/spay. They return the animals to the owner the next day in the rural communities.

FOOD AND TRANSPORTKaren met Nancy and Tom O'Sullivan and received a load of dog food sent by Barbara Olson. Cindy from Animal Allies drove all the way to Bemidji to pick up Miles, Sammy, and Sable, three adult dogs; and several litters of puppies.

SANDY & SANOMASUGAR & SHANTELLESugar and Shantelle are 2 little female shep pups that Avis Laduke rescued from the Redby dump.

LITTER OF THREEThe litter of 3 sheps came from Ponemah at the last clinic.

MILESSABLEHere is a picture of a 5 year old purebred german shep who was surrendered a the clinic. As it turned out she had heartworm and Animal Allies will be treating her!!

Transport May 2, 2010

We had a great lineup of animals at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that were transferred out to rescues on Sunday, May 2nd.

Dee Dee and Barbara came for the weekend to deliver cat cages that Barbara had made for the shelter. They arrived Friday night and helped tuck in 11 new animals that arrived that day. The weather was rainy so it was a very challenging evening to find lodging for the new animals in an already crowded shelter.

FIONAOn Saturday, Dee Dee and I found a little German shep pup we named Fiona, about 8-10 weeks old, walking along the road in McBrides Projects of Redby looking very lost and forlorn. She was loaded with fleas and was ravenously hungry.

FIONAShe came to the shelter and had a good meal, and will be leaving tommorrow for TLC rescue. She was in the right place at the right time and will get a great chance for a home. What a stroke of good luck for this girl.

Dee Dee and Barbara left with 24 dogs/pups and 2 cats. Here are pictures of some of them:
