Captain came in as a surrender on the Ponemah shuttle in summer of 2011 with Major another German Shepherd mix. Both dogs were malnourished and mangey on arrival.
Both were healed and found great homes. Thank you Pet Haven for fostering Captain and finding him these great digs.

NOTE FROM ADOPTIVE HOME: Captain was adopted by Marcia and Tim for his forever home in January 2012 after spending time in foster care. He was eager to please and craved the love of his family. Captain quickly showed how smart he was learning basic obedience and a few tricks...he gives kisses on request!
Captain's favorite pastime when not laying on the sofa with his Mom getting belly rubs, is watching squirrel TV through the back door. Captain is a very special dog. His best characteristic is the unconditional love he gives.
During the August MN SNAP clinic, we ran the Ponemah shuttle to pick up animals to be neuter/spayed. On August 22nd shuttle, 2 male shepherds were surrendered. We named them Major and Captain. Both dogs were intact, malnourished, and suffering from mange and hair loss. They soon were off to the clinic and there began a process of healing and restoration.
Major was a large-boned german shepherd, and at first was quite subdued and lethargic. He was neutered and vaccinated and began treatment with ivermectin, revolution, and lots of great food and clean water. We soon discovered a bad case of diarrhea and began a treatment for giardia as well. Major was literally a rack of bones, and looked rather hopeless, but proved once again that when given a chance the animals in the worst shape will heal and become the beautiful creatures they were meant to be. We should not let first impressions deceive us.
On arrival Major weighed in at 58 pounds. Well, needless to say Major LOVED to eat and in particular all the great food we get at the shelter. Soon the sparse hair grew in thick and shiny and Major gained at least 42 pounds. His personality shined through and he came to be know as the Gentle Giant. He was a very playful and happy guy. He had many friends at the shelter, and I personally grew to love this big boy very much.
After 4 months at the RLRR shelter, Major left on Saturday, January 7th in the backseat of Mike and Lauren's car enroute to the care of Patti at Second Hand Dogs. It was hard to let him go, but again this was only the first part of his journey.
Thank you to all our supporters and volunteers who make this new life possible for a great animal, who otherwise would be deceased today. It makes it all worthwhile.

We received a call late Sunday night on November 29 from a person who had gotten the head of their chihuahua WaWa in the car door and the eyeball was hanging out. They had no money for vet care so we made arrangements for the after hour vet to take the animal. We asked in exchange for a surrender.
CAPTAIN
WaWa, now Captain, had his left eye removed and spent the next 4 days in foster care with Lexy, the vet tech. Captain was also suffering malnutrition.
Well, as usual, Act V responded quickly. Connie and her daughter Cindy made a road trip to RLRR shelter on Saturday December 5 and took out Captain, Elbert, Lorna, Johnny, Candy, and 5 kittens.

As it turned out Shirley, sho had adopted Gracie, a RLRR small dog last year decided she may want to adopt poor little Captain, so she is going to provide him foster care to see how he and Gracie get along.
Also Elbert was reunited with Anne who is fostering him.
LORNA
Mary, foster mom from All Dog is caring for Lorna, a little shy stray found in Red Lake. Candy, a female chihuahua, is either going to All Dog or to RLRR Petfinder foster home.

Johnny who has been at the shelter since the November clinic finally got out to a foster home.
Four kittens are bound for Lauren and Mikes foster care, and Libby's lone black kitten went with Connie and is adjusting there.
As traumatic as the loss of poor little Captain's eye was, it may have saved his life, because in his physical condition he would have died if not for intervention.
