Ahnung's Celebration of Life Party!

Sunday, April 22, 2012, 2-4pm
Animal Humane Society auditorium
845 Meadow Lane
Golden Valley, Minnesota

AHNUNG AT RLRRAhnung (means star in ojibway) was rescued in October, 2008 by Karen Good at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and was later taken into Pet Haven's foster program ... she was abandoned with a litter of 8 puppies, survivor of multiple gun shots, had heartworm, coccidia and lymes and had ground her front teeth down to her gums in search of food.

Despite her rough beginnings, she has shown the world the power of forgiveness and resilience. She is a therapy dog and has touched the hearts and lives of kids, and those in hospice through her work.

She has also been my north star and walked along side of me in my health challenges. Ahnung continues to be an ambassador for her friends who are homeless (abandoned or abused).

READY FOR SURGERYLast July she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy to remove the cancer. On 4/10/12 we learned her cancer has returned. Her cancer is in a new location and cytology reports indicate a very malignant, aggressive cancer. She had surgery on Friday, 4/13 to remove the tumor and cancer.

POST-SURGERYWe've decided to have a Birthday/Celebration of Life Party! For more information:
http://ahnung-northstar.blogspot.com/2012/04/celebration-of-life-party.html

At 2:30 PM, there will be a short slideshow and presentation to share Ahnung's story and honor her incredible life ... She will be available for the entire time to give out and receive lots of hugs and kisses!

Please let us know if you will be able to join us for the party ... this is a Human only party (with the exception of Ahnung of course ;-)

Please keep Ahnung in your thoughts and prayers.

Ahnung & Legacy enjoying our Indian summer

Marilou of Pet Haven and MnPaw adopted Ahnung from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and recently fostered a sickly puppy named Legacy from Leech Lake reservation.

No one was too surprised to hear that Legacy will join Marilou's family permanently :-)

Ahnung is ill

Ahnung has been a wonderful ambassador dog for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

She also has a Facebook page to keep us up-to-date on her good works as a therapy dog and her wonderful life with Marilou from Pet Haven.

Just last week the doctors discovered that Ahnung has an aggressive form of breast cancer. She is feeling fine now, but Marilou isn't doing so well. They have an appointment with the vet oncologist on Tuesday morning.

Learn more about Ahnung & Marilou on Facebook and please offer them your support.

Volunteering at The Lab!

I got to volunteer at The Lab (of St. Paul Public Schools) yesterday with mom, Uncle Keith and my buddy Roxy, an 85 pound Bernese mountain dog!! Mom says I look like a tiny girl next to Roxy ... well, i'm only 56 pounds so no wonder I look small!! :)

Yesterday was Roxy and Uncle Keith's first time to volunteer at The Lab and I was there to 'mentor' them ... (mom tells me they really didn't need much mentoring and I agree!! They rocked!). We were asked to present to Miss M's class. Mom and I have visited them before and shared my story. At the beginning of the class Mom asked them how many remembered my story ... wow, they remember the details of my story better than I remember it! They even remembered that my name means 'star' in Ojibway!! This one student said she remembers my name has something to do with the night sky and the stars!! :) When we were there last time, mom told them how i'm her north star and asked them who their north star was and to remember that even when it's dark outside and we feel sad and alone that we can hold on tightly to our north star.

But yesterday was Roxy and Uncle Keith's day to shine!! Uncle Keith got to share about how he followed his heart and his passion and love for dogs and started his business, Pampered Pooch Playground, a doggie daycare. Roxy was so cute and did great on her first day of work!! Good job Roxy!! We've been asked to come back and meet with another class ... i'm excited to volunteer with Uncle Keith and Roxy again!

I love my job!!!

When I was walking through the hallways yesterday I got lots of love and pets from the kids. It's so cool how they all remember me ... they even remember my name and Ahnung isn't the easiest name to remember!! I had an extra special treat yesterday .... I got to see 'R' who is the first kid I got to meet at The Lab over a year ago, and it's because of him that I am volunteering at The Lab. He came out of his classroom when he saw me walk down the hall (mom says his teacher was teasing her about how we were disrupting his class!) ... he came up to me and gave me a big hug!! And you know what he said to me and his classmates, "this is my favorite dog!" Then right behind him was another student 'A' whom I met last school year during one of the dog groups ... he said "do you remember me?" I said, "of course, I remember you!" When I knew him last year he was afraid, yet intrigued, with dogs and never really came close to me to pet me or give me hugs. Well, guess what? Yesterday, he came right up to me with a big smile and gave me a gentle pat on my head and my back!! Wow!!!

I just love these kids so much!! I love how they get so excited to see me! I can't wait to go back to see them ...

How many baths does it take...?

Julius and Copper went to Pet Haven from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue after the clinic on May 28.

JULIUSPoor Julius approached me as I was hanging the clinic banner in Redby, He was SO hungry and was full of ticks, and such a sweet boy as he carefully approached me from the long grass- asking for help- and when I took him to the clinic- his whole life changed. There he met Laura and lots of other volunteers who began pulling ticks and loving him.

Thank you to all who helped Julius!! Karen

COPPERCOMMENTS FROM LAURA:
I loved being at the clinic. Seeing the people bringing in their animals was encouraging. You are doing wonders in the community.

COPPER & JULIUSJulius loves Copper. It is like they are hanging together because they are from the same hood. I already have a foster for Copper. And the vet tech at our clinic is thinking about fostering/adopting Julius.

Cannot wait for Marilou to meet Julius. He looks so much like her Red Lake dog, Ahnung. Julius is about 1 1/2 so he could be one of her kids. Everyone that knows Ahnung says how much he looks like her. I have not said anything to Marilou. I want to see what she thinks.

Laura

JULIUS & LAURAFROM LAURA'S BLOG:
Dudley taught Julius how to play. Julius just came down from the Red Lake reservation covered in ticks and wounds from previous fights. Dudley helped him settle into the good life and there are toys are all over the living room to prove it.

Julius is such a loving boy despite the life he has led so far. He has charmed his way into the heart of a vet tech at Bloomington Vet. I have fallen for this guy too. Some dogs just grab your heart out of nowhere. Julius is one of those dogs.

COPPERCopper is another Red Lake dog that just arrived with Julius over the weekend. He already has a family interested in adopting him. He is a gorgeous golden mix in definite need of a good grooming. How many baths does it take to get a Red Lake dog clean?

FROM PET HAVEN DOG BLOG:
Julius is Pet Haven's most recent intake. He arrived less than a week ago, along with Copper from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. We have a ten day hold on all of our new dogs before we place them up for adoption (we want to make sure they are in good health!).

Well ... Copper tagged along to the adoption event this past Saturday and was a big hit. He's already got someone interested in him. Julius ALSO was a big hit and a vet tech from one of Pet Haven's veterinary partners has fallen head over heels in love with this boy.

JULIUSJulius is about a year and a half years old and was rescued by Karen of Red Lake ... he was covered with scars and scabs from old injuries and 200+ wood ticks! Everyone who has had the chance to meet him falls in love with his kind, gentle, wise spirit. He was given the nickname of "son of Ahnung" at the vet clinic.

In October, 2008 I had the good fortune of making my first trip up to Red Lake and met and fell in love with Ahnung [Ahnung is now a therapy dog working with at-risk youth and in hospice]. Julius has the same markings of Ahnung (pronounced ah-NUNG and means star in ojibway) .... and also has the same temperament .... who knows if Julius is truly Ahnung's son, but if he is I can personally vouch for the incredible spirit he inherited from his possible mama :)

There's a pretty good chance that Julius already has an adoptive home ... but if your heart is captured by Julius let us know ... there are probably other Julius' running around up north waiting to be rescued. Email us at dogs@pethavenmn.org.

Marilou

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO OF Ahnung and Julius

MORE FROM MARILOU OF PETHAVEN:
I am even more convinced now that Julius is Ahnung's son :) They are so alike and they hit it off so well :) Julius even got Ahnung to play and gave her a kiss ;-)

I went with Laura to drop Julius off at his new foster (and potential adopter), Dave ... Dave is a vet tech at Bloomington Vet.

He fell in love with Ahnung back in fall, 2008 and said if there was ever another dog that was like Ahnung he would want to adopt the dog.

Well, Julius came along and now he's ready!! :) Assuming all goes well with the other dogs in the household (Grizzly and Alan) he plans to adopt Julius. I have a strong feeling it will all work out.

Of course, I put my plug in for Julius also becoming a therapy dog as I would love for Ahnung and Julius to go and "work" together at schools .... they could be the Red Lake Rosie's therapy dog team!!
:)

Ahnung has qualified as a hospice volunteer.

UPDATE FROM MARILOU OF PET HAVEN ABOUT HER RED LAKE DOG AHNUNG:
Okay ... so i'm a proud mama ... how can I not be?? :)
Ahnung is featured in Allina Hospice's April volunteer newsletter ...
she loved going with me to our last day of hospice training on friday
and having her photo taken for her badge.

Read all about it on Ahnung's blog:

Official Allina hospice volunteer!
Mom just completed 3 days of training through Allina Home and Community Services. She said it was the best training and she learned so much!! Way to go mom for making it through the training ... and today, on the last day, I got to go with her because they needed to take my picture for my own badge. How cool is that?? :) And on top of it all I got lots and lots of hugs from all the other volunteers and Allina staff.

Mom was really proud of me. She kept telling me how good I was ... not sure what the big deal is. Aren't I always good??? Anyway, I slept most of the time right by her side. Occasionally the other volunteers came by to say hi and gave me pats and hugs and I also got some belly rubs ... nice long belly rubs! I showed them that I know how to shake and "high five" ...

so mom graduated from the training today and we both got our badges!! We also got our first assignment and I'm really excited about it. Mom is going to call the family first thing next week and set up a time when we can start visiting ... i'm going to have a new friend now ... this is exciting!!

Here are some photos from today ... if you're a therapy dog or know someone who's a therapy dog i hope you'll also consider volunteering with hospice. Yes, you can email me at ahnung.star@gmail.com.

and if you want to learn more about the hospice training from mom's perspective, she wrote about it on her blog.

Free Therapy Dog informational session

Event: Free Therapy Dog informational Session
Date: Saturday, 4/17
Time: 10 - 11 AM
Location: Pampered Pooch Playground, St. Louis Park

Love your dog? Think your dog has something special to share? Want to learn more about what it takes for you and your dog to become an animal therapy team?

Marilou Chanrasmi (president of Pet Haven) and her pet partner Ahnung are an active animal therapy team and will be hosting a free therapy dog informational session at Pampered Pooch Playground.

Ahnung (pronounced ah-NUNG and means "star" in ojibway) is a rescued dog from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and a registered therapy dog and is leaving paw prints in the hearts of youth at schools where she volunteers with her mom. In a couple months she will also begin volunteering at hospice.

Ahnung's dream is to start a movement in Minnesota of animal therapy teams and to inspire others to go through the necessary training to become registered animal therapy teams. Ahnung is loving her "job" as a therapy dog and wants to let you know why you and your dog should consider it too!

What you will learn:
What makes a great therapy dog?
What kind of training is involved and how long will it take?
What are the requirements for the dog? and for the handler?

Ahnung's life as a therapy dog

FROM AHNUNG'S BLOG:

The life of a therapy dog

The day before I "work" (note from Marilou: Ahnung volunteers as a therapy dog working with at-risk youth at The Lab, a program serving St. Paul Public schools), mom often takes me to Pampered Pooch Playground to see auntie Jenny for Spa Day ... ahhh, yes, a bath, massage, pedicure, blow dry and even some playtime with the other pooches.

They love me so much at Pampered Pooch that I get to roam around and I even get to be a greeter at the front door as my puppy friends get dropped off for daycare. Auntie Jenny let mom come back so she could take some photos and a movie clip of me getting my bath :)

I just LOVE getting a bath and auntie Jenny told mom that I am the best and the easiest dog to bathe and groom ... I can't understand why anyone wouldn't love it. Mom tells me it's important for me as a therapy dog to make sure that I am well groomed before I go to work volunteering with the kids. When I smell good and feel soft I get even more hugs.

Here I am after spa day giving my auntie Jenny a 'high five' to let her know I really appreciate her working on a Sunday so that I can be ready for work this morning. I got to hang out in the front and roam around the offices while waiting for auntie Laura who was coming so that I could try on my new therapy dog vest that she's making for me (thanks auntie Laura! you're the coolest!). I look so sharp in my bright orange vest and it's so comfy!! :) She's going to sew the letters onto my vest now and make a couple adjustments. When she's done I'll be able to go to work in style!!

This morning I get to go to The Lab and work with these awesome kids!! We're on week 4 of the "dog group". Our lesson plan for today is going to be "Go to your place" where mom and auntie Danielle will show the kids how Sharpie and I will go to our place (which is rug) and how they can teach that to us. It's important for these kids who can often get overwhelmed and not have a healthy outlet to know that there is a place they can go that will be a safe and happy place for them.

When I work I get these delicious treats. I've noticed that mom gives me a smaller portion for breakfast on days that I work because she knows i'm going to get lots of treats.

If you want to watch a couple short movie clips of me at Spa Day, check out the original post.

On the first one you'll see auntie Jenny showing off to mom that I'm so good about even getting my head wet. Then on the second one i'm just soaking in the massage!

Can't wait for when I get to go back again!

Canine Inspired Change

NOTE TO KAREN FROM MARILOU OF PET HAVEN:
Hi Karen,

I just wanted to let you know that we got $241 in cash/check donations for RLRR from yesterday's informational session for Canine Inspired Change with Canine Coach. We also got food/treats.

We had a huge turnout for the event with close to 60 people in attendance. There's a lot of interest in our community for people wanting to learn how they can partner with their dogs and become Pet Partner animal therapy teams .... and then go out into our community.

The healing, transformative energy of animals is truly amazing.

A special thanks also to Canine Coach for supporting donations to RLRR in lieu of a fee and for Danielle (of Canine Coach) for launching the Canine Inspired Change program at Canine Coach. Ahnung is truly a proud member of Team CIC (Canine Inspired Change).

Hugs to you Karen and thanks so much for all you do!!

Love,
Marilou & Ahnung

Ahnung continues work with at-risk youth

NOTE FROM MARILOU OF PET HAVEN:
Hi Karen,

here are a few shots of Ahnung from her volunteer work with at-risk youth at The Lab (www.thelabspps.com) today ... she is doing such amazing work with them! It's absolutely incredible to see them come out of their shells.

There's this one kid who has really bonded with her and when he was taking her for a short walk you could just feel the bond between them ... and i loved the moment the kid looked over at Ahnung who had her eyes fixated on him and he said, "Ahnung, you okay??"

Ahnung will be a registered therapy dog in early December ...
i am so proud of her! :)

Thanks again for rescuing her and for letting her come home with me
;-)

love,
Marilou & Ahnung

Ahnung's plea

FROM AHNUNG THE RED LAKE DOG'S BLOG:

Help my friends ... please?

As many of you know ... the only reason I am still alive and I am still here to enjoy life is because of Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. I was dumped along with my litter of 8 pups last fall, and if she hadn't taken me in I would've continued wandering around trying to survive. Check out my first blog entry and you can watch a video of my story (keep a box of kleenex handy!).

IONEAnyway, Karen needs your help now and so do my friends up north. She recently took in 22 dogs and is in desperate need of fosters and rescues to help. The cute shepherd pup above is Ione. Here's what they have to say about this sweet pup: "found wandering alone - Karen G. says she is about 10-14wks old. Says she is pretty scared. NEEDS socialization. This takes work but it can be accomplished. She was caught by a volunteer so she has hope in her future. She is a gorgeous little shep cross. This puppy would need to go EVERYWHERE with you and LOTS and LOTS of TLC and treats. :) Maybe a fenced in yard due to the potential to run."

I also asked my Human to put together a video of photos she took on 3 separate trips she made up to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue last fall. Her first trip was in October (when she met me ... there are photos of me ... my glamour shots when I was still nursing my pups!). She then went back in November so she could bring me back. I had heartworm and was still nursing my pups so she couldn't bring me in October. Then in December we went back together so we could visit Karen and my friends ... AND we helped in transporting 18 dogs/pups/kittens back to the Twin Cities.

Check out the video ... and if you are willing to consider fostering my Human says you can foster through Pet Haven (the rescue that took me in) ... all you need to do is provide a loving home [all expenses are covered by Pet Haven].

It's going to start getting cold up north soon ... so please help my friends up north before winter comes.

love,
ahnung

Ahnung seeks help for his friends at The Lab

FROM AHNUNG'S BLOG:
This past school year I began volunteering at The Lab and began working with "R" (that's us looking into each other's eyes ;-) The Lab is a program of St. Paul Public Schools and serves at-risk youth to discover, understand and share their voices through creative and experiential opportunities. Sometimes humans have been hurt so much that it's hard for them to trust -- that's what I've learned about all of these great kids, and in particular "R".
"R" and I got teamed up and I got to hang out with him every week. I remember the first time we met ... I could tell he liked me (and I liked him too!) but he really wasn't sure what to do with me. As weeks passed (and there were days when all we would do is hang out together while he played word games with my Human) I could feel his heart opening up ... I think my heart also started to open up to. Every Tuesday morning my Human and I would wait for "R" to arrive at The Lab. He would arrive in a St. Paul yellow cab with a couple other kids, escorted by an adult.

As our bond grew, and weeks passed, "R" would dart out of the cab and run into the building to meet me. I would wait for him to walk through the door. I love to see the big smile on his face and how he would get down on his knees and give me a big bear hug. The first time the other kids met me, "R" said "This is my dog, AH-NUNG" and he hugged me for the tenth time. My pal "R" -- he can hug me a hundred times and that wouldn't even be enough.
The Lab is a really cool place because they have programs where dogs can participate. Me, i'm pretty mellow, and rather than the dog obedience stuff, I like to work 1:1 with kids like "R" ... for me, it's about relationships and connecting and simply hanging out. Like "R" i went through so much before I was rescued by Karen of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue (heartworm, lymes disease, gun shot, starvation - and I have no front teeth to prove it! You name it, i'm a survivor!)

Anyway, I need your help now ... The Lab has been nominated for a $10,000 grant - a grant called "Grant for Change" and supports artists, activists, and athletes doing good in the world. The recipient is based on votes. The Lab NEEDS your vote, and it needs to be done by 8/31, so no procratinating my friends ;-) Together, we can make a difference in the lives of more "R's" in this world ...

To vote, visit the Nau Grant for Change site.

And spread the word!

Hugs from "R" and slobbery kisses from me (ahnung)

Ahnung catches blogging bug

Ahnung is a Red Lake dog rescued by RLRR transferred to Pet Haven and now the much-loved companion of Pet Haven's president, Marilou.Ahnung was getting so much coverage in the RLRR blog, Pet Haven's dog blog and Marilou's personal blog, that she decided it was time for a blog of her own.

Check it out: Ahnung ... living life The Stray Dog Way.

Happy Valentine's greetings for RLRR

I told you recently how Ahnung, the former Red Lake Rosie's Rescue dog, has been volunteering with Pet Haven at The Lab - a program of the St. Paul Public schools. The week before Valentines, Ahnung brought a couple Pet Haven volunteers with her to assist in an art project where kids made Valentine's cards for Karen to let her know how much they appreciated the work she does on behalf of the animals. That morning, Ahnung also pushed her "mom" aside, got on the computer, and wrote a poem for the kids and gave everyone their own special copy. One of the young boys in the group said, "we should send Ahnung's poem to Karen too" -- so we did.
Ahnung hung out (and took a couple naps ;-) as the kids collaged and had fun making Valentine cards for a woman who has dedicated her life to helping abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats up at Red Lake.

At the end of the class period, each kid proudly turned in their work of art, smiled and on their way out of the room, got down on the floor to give Ahnung a hug and went off to eat lunch!

Happy Valentines Day to all from Ahnung and the youth of The Lab!

Ahnung helps "at-risk" youth

EXCERT FROM MARILOU'S BLOG:
Ahnung - our north star

“So is Ahnung your dog too?”, asks one of the kids.

“Yes. She wasn’t planned. I met her in October 2008 at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue on the west boundary of Red Lake reservation. She was abandoned with her litter of eight puppies. I remember seeing her in her outdoor kennel, metal bars criss-crossed in front of her face as I pointed my camera towards her. She was nursing her puppies and her nipples were full and almost touching the ground. She looked worn down and haggard. She weighed almost 70 pounds – a solid black dog with unique white markings: one white front paw, patches of white on her face, a white chest and a black tail with a white tip, as if someone had dipped her tail in white paint. Her tail has a curl of a husky. Her face and body type are bull doggish and pit bull-like. Her wrinkles and heavy coat scream shar pei.So why this one dog? There were many other dogs in the shelter – in their outdoor kennels and others running around. There was something about her eyes – was it sadness, was it wisdom, was it acceptance? There was something about the way she looked at me, something about the way her piercing eyes looked right through me. She has a story. She has a purpose. That “something” brought me back one month later to bring her into Pet Haven’s foster program. She arrived testing positive for heartworm, lymes disease and coccidia. We soon learn she has a pellet in one of her nipples, having survived a gunshot wound. She has no front teeth as she has ground it all down which, according to our vet, is probably her attempt to escape from a metal cage. Her rescuer, Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue says many of the pups she rescues have ground down teeth as they struggle to find food and eat dirt and gravel in search of food. Whatever the case, Ahnung’s first 4 years were hard and full of struggles. Her body holds the scars of her past. Her spirit only knows how to live in the present moment.

Ahnung’s rescuer Karen initially gave her a temporary name of “Mama”. Aware of the bond that had formed, she asked me to name her. I chose “Ahnung” because I wanted something to represent and honor her roots and the hope she embodies. Ahnung means “star” in ojibway, the language of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. My partner and I officially adopted Ahnung on January 3rd, 2009. She is my north star. She is hope in the midst of darkness. Her calm, confident and wise presence provides guidance when life seems unbearable. She is reminder of how goodness prevails in the end.As I look at a room of seven kids intent on hearing my story and Ahnung’s story I realize that the light shining from Ahnung’s star is so much brighter than I even imagined. These kids are deemed “at-risk”. Pet Haven (with Ahnung as the ambassador) is partnering with a program called The Lab of the St. Paul Public schools where youth are inspired, encouraged and empowered to discover, understand and share their voices and the truth of their lives. These kids, like Ahnung, have been tossed aside. I look out at the room and I see one of the kids on the floor next to Ahnung petting her and rubbing her belly. He smiles, “man … this dog is loved. I can tell this dog is loved.” I later learn that this young kid had not been engaged in class for the past week and for the first time came alive in class. I would never have known.

We need to build bridges to our youth. We need a kind, gentle and compassionate way to chisel away at walls built over years of abuse or neglect. I believe animals can be that bridge. In mid October when I first laid eyes on Ahnung little did I know she would be instrumental in lighting up the night skies for urban at-risk youth with the brilliance of her star. Her work is just beginning as she heals wounded spirits and gives hope to so many. I tell these kids, when something bad happens and something hurts so badly, I want them to close their eyes and imagine Ahnung. She is the north star for all of us. I want them to hold onto her tightly and trust that she will guide them out of the darkness back into the light. I want them to feel Ahnung’s calm and loving presence. And I want them to know they are not alone.

The young boy grins again and says “man … this dog is loved. This dog is really loved.”

Ahnung's story in pictures

Marilou from Pet Haven has adopted Ahnung from Red Lake and shared this video on her blog about their story thus far.

Update on Ahnung:
so I just got home from taking ahnung to Lake Harriet vet .... first of all, she's in great health with a few interesting findings! :)

- while Dr. Jim was checking ahnung out he noticed a bump on one of her nipples (i assume most of you know that ahnung had a litter of 8 pups when she was abandoned). At first he thought it might be a cyst and to keep an eye on it... he kept checking it and feeling it and a few minutes later exclaims "it's a pellet!!" Apparently Ahnung had been shot at .... fortunately it skimmed her body and just got her nipple. He said it's not hurting her right now so we can leave it there until she goes under for dental cleaning and then he can remove the pellet. Some of you know that the dog we lost in July 2007, Shadow had also been shot. I rescued him from the country roads of Owasso, OK -- he was in horrible condition. I later find out from x-rays taken that he has lead in his skull -- a bullet skimmed his ear then shattered. I guess ahnung is carrying part of shadow's spirit with her as well :)

- ahnung has no front teeth!! :) i noticed that about a week ago... apparently she has been chewing and grinding her teeth (probably an effort to get out from wherever she was being confined). I hate to imagine her life before she ended up at Red Lake Rosie's. she has no front teeth at all and her back teeth have also been worn down! Dr. Jim said it's not a major concern but we'll have to watch for teeth cracking :) He said she's had a rough start to life ... he's guessing she's around 3-4 years old. All I can say is that thank god she lucked out and found her way to karen up at Red Lake!

- ahnung has a luxating patella in her back right leg. i haven't noticed her limping but it's something i'll have to watch for ... if it gets worse she could tear her ACL (and she could be like me and go through ACL surgery!! ;-) and will need surgery ... we'll hope not though :)

other than that my sweet girl is in perfect health ... her heart and lungs sound great and they wanted to know if they could keep her at the clinic!!! I said take a number and stand in line --- she's all mine!! ;-)

Rest assured... ahnung's rough days are all behind her... she has 3 LL Bean beds now with her name on it .... she gets the run of the house when she's left at home ... she sleeps wherever the heck she wants to .... and she spends most of her days either with me while i work from home or at coffee shops, or with Mary at her office doing outreach with at-risk youth! she's learning to sit for treats (we'll start working on the downs and the stays soon ;-)

oh... one my last thing... she now weighs 58 lbs ... when she came she was 68 lbs ... she's a svelte 58 pounds and feeling good!! ;-)

signed,

Pet Haven adoptions of Red Lake dogs!

Pet Haven had several adoptions on Monday, January 5, 2009 including three Red Lake dogs. Here are the highlights from the Pet Haven dog blog:

Rae Ann, a hound mix, has found her new home with a Min Pin sibling and two boys of her very own. Everyone who met Rae Ann fell in love with this gentle girl and we are very excited for her. Congratulations, Rae Ann!

Ahnung was adopted this weekend by Marilou, President of Pet Haven. We have all enjoyed ribbing Marilou for "foster failing" (adopting your own foster dog) for the third time (she has only "fostered" three dogs). Ahnung is a lucky girl and we are glad that she is "staying in the Pet Haven family" and we will all get to see a lot more of her.

Gale, a female mixed breed from Rosie's Red Lake Rescue, never even made it onto our website. While out walking with her foster mom last week she met some neighbors who fell in love with this little girl. She now has a Boxer brother and a mom who works from home. She has come a long way from being abandoned in northern Minnesota with a litter of puppies!
