UPDATE FROM ACT V ADOPTER:
Tis the day for beautiful updates!
Who could forget "Elizabeth" whose forever name is "Bit"?
She arrived in November 2014 after being plucked from the depths of the dumpster.
Her album is a must-see because her transformation has been amazing.

Paxton celebrates his 5-year "Gotcha" anniversary

I got this amazing update on Paxton (aka PacMan), a dog that came to a Red Lake Rosie's Rescue clinic 5 years ago on his own and turned himself in for rescue! He was very hungry and just got in the crate in one of the communities. Heidi and Linda fell in love with this big boy. He spend some time at the RLRR shelter after he was neutered and vetted, regaining his health. This very large dog turned out to be a big marshmallow and went to a Animal Ark in the Twin Cities and was adopted. It is so great to get these updates years later!

Karen and RLRR

Hello Karen,

Here are a few photos of Pac's 2015.

1. Here he is enjoying belly scratches from my nieces. I takes two to cover his big belly. LOL

2. Pac with our 5 year old granddaughter. They just finished their walk around the yard.

3. Pac the life of the party on the 4th of July (see first photo above)

4. His favorite spot...in bed with his bone close by.??

Paxton is the most loving sweet boy! Thank you for rescuing him.

Sincerely,
K~ & J~

Nemo gets his wheels!

We were so happy to see the brown UPS truck winding down the road to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue yesterday evening. Nemo’s wheels were here!

Nemo, the Chihuahua mix, had come to RLRR near death from trying to survive outdoors in the cold, he had suffered malnourishment and had a severe injury to his rear legs. His body temperature was dropping and we feared he was going to die.

Fortunately, he lived through a surgery to remove a large beef bone from his stomach and came to the shelter where he started to trust Jenny who was working at the shelter. However, his rear legs were both paralyzed on arrival. Soon one began to work, but he needed support, so we ordered a specially made cart for him.

JENNY & NEMO
He even went outside- and ran around too in the snow!  He is so happy with his wheels!!

Now it is time for Nemo to move on. He has been accepted in a new program. Second Hand Hounds has a Special Cases Unit overseen by Coordinator Sara Anderson. The program will help animals that are injured, dogs with disabilities, and dogs that are emotionally shut down. Nemo will be among the first to participate in the program. Nemo will leave on transport Sunday February 21st to a new life and adventure.

DOESN'T HE LOOK PROUD!
Thank you SHH, Jenny, Dr. Burgess and Dr. Marie of Cornerstone Vet, and the transporters who helped Nemo on his journey. Thank you also to Red Lake Rosie’s supporters who made it possible to pay the medical costs and for the special wheels for Nemo.

Nemo comes to RLRR

One cold day in January, a call came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that there were two small dogs that needed help. We met halfway in Redby and found two white and black small breed Chihuahua mixes. One we called Jo Jo and one we called Nemo.

Jo Jo and Nemo were very frightened and their little backbones and hip bones protruded showing the result of malnourishment. The driver said the little dogs lived outside and it was hard to imagine how they had survived until mid-January in the brutal cold of winter in northern Minnesota.

Nemo was not only malnourished, but lay in the kennel with spasms in his side. He had also been injured from a dog attack they reported. Nemo’s body temperature was dropping and we feared he would die. Nancy and Karen sped off to the vet to leave Nemo in the care of the Cornerstone Veterinary clinic. They immediately put him on warm packs to raise his body temperature.

Later that day, we got a report that X-rays showed something in the stomach. Nemo had exploratory surgery and a large beef bone was removed.

Nemo started to respond, but his rear legs would not work. No bones were broken, and no puncture wounds indicated an animal attack. We suspected some blunt force had caused the injury.

After being at the vet for several days, Nemo came to the RLRR shelter where he convalesces indoors with hopes he will regain use of his rear legs.

Nemo is frightened of people and takes a while to gain trust that we are not going to hurt him. Although he is still frightened of loud sounds and unfamiliar people, he trusts Jenny and gives her kisses.

Jenny is staying at the shelter for a period of time and has gained his trust and also has begun to do therapy with some wheels her daughter Zoey built for Nemo. He is starting to use one leg, but the other leg is not yet in use.

After Nemo survived the insurmountable odds of living outdoors, not having enough food, and now the injury to his legs, we feel that he deserves a chance for a better life. He weighs just 8 pounds 13 oz.

RLRR has ordered a professionally made set of wheels which we are hoping will help Nemo walk. We will keep you updated on his progress.

Update on survivor Uno, now Axel

Don't let this crabby face fool you, this pup is very happy now!

It was only a year ago when Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took in Uno, the tiny sole survivor of a litter of 10 after their mother was hit by a car and killed. It was a miracle that he survived; he was less than a pound when he came to us.

Jean of Carver Scott took Uno and nursed him back to health. He has been adopted and is now over l year old and a large dog. His new name is Axel.

We get many requests for updates on Uno and others. He is a healthy and happy pet loved by his family. Jean recently saw him at her vet clinic and snapped a picture of him.

Thank you all for his healing and great life today.

Happy Valentine's Day from Nanook!

Nanook arrive at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue December 10th. He was surrendered because his legs were crooked. He had rickets which we see often in puppies that suffer malnourishment prenatally and postnatally. Nanook was a lovely husky shep puppy and we were hopeful that good nutrition would straighten out his legs in time as it had many times before.

Susie of ARVSS (Animal Rescue and Veterinary Support Services of Stoughton, WI) took Nanook into her program and soon he was healing and thriving. Nanook was neutered and adopted to a wonderful family who loves him very much!

On Valentine’s Day, he received his diploma of “Puppy Education” with a very happy family giving him the love and support he needs to succeed. His name has been changed to Wallee. He no longer is alone, but has everything he needs- Look at that happy face!

We are so thankful to ARVSS and many rescues that take the Red Lake animals and get them great homes. Also to our transporters, food providers, and financial supporters who make it possible to save needy animals like Nanook every day here at Red Lake.

Sincerely, Karen and RLRR

RLRR Beginnings: Transports

Transports in 2005 were done with a pickup truck and a trailer.

The first large transport in February 2005 with 59 animals was done with the help of Lynn Mecum and Kevin Wolden. A rescue in Wisconsin that had been at our RAVS clinic had promised to take the animals, however, at the last minute, they could not. We were devastated. We had plans to move the animals out as many were suffering, so we had to make a huge plea to metro area to help us, and they did.

It was subzero and the threesome traveled through the Red Lake Reservation from Ponemah all the way to Bigstone picking up the animals. School had been cancelled due to the very cold wind chill temperatures of 40 degrees below zero, but despite the weather, we picked up 59 animals. One shepherd from Ponemah gave birth to 9 puppies in the process!

The next day they were transported to Tri-county Humane Society in St. Cloud, MN, where we were met by many rescues from the metro area. We did not lose one animal, which was a miracle in itself. That was our first contact with many of the metro rescues. After that transport, future challenges would pale in comparison.

Later in 2006, we received the gift of a 1992 Ford Econoline cargo van from St. Francis of Assisi which was presented to us by our friend Joan Lawson. What a marvelous gift that was!!

RLRR Beginnings: Helping a hoarder situation

One of the first learning sessions was cleaning out a hoarder on the White Earth Reservation. The first step was to confiscate his sign he had posted at his driveway. The place was a nightmare.

He had over 40 puppies and dogs and no food nor supplies. He claimed to have buried 75 dogs and puppies from parvo in his back field. It turned out however; the puppies we took were suffering from dehydration, malnourishment, and coccidia. The adult animals were fighting for food and breeding rights as all animals in the group were intact.

All the animals were removed in a process that took 6 weeks. The man kept 6 animals which Red Lake Rosie had neutered and spayed.

Joan Lawson paid for the vet bill. That was the most challenging of all experiences; after that, other challenges would pale in comparison. The man who owned them was the only help available to do this.
