Transports
A load of goodies came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue the first weekend in March.
Eric of The Shed sent a load with John. Tom met John in Motley and brought the load
with Nancy. Also in the load was kitty litter from
AHS. Altogether about 4000 lbs!
The very next day, lots of "well fed, somewhat chunky dogs" left after feasting at RLRR!!
Karen :)
Ok, here is a photo of the Motley Crew in Motley, MN.

Porch puppies and their angel mom
On Thursday, March 7th, quite late at night, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue got a call
that a dog was on the porch of the community Center in Ponemah and had a litter
of puppies newborn with no shelter. The next morning we sent a local helper, Earl over to
rescue the mama and her litter- however, he was unsuccessful. The owner decided that she did not want to
surrender the mama and litter.
Well, we found her, and named her Nodin, which means "Wind" in our language. There she laid on top of her puppies as a mix of rain and snow drenched them. We noticed that her ribs protruded and that her left eye was dead and appeared to be poked out.
Polly and I rejoiced as we traveled back knowing that the
trip paid off. Now Nodin and her little litter of 5 would be tucked in dry
and warm surroundings with all the food and water she needs to support the
production of the milk critical to the pups survival. The pictures were taken
once she arrived at the shelter with nice dry straw and fleece blankets
provided by Susan.
Sincerely, Karen and Polly
Again, on Friday, March 8th, quite late at night, another
call came to RLRR and said the mama was still laying in the doorway porch with
her babies. Needless to say I did not sleep well that night, and
bright and early at 6am, I got in touch with Polly, my lucky charm, and we went
to Ponemah on the 130 mile trip in search of the dog and her little
family. The roads were not good and we
hoped to make the trip safely.
Well, we found her, and named her Nodin, which means "Wind" in our language. There she laid on top of her puppies as a mix of rain and snow drenched them. We noticed that her ribs protruded and that her left eye was dead and appeared to be poked out.
Fortunately, because she was so hungry, a nice bowl of
food placed in a plastic crate was all the temptation that she needed to enter, and then we
put the 5 surviving pups in with her, and found 2 deceased pups
laying there as well.
Thank you all for supporting Red Lake Rosie's and enabling us to make these life saving rescues!

Sora is training her nose!
Sora (formerly known as Crimson) was one of 3 very fuzzy pups that came down from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue about two years ago and were fostered by Linda R. -- Sora is now up to 85 lbs!
NOTE FROM ADOPTER:
After about a year in nosework classes, and
transitioning to her first odor (sweet birch), in the fall, Sora passed her
Odor Recognition Test, as sanctioned by the National Association of
Canine Scentwork.
This is her booklet where her ORT test and score is recorded.
This is a video of her mock ORT run on 1/27, which
gives you an
idea of how it works. The gist: 12 identical boxes, one box has 3 q-tips,
Sora has to find that box, and tell me that she
found it, and I have to tell the judge by saying Alert! when I think
she's got it.
Sora is still in training, and hopefully come fall we will
try an NW1 (nosework 1) trial. She really loves this 'game' she gets to
play with that over-active nose of hers :). Though it would be a dream,
there is an award for the best performing rescue dog at an NW1 trial, and
maybe, just maybe, she'll get a Harry Award someday. :)

Rest in Peace, Elly May
Sad
news about our Elly May Clampett, (aka MayMay, EllaBelle, Girl, Baby Girl,
Elle), she crossed over the Rainbow Bridge Feb. 9th. Some will remember her as
the young mother dog who someone threw hot grease on and burned her back about
7 years ago. Please see her previous blog post.
Though we only had a short time with her she was easily one of the best dogs we ever had and certainly the sweetest! A tumor had developed in her head and, as we opted for 'quality of life', she remained our steadfast and loyal pet for 13 months after her first symptoms.
I knew that when she didn't want to help with chores any longer she would be ready to leave this realm. We had made an appt. to have her put down as her pain was so great even at the highest dose the vet would give her. That morning was the first time she ever refused to go to the barn.
She was much loved by our grandkids especially Junior, who took her to obedience training for 4H and also taught her a few other things. Her loving boyfriend Buck, the Blue Heeler , was very sad as she had rejected him a few weeks before, I think it hurt too much to have him bump her unexpectedly.
We have her ashes in a prominent place and will spread them over the flower bed that she so faithfully supervised the care of. She will forever be missed...and our newly adopted pup has some very big paws to try to fill.
We are so grateful that you were willing and able to save her life, she was so worth it! I have made another 25 bamboo dishcloths for this years booth at the TC Pet Expo, I hope you do well there!

Jambi (now Fritz) in rehab
Jambi came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue starved to just 3-4 lbs and with a crippling bone infection in his front leg. Act V took him in and managed to get the leg to heal without an amputation and then he was adopted by Lauren's mom. See his earlier blog post here.
Now known as Fritz, he is getting additional rehabilitation with water therapy at the U of MN. I'm not sure if he likes it, but I'm sure it is good for him and he gets extra love afterwards :-)

Update on transports
Red Lake Rosie's is so happy to have a network of friends
who help with the transport of many cats and dogs to the metro area.
Heidi Hunstad has volunteered to be our transport
coordinator and is doing very well.
Tom and Nancy O'Sullivan recently purchased a Chevy
Express Cargo Van to use for transporting animals, food, and supplies for Red
Lake Rosie's, Leech Lake Legacy, Roseau Pound and Bemidji Pound.
RUBY TUESDAY
We also want to thank volunteers Jenny, Teri, Kristin,
Dee Dee, John, Nancy, Lauren and Mike and others who help the animals along their way.
CHEWY
We have had the opportunity to place and transport
animals out weekly which is very important in the harsh winter months.
We also are thankful to the many rescues who are stepping
up to take animals regularly.

RLRR receives Kindness from Red Lake Elementary Schools
As a part of Kindness week, Michelle, a teacher at the
Red Lake Elementary Schools coordinates a fundraiser for their favorite
charity, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. They
have done this for 3 years.
I was told one of the classes that collected the most was
our kindergarten. Karen, Reilly, and several other animals are invited to
visit the classes soon.
Thank you to Red Lake Elementary students, teachers, and
parents.
They are our largest tribal supporters- "And
a child shall lead them".Karen

Lovely Lily
Lily is the third of the foster pups from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue cared for by Linda that recently found great homes.
NOTE FROM LINDA:
Lily went to a nurse who has owned many dogs who lived to an old age. She has an adult daughter who lives close by who will also be involved with Lily's upbringing and already has plans to have her out for runs on many dog trails and around lakes!
Lily was all curled up by the daughter when I left.
UPDATE FROM LILY'S NEW HOME:
Hi Linda,

Lily was all curled up by the daughter when I left.
UPDATE FROM LILY'S NEW HOME:
Hi Linda,
Thank you for
bringing Lily to us.....we just love her.
Also thank you for taking the time to go over everything regarding her
care, it helps to see it written down.
Here's an update on her status since you left her in our
care. She barked for the first time when I was on the floor playing with her. She
has been enjoying the blanket and the toy you brought.
We found out that she has a good appetite and likes her
water. We've been thinking of naming her Sadie, will let you know for sure
soon. So far she is doing very well at going outside to pee and has also pooped
three times. She is quite the snuggler, and seems so content......this makes us
so happy. We can't get over how smart she is.
My daughter Katy is a nurse and is working days for
awhile so Sadie will be kept company in the evening while I'm working evenings. I have Thursday off this week so will give
her a bath. I plan on calling her new
Vet tomorrow. This Vet has been our
family vet since 1979.....a very long time.
Thank you for everything Linda....you were a Great Foster
Mom....and we will update you frequently.
K~ and K~ and Sadie
:)
