Ahnung helps "at-risk" youth

EXCERT FROM MARILOU'S BLOG:
Ahnung - our north star

“So is Ahnung your dog too?”, asks one of the kids.

“Yes. She wasn’t planned. I met her in October 2008 at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue on the west boundary of Red Lake reservation. She was abandoned with her litter of eight puppies. I remember seeing her in her outdoor kennel, metal bars criss-crossed in front of her face as I pointed my camera towards her. She was nursing her puppies and her nipples were full and almost touching the ground. She looked worn down and haggard. She weighed almost 70 pounds – a solid black dog with unique white markings: one white front paw, patches of white on her face, a white chest and a black tail with a white tip, as if someone had dipped her tail in white paint. Her tail has a curl of a husky. Her face and body type are bull doggish and pit bull-like. Her wrinkles and heavy coat scream shar pei.So why this one dog? There were many other dogs in the shelter – in their outdoor kennels and others running around. There was something about her eyes – was it sadness, was it wisdom, was it acceptance? There was something about the way she looked at me, something about the way her piercing eyes looked right through me. She has a story. She has a purpose. That “something” brought me back one month later to bring her into Pet Haven’s foster program. She arrived testing positive for heartworm, lymes disease and coccidia. We soon learn she has a pellet in one of her nipples, having survived a gunshot wound. She has no front teeth as she has ground it all down which, according to our vet, is probably her attempt to escape from a metal cage. Her rescuer, Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue says many of the pups she rescues have ground down teeth as they struggle to find food and eat dirt and gravel in search of food. Whatever the case, Ahnung’s first 4 years were hard and full of struggles. Her body holds the scars of her past. Her spirit only knows how to live in the present moment.

Ahnung’s rescuer Karen initially gave her a temporary name of “Mama”. Aware of the bond that had formed, she asked me to name her. I chose “Ahnung” because I wanted something to represent and honor her roots and the hope she embodies. Ahnung means “star” in ojibway, the language of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. My partner and I officially adopted Ahnung on January 3rd, 2009. She is my north star. She is hope in the midst of darkness. Her calm, confident and wise presence provides guidance when life seems unbearable. She is reminder of how goodness prevails in the end.As I look at a room of seven kids intent on hearing my story and Ahnung’s story I realize that the light shining from Ahnung’s star is so much brighter than I even imagined. These kids are deemed “at-risk”. Pet Haven (with Ahnung as the ambassador) is partnering with a program called The Lab of the St. Paul Public schools where youth are inspired, encouraged and empowered to discover, understand and share their voices and the truth of their lives. These kids, like Ahnung, have been tossed aside. I look out at the room and I see one of the kids on the floor next to Ahnung petting her and rubbing her belly. He smiles, “man … this dog is loved. I can tell this dog is loved.” I later learn that this young kid had not been engaged in class for the past week and for the first time came alive in class. I would never have known.

We need to build bridges to our youth. We need a kind, gentle and compassionate way to chisel away at walls built over years of abuse or neglect. I believe animals can be that bridge. In mid October when I first laid eyes on Ahnung little did I know she would be instrumental in lighting up the night skies for urban at-risk youth with the brilliance of her star. Her work is just beginning as she heals wounded spirits and gives hope to so many. I tell these kids, when something bad happens and something hurts so badly, I want them to close their eyes and imagine Ahnung. She is the north star for all of us. I want them to hold onto her tightly and trust that she will guide them out of the darkness back into the light. I want them to feel Ahnung’s calm and loving presence. And I want them to know they are not alone.

The young boy grins again and says “man … this dog is loved. This dog is really loved.”

Sadie's found a new home and a new name: Sasha

Here's an update on Sadie- now called Sasha. She was an older dog that has been adopted through Pet Haven into a wonderful home.

Sadie was left behind when her owners moved out. They took their younger dog and left her to lay on her porch for 2 weeks with no food or water. A next door neighbor felt sorry for her and started feeding her. Then she contacted Red Lake Rosie's and she came here.

She was taken to the vet and was spayed and got her shots. They discovered her teeth were all worn down.

We appreciate the rescues taking the Red Lake dogs and cats and finding them such good homes. Below is the note from Sasha's new home which already had a dog named Sadie.

Sincerely, Karen and RLRR

Sasha is good. She has really become a part of our family. She does not like being out in the cold. We sometimes have a hard time letting her out to go to the "bathroom", she will go outside and lie down on the balcony or out by the playset. I think she must have spent a lot of time outside and thinks she is expected to stay out for long periods of time. I let her in and she is very thankful, she just does not alert to us very well when it is her time to go out. We let her out quite often but I think she has been peeing in her bed. I'm sure it will take some time to adjust. She gets along with our other dog Sadie quite well. They play nightly with each other and have a good time. They tend to share toys and like playing tug of war.

Sasha doesn't really like being wrestled or teased by adults. I think she has some trust issues from her past. I am sure she really didn't have anyone that played with her like that when she was a puppy so it's not really natural to her. She is great with the kids. She has a problem with jumping up on people for attention but is learning that it is not ok with kids because it scares them. She is doing very well overall. I can't wait till it warms up so we can start going on walks! I'm sure all of us have a case of cabin fever and need to run around a bit. Hope things are well with you.

Samson returns to Red Lake (for a visit!)

Dear Denise:

I wanted to share the wonderful experience of having Samson revisit Red Lake Rosie's Rescue on Saturday and Sunday, Jan 10 and 11. This time it was he who brought the gifts of dog and cat food for all his friends at the shelter. His mom and dad, D & M brought a larger van full of goodies, and transported out 8 dogs/pups to Animal Ark.

I had butterflies all week as I wondered if Samson would remember us and how he would be after being adopted the past 2 years. He far surpassed what I had expected. What a beautiful and wonderful animal!! He was the perfect gentleman.

He did some exploring around the shelter, and spent time in the cathouse while we visited and exchanged stories about Samson. He knows how to shake, catch, sit and roll over.It was a perfect weekend and made me happy to know that we do have the success of getting a new life for many animals. If anyone had deserved this great life- it was Samson after all the suffering he had endured. It made it all worthwhile. Thank you D & M for loving and caring for Samson.

Carlton is SO Sweet!

Karen:
Carlton, the Collie is on his way to his forever home in Wisconsin. His foster family said he was just the sweetest, most gentle boy they had ever seen.

They have a fourteen week old puppy in their house and Carlton would hold a chew bone in his mouth and let the puppy chew on the other end. Sometimes when Carlton would yawn, the puppy would put its head in Carlton's mouth. Poor Carlton would sit there with his mouth open until the puppy decided to remove its head!

Thank you so much for saving this sweet, gentle dog.

I have been thinking of you and your dogs during this horrible cold spell. Hope everyone made it through safely.

Maya celebrates her second birthday!

Hello,

My wife and I would like to thank you for allowing us to adopt a beautiful puppy in November of 2007. She is wonderful and has brought much joy to our lives. We are contemplating adopting another puppy in the near future. We would like to get the same breed if we can; she is a husky shepherd mix. Maya is beautiful and fun. We know you get animals all the time and we would like to adopt in the next 2-3 months. We are friends of Denise and she keeps us in the loop on puppies coming through as well. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you receive puppies with that mix, again thank you very much.

Ps you will find a picture of Maya's B-day party attached. :)

Update on Morris & his big best buddy

How great is this friendship!

Denise:
The cat in this photo is Morris from Red Lake Rosie's. My brother adopted him last Fall. Morris has befriended a Mastiff-St. Bernard neighbor's dog and they absolutely adore one another. (My husband Tom recently took this photo.) Thanks....

Update on Foxie Moxie

Dear Denise,
(Pix are Mox in pool, Mox w/ her Fox in Sox toy & Moxie as my bath matt :)
It's not safe to encourage me to share stories about Moxie! :)
Let's see...this little girl that I didn't even know such a short time ago follows me around so closely she is always stepping on the back of my shoe or slipper. She loves practicing lessons from class. Sometimes I just use gestures. Moxie loves her squeaky toys! Usually all I have to do is say "squeaky squeak" and she will find one & start squeaking. Sometimes we carry on a squeak conversation back & forth. Perhaps in copying her Elkhound sister Sydneys' rooo-roooo noise, Moxie has started making a soft little roo sound, we praise her & she is doing it more & more often. We practice "bring this to mommy" "bring this to daddy" with an item and she is getting pretty good at it. Got her a pool to see if she would like it and she sure does! The hose though, is even better! She also thinks her new ball that squirts out water when she bites it is really cool too.
I keep adding new games to keep her mentally stimulated. A new one she likes is I creep my hand slowly toward her as she is biting on a toy.
She will stop biting it in eager anticipation of who can grab it quicker.
You can see the excitement in her eyes as she is trying to guess when I will pounce!
The fun Moxie & her sister Sydney have daily is hilarious! Sydney has gained confidence having Moxie here and also classes helped them both a lot.
Since Syd is right handed & Moxie a leftie, they will sit next to each other for a treat & when I say shake they each put their paw in my hand at the same time. Sydney had to learn it's ok for another dog to touch her, so this is a much bigger feat than it may sound! Sydney always liked to play, but the shelties in our home never cuddled w/ her etc, so she was foreign to someone like Moxie who has no comprehension that maybe everyone does not want to be sat on , or leaned on, or laid on top of!!
Yes, we have had some holes chewed in blankets, Some of my under garments have been devoured nearly completely, a shoe or two has some teeth marks on it, there are holes in the back yard just recently because there is some type of bug she is in pursuit of, several stuffed toys have met untimely deaths.........though I remind her those things are not good things to do, I smile inside, delighting that she is happy now, but I think not nearly as happy as she makes me.

The Moxie Smile

Moxie was found on an old truck trail as a young puppy. She had damage to her nose area, and we suspected that she had been shot in the face with perhaps a 22 gun. Anyway- she was found and was very frightened at first. But being hungry, she was not hard to catch. She went to Pet Haven and was adopted by a wonderful family who love her very much.

Here's what her mom wrote:
Moxie got to try corn on the cob this last weekend! She learned QUICKLY how to remove just the kernels from the cob w/ daddy holding it for her.
Mox is very afraid of fireworks, and the safest place is by Daddy. I've been taking 3-4 mile walks on the weekend thru the wooded parks nearby and Moxie is really enjoying that. I would love to clock her speed, cuz man this girl is fast!

The previous owners of our home were golf players. They installed a very large putting green, a sand trap, and this tuft of long grass section. Since the dogs enjoy the coolness of the grassy patch, we don't mow it down. If the ball chances to land in it, Moxie bounces w/ glee in after the ball & will keep diving back down in the grass until she finds the ball.

Samson in his new home

Samson is a large black lab who was rescued 2 years ago. He had no hair from severe mange and the owner said she was trying to kill him by withholding food, but he would not die! The kids in the household threw rocks at him.

Now look at him- he is so beautiful and has a GREAT life. Makes it all worthwhile.

Karen

Here is the update on Samson from Animal Ark:

05/22/2008 - Samson update

Updated on 05/23/2008

One of the dogs we have rescued from Red Lake in the past was Samson. He found a great home and today I received some photos of him and an update! I just had to share his "New life" with all of you, it warmed my heart & I'm sure it will warm yours too.

The following is from Samson's new mom:
When Sam first came to us, he would cower everytime we would raise our handaround him, and would cry in his sleep almost every night. The abuse he suffered must have been terrible. We are so glad the Animal Ark found him,and took him out of that terrible situation. The fact that Sam is probably the sweetest dog on the planet is a miracle, considering what he went through.

He is 108 pounds of pure love. He would sit there and let you pet him for hours. All he wants is love and gentle words, and of course, treats! He loves walking, playing fetch at the dog park, and going for rides inthe car. He knows when it is Thursday. Dan and I go out to Peking restaurant on Thursday's, and he comes along for the ride. He waits patiently in the car because he knows he will get a chicken strip for a treat. He loves to go anywhere in the car. He doesn't much care where, or if the car is even running. One day, I had to go out to the garage and he must have followed me out there. When I couldn't find him, I went back out to the garage, and there he was, sitting in the car (he jumped in thru theopen window), in the dark, almost as if to say "You won't be going anywhere without me".

He hangs out on the couch watching TV with us, and likes to sleep with us for about an hour each night. Then he hops down and goes to his own bed. He is not a "morning" person, and in fact he acts more like a second shift person. When we get up in the morning we let the other two dogs out first, and Sam just lays there on his bed. If you talk to him, he will crack one eye open and look at you, as if to say "just 5 more minutes, please".

All of our friends just love his mellow disposition, and after they hear his story, tell us how lucky Sam was to find us, when in fact, it is the other way around. We are the lucky ones to have found Sam.
