Jasper's story

On February 5th, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue organized the rescue of a little six-month-old puppy from one of the villages on the reservation. A report came to us on our Facebook page of this animal in distress. Thankfully, we were able to engage the help of a nice man named Paul from the village to find the dog and transport him 70 miles to the RLRR shelter.
Taking one look at Jasper, we knew he needed immediate help. He was in a very emaciated, dehydrated condition with an infected wound from a gun shot on his side. Jasper walked with his back arched as if in severe pain. We were sickened at the sight of him, but thankful to have him in our care. We rushed off to the local vet for help.
The X-ray revealed the miraculous report that no pieces of the bullet that shot little Jasper hit any major organs or bones, and the outlook was very good for him. The bullet passed clean through his body with no damage. This baffled the vet.

Jasper spent the night in the hospital and then the next day became a resident in the cathouse under the loving care of Geri. When Jasper would go outdoors to do his business he always wore a coat.
Due to his hunger, Jasper was at first very agitated, trying desperately to get some morsels of food. After getting his fill of food, he became more relaxed and seemed to absolutely love his life in the cathouse.

His posture has since improved and what an angel he is in the cathouse making friends with the cats and Blonde another resident dog.
Jasper is on antibiotics and pain management during the healing process. The warm environment with good food and lots of water all help in his healing. Jasper responds so well to kind words and now feels very worthwhile.
Red Lake Rosie wants to thank Paul and other rescuers who are willing to find the animals like Jasper who need help. Facebook has been very helpful in finding these animals.

As always, we thank all the supporters, rescues, transporters and food donors who make helping the animals in need on the Red Lake Reservation possible.

Ganawenjige - a protector/caretaker for a RLRR animal

Many dogs and cats come into Red Lake Rosie's shelter and stay for weeks or months or, sometimes, permanently. They stay, because they have mange, starvation, illness, and injuries that need to be healed before they can be placed with rescues. They stay, so that Karen can socialize them and teach them how to trust again. They stay until they know that there will always be enough to eat, and they lose their food aggression. They stay waiting for an opening in a rescue. A few will never leave, because they are semi-feral and cannot live as pets in the Cities.

These animals need emergency medical care, antibiotics, vaccines, spay/neuter, heartworm tests, worming medications, flea and tick preventative, and other treatments. The permanent animals also need heartworm preventative, teeth cleaning and care for all of the other things that affect a dog or cat throughout its lifetime. Since, eventually, most will move on to other rescues, Rosie’s doesn’t receive any adoption fees to help defray the costs involved in saving and healing the animals.

We are going to begin sharing the stories of the animals at the shelter, those that are there for a while, and those that are there forever, in the hope that some of you, our wonderful supporters, will choose to become Ganawenjige – a protector/caretaker for a shelter animal.

We rely on individual donations to run the rescue. That often makes it difficult to budget, since we don’t know from month to month what our bank account will look like. We need Ganawenjige who are willing to donate monthly to help us continue to provide veterinary care for the shelter animals.

Our How You Can Help page, where you can sign up to be a Ganawenjige, is not up, yet, on the website, so stay tuned for more info.

In the meantime, our first story is about Jasper, and, sadly, he is a fairly typical example of some of the animals Karen rescues. His medical bill is $325 so far.

JASPER'S STORY
On February 5th, Karen organized the rescue of a six-month old puppy from one of the villages on the reservation. She named him Jasper.

Taking one look at him, Karen knew he needed immediate help. He was very emaciated, dehydrated, and had an infected wound on his side. Jasper walked with his back arched as if in severe pain. Karen was sickened at this sight, yet so thankful to have this boy in her care.
She rushed Jasper to the vet clinic 35 minutes away. The vet determined that Jasper had been shot by a rifle, but, miraculously, the X-ray revealed that no pieces of the bullet hit any major organs or bones. The bullet passed clean through his body with no damage and the prognosis was excellent.

After spending the night at the veterinary clinic, Jasper returned to the shelter where he became a resident in the cathouse.
At first, he was very agitated, trying desperately to get some morsels of food. After getting his fill, he became more relaxed and seemed to absolutely love his life in the cathouse.

His posture has since improved and what an angel he is – making friends with the cats and Blonde, another resident dog.
When Jasper goes outdoors to do his business, he always wears a coat.

Jasper is on antibiotics and pain management during the healing process. The warm environment with good food and lots of water all help in his healing. Jasper responds so well to kind words and now feels very worthwhile.

Jasper, you Romeo!

Update from ARVSS on Jasper, a handsome boy who was quickly adopted and appropriately re-named...

FROM NEW FAMILY:
Thank you so much, Jasper's name has officially been changed to
Romeo!

He is doing great, this week we will be working to get him into our daily routine. He is such a fast learner, he is ringing the bell I hung on our back door to tell us when he has to go outside. He picked that up right away and this morning I signed us all up for obedience classes starting March 2.

He has claimed his spot on the couch already. He is loving playtime in the snow with the kids and he whined when they went to school this morning.

Now today he is enjoying my office and playing ball with me while I work.

I will keep you both updated on how he is doing.

August 8 Transport

NICK'S TRANSPORTWe had a new volunteer, Nick, visit the shelter arriving August 6th and leaving with a transport of 2 cats and 9 puppies and dogs on Sunday the 8th.

NICK AND DOGSNick was a great help at the shelter helping with daily chores and even learned how to drive the Bobcat with the loader. It was a real blessing to have weekend help to clean puppy pens and put down fresh cedar chips. He helped walk dogs, water, feed, and do all the necessary things to keep all the animals healthy and happy.

JASPERJasper, Ella and Shadow went to Act V.

ELLAElla was thrown away at the garbage dump- a beautiful girl with a broken front foot. Act V is helping her.

SHADOWShadow is a very nice black lab mama that we have had at the shelter for a month who is now in the great hands of Dr. Vickie at Act V. Her story is a special one.

SHADOW'S PUPS
SHADOW'S PUPSShe came in after she was found with a litter of puppies in a log pile this summer, and was limping and malnourished. One by one we got her puppies out- five altogether. Shadow's lst pup found was a tan female that went to Act V. 2 more recovered and l more recovered; these three went to ARVSS.

SHADOW'S LAST PUPThe very last pup was Rachel. She was near death from dehydration and starvation. She is doing very well now in foster care at Act V.

SHADOW & MILESShadow was spayed and vaccinated at Clearwater Vet and her blood test revealed she had heartworm, anaplasmosis and lymes. Additionally she had a uterine infection where buckshot pellets were found embedded at the time of her spay. Shadow left Sunday July 18 for Act V. Dr. Vickie reports that her xray also showed a bullet in her lower leg, which she will remove. Shadow, her pups, and Sheeba were all rescued from the same residence and both dogs had been shot! Thank you for Act V and all our supporters who made their rescue possible. They are both great dogs and were used as target practice by someone in the neighborhood.

RACHELThe miraculous part of this story is that these dogs were rescued over a period of a month and no one really can explain how little Rachel survived all this time by herself.

SAMMYSammy is a great guy brought from Ponemah and has a great personality and great future now in foster care with Pet Haven

PUPPY PILEThese five husky mix pups who went to TLC were found in the woods at 4 weeks- now at 6 weeks they are growing like weeds. (They were featured on the blog last week.)

LEROYPATCHESLeroy and Patches went to Feline Rescue. Handsome young Leroy was going to be shot, and we gladly took him and neutered him. Patches is a pretty dilute tortie. Feline Rescue reports that they are both very sweet cats and likely to be adopted soon!

Thank you to Nick, transporters, Denise and Laura and rescues for taking the animals for their second chance.

Sincerely, Karen
