Digging out from a big snow at RLRR

I am sending some pictures taken at the RLRR shelter this morning.
We have gotten 18 inches to two feet of snow here!

The doggies seemed to like it as they romped in the fresh snow. There was a severe wind chill but didn't seem to dampen the dogs spirit at all. Precious and Rhoda are pictured.

I transported 20 puppies and dogs. I was amazed at how Karen can plan and fit all the crates to maximize the space! I dropped off two sweet dogs (Cody and Evelyn) at Tri-County Humane Society.

I pulled over in Clearwater to take Endora out of her crate because I dearly needed a puppy fix. She was the pup that was brought in with the stab wound to her chest. She had been stitched up and healed nicely. I put her in my lap, she looked up at me a few times, then promptly fell asleep and didn't stir until we arrived home. Endora, Spice, Faith and her eight pups all went to Pet Projects Rescue.

Linda and Gary from Animal Ark were waiting with the van as I pulled up. We transferred all the crates to the van and they were on their way. Angelica and her pups had been found living in a van and starving. Only four of her eight pups survived. Etta also went to Animal Ark.

Sonja from All-Dog Rescue wasn't there to pick up Wilma yet, so I took her in my fenced-in back yard to stretch her legs. She popped out of the crate, jumped around happily in the snow, then went and did her "business." She had kept her kennel clean the whole drive. She was a little black and brown dog, and Karen had said she was very frightened. She didn't appear scared at all in the yard - just happily sniffing around, bouncing in the snow. She kept running back to me. Sonja arrived in a few minutes, and I handed off my new favorite! She has a pomerian/pug who she thought would enjoy playing with Wilma.It's so satisfying to do this work for Red Lake Rosie's. I'm grateful to be involved with such a dedicated group.

Heartworms are parasites that are transmitted to dogs via mosquitoes. Giving your dog monthly heartworm preventative during the summer months can protect them from these nasty parasites. In Minnesota, it's generally recommended that you give your dog heartworm preventative from May - November (in warmer climates additional months or even year-round treatment may be recommended).

Depending on the level of infestation, heartworm treatment can be painful and dangerous (not to mention expensive) for dogs who do contract the nasty little buggers. Monthly heartworm preventative is not cheap, but it is inexpensive compared to the cost of treatment and the risk of pain (physical for the dog and emotional for the owner!) if your dog does contract heartworms. To learn more about heartworm in dogs, please click here. And please call your vet to schedule an appointment for a heartworm test & heartworm preventative prescription this spring.
Pet Haven currently has a couple of dogs in foster care who are being treated for heartworm infestation. Both are female shepherd mixes from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue (Chic, top, and Alfie, bottom). Both are hoping for donations to cover the cost of their care as well as foster homes to rest in while they finish out their treatment (if interested, please email pethavendogs@yahoo.com).

How heartworm saved LaDonna

I wanted to share this great story about LaDonna and how she came to us off a chain with heartworm and how she has now a great life thanks to lots of people.
Colleen and I made the rescue when we went and got her off the chain where she lived and took her to the RAVS neuter/spay clinic last summer. There was another male shepherd also chained on the property and we took them both to the clinic.

We felt so bad for these dogs, and wanted desperately to get them off the chains and to find them a new life. It was almost a blessing, when LaDonna was spayed and got her shots, she tested positive for heartworm.

How can having heartworm be a blessing?? Well, in this case, it was her ticket off the chain and on to Red Lake Rosie's shelter after the clinic was over. Colleen successfully negotiated her surrender to us so she could get the medical help she needed. Sadly, they would not surrender the male shepherd, but at least we were able to free LaDonna.

Friends of Flicka donated $2000 of emergency funds to treat all the dogs were were getting that were needed heartworm treatment.

After her treatment, LaDonna was transported on August 23rd to Second Hand Dogs in Claremont, MN where Patti fell in love with her, renamed her Molly and keeps her for her very own.See her picture now with her friends Francis and Sophia! Molly is the one laying on the edge of the couch.

A thank you to all who played a part in her rescue, treatment and placement in a loving home.

RLRR Metro Support Team meeting notes--01/22/09

Pet Expo February 21 & 22
Lynn is organizing and scheduling volunteers for the Expo.
We would like to have Rosie’s dogs at the booth during peak hours. Claudia will bring her dog, and DeeDee will bring her foster dog. We need to find a few more people who would be willing to bring their dogs for two hours or so.
We discussed selling dog treats and some donated blankets. Danielle Engle (Best Friends MN network) has offered to make several small pet blankets for us to sell. We also have some donated larger fleece blankets. Nancy O’Sullivan is making tote bags, and there are a few T-shirts left that will be for sale, too.
Claudia suggested having a fan at the booth, since it was very hot last year, especially for the dogs. Claudia will bring candy to give away at the booth.
Lynn will update the Rosie’s information on the promotional materials and make either a business card or quarter sheet to hand out at the booth.

Animal Humane Society Clinic – April 21-24
Dr. Culbertson has scheduled a spay/neuter clinic. We will need volunteers to support the clinic.
We discussed the need to replace the HSUS RAVS clinic with more of the smaller clinics this year.

RLRR on Facebook
Rory has started a Rosie’s Facebook group. It already has 78 members, and she has recruited a volunteer who lives just south of the reservation and found Rosie’s on Facebook.

2008 Accomplishments
We briefly discussed the accomplishments, which are remarkable. Through her herculean efforts, Karen rescued, sheltered, and placed 619 dogs and cats last year. She also facilitated many improvements at the shelter, including a new well, new kennels, and a re-vamped cat house.

Funds
The Red Lake Gaming Commission has granted money to pay for Mike’s salary and the heat and light in the cat house through May.

Fundraising
Colleen shared her idea for a benefit that would involve a recipe contest, auction, and lunch/dinner. The food would be made from the winning recipes.
Rory suggested exploring the possibility of having previous and/or current Red Lake inhabitants sell their native arts, crafts, food, etc. at a benefit, and possibly featuring Native American food.

Transports
Crystal and her friend, Ruth are going up to Rosie’s on Friday, January 30 and will transport animals back to the Cities on Sunday February 1st.
We will need another transport later in February and one or two in March.

Fred -- Little Big Man

A cute black spaniel, who was known as Little Big Man at RLRR, was recently transported to Pet Haven and re-named Fred. He has already been featured on both Pet Haven's foster blog and dog blog and everyone seems to like him! His very experienced foster mom has this to say:

Hi Karen-we are so loving Fred. After 21 foster dogs-Fred is #22-I would adopt Fred in a minute. He is very sweet and loving. His skin is improving with good food and baths. Here is the blog entry for him. And look for Junior too. Thanks L.

There is a new little big man in town and his name is Fred. Fred is a 3 year old spaniel mix from the Red Lake reservation. Since hitting the big city Fred has had quite the social life. He met up with Junior now Cookie a former foster dog of his current foster mom. Actually Fred ould be Cookie's daddy-both being from the same hood and all. There are similarities. Fred and Cookie had a fine time romping in the snow and sharing some treats.Fred attended his first adoption event where he showed he is a go with the flow kind of guy. He sat patiently during the event. And then helped his mom hand out supplies.Last night Fred had a sleepover with Suzy-soon to be officially adopted-and PH alum Mister. It was a houseful of black dogs for sure. Everyone played and played till it was time to sack out. Yukon -- a brother from the 'hood

Yukon was surrendered at RLRR on 12/30/08. He had mange on his tail. He was neutered, had his shots and left RLRR on Jan 18 to go to All Dog Rescue. We were thrilled to hear that he was adopted recently, but check out the really amazing part about his new home:Hi, DeeDee;

Yes, Yukon was adopted, but we discovered something really cool while completing the paperwork.

The couple who adopted him have a 1.5 year old beautiful white husky mix with a few red markings. Well, when our volunteer was going through the paperwork she told them that Yukon had come from Rosie's originally, and they said that their other dog had originally come from there as well!

I don't have a lot of specifics on her, but they adopted her as a puppy from St. Francis - she had come there with 2 litter-mates, and their girl was the runt of the litter.

I know you'll be thrilled to know she is happy, playful, friendly, loved, and she and Yukon looked like they had been best friends since birth after spending just a few minutes together.

I do love the happy endings so much - it really is what gives me the strength to keep going when rescue gets hard!!
