My, Gilbert, How you have grown!!

Gilbert (now Luke) goes home

UPDATES FROM ACT V ON FACEBOOK:
Gilbert arrived tonight from Red Lake.
Emergency intake: bite wounds and broken bones post dog attack.
Stable for now.

Definitely feeling better!
Bandage changed - all looks good. We can thank his foster family for that!

So...
We have been struggling a bit with Gilbert.
He is doing fine; improving!
But tearing through cones, nibbling off bandages, breaking teeth on his external hardware and poor Vicki is exhausting herself in time, attention and resources trying to stay ahead of this smart boy. (As is his foster family!)
Then the discussion came to be, "what is his pain level?", can we make it better? Can we improve his outcome?
So... We are trying a new approach.

Better every day.

Pain management plan in place and seems to be working.
Gilbert is playing with his toys and walking (ok, maybe running around and seems happy.
The whole cone-on-the-head thing still isn't working for him but his foster family is staying on top of it.

Well, this adorable, sweet, good-go-along boy is nearing his adoption! It's going to be very difficult for his foster family to say good bye.
The home visit was done last night and a few loose ends will be tied up but things are looking very promising.

Gilbert's future looks bright and the family has raised two Rottie's in the past. He will also have land to romp around on! He's going to live on a horse ranch!!

To his foster family we scream, "Thank you!" (again, and again) for another job well done. We all know letting go is the hardest part but wow - they did an exceptional job at healing the emotional and physical injuries of this badly beaten-up puppy. Kudos to Stacie and Eric!

We've been checking in with Gilbert's new family and all is well!
He has an appointment with the surgeon one day next week and we'll get to see even more of this this cutie!

Luke was to have surgery yesterday to dig out a dead piece of bone, but the surgeon decided to give him more time. He’s living the good life on a horse breeding ranch and loving it! Isn’t he handsome???

Owen and Gilbert

Owen came into South Hyland to get his broken jaw reassessed and tweak the fixation. Gilbert had his shattered tibia fixed by a board certified surgeon. He has pins and an external bar put in his leg for the next 6-8 weeks. His broken front leg will just need rest for now. All went well and both are back with their fosters. Do you think there is any resemblance between these two dogs from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue?

What happens when you put 2 large breed dogs, an 11 week old Rottweiler pup, and Red Lake together? You get a badly beaten up puppy with 2 broken legs. He has enough bite wounds to percolate your coffee through.

The Red Lake police brought him to Karen on Thursday night and we got the call at 7 a.m. friday. For those of you who do not know, the Gonvick Veterinary Clinic in Red Lake closed and Karen has no vet services available at this time.

Sandi picked up Gilbert and Simeon today and brought them to the clinic. The staff surrounded him to care for him and the doctors shook their heads looking at the x-rays. He is tonight resting in temporary foster with the adopters of Shyla (also from Red Lake).
