Cheyenne Alicia update

I am so happy we received this update and photos of beautiful Cheyenne from Dr. Silva- this is a wonderful update on her. She was rescued in Barton's Camp Projects and would have never been still living in the condition she was found. Makes it all worthwhile!

Karen
NOTE FROM CHEYENNE 2/22/14:
Hi guys, Cheyenne here. Ah-life is good for me here and spring is in the air. I can smell it from the flowers that are peeping out in our yard and see it in the grass coming out of the ground. Lots birds are singing happily too: All the ones that live here and new ones coming to visit. Pretty soon, the tiny hummingbirds will show up too. I cannot tell a lie. Ever since you guys rescued me, my life has been going in a positive direction. I’m coming out of my shell more and more every day. Too much, my mommy and daddy say because a few months ago I decided to test my boundaries. I took off on our property and decided to explore. I was really looking for the deer that come by and visit us every night because we have two deer feeders for them. We don’t hunt. My forever mommy and daddy just feed the critters. Everyone is welcome here: squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, deer, armadillos and we have even have visits from foxes, coyotes and a bobcat, except for mice. Mommy and daddy have a little war going on with them lately because they were not so nice. Even though they have lots of room to roam and lots of food they share with the birds, they crawled into our two cars and cost mommy and daddy lots of headaches. I told the mice to go away, but they didn’t listen and now they’re welcome anymore. At least, not for a long, long, long time from now.
Now I know why my mommy and daddy don’t just let us run around on our eighteen acres. They don’t want us to get hurt or hurt another animal. I didn’t want to hurt any deer. I just wanted to find them and run with them, but daddy didn’t like that He came looking for me because I wouldn’t come back. I heard his voice calling, but I was so caught on a smell that I had to go find the source of it. I hopped around the woods and saw and heard my daddy, but my Husky instinct was just too strong to turn back and run to him. I was having so much fun running and skipping about. I ran so much that I almost made it next door to the neighbor’s property. That is, until I decided to stop and go pee pee. When I did that, daddy grabbed my collar and looped a belt around it and we walked back home. Daddy was annoyed, but didn’t hit or yell me, though I did get a stern look. Mommy came to meet us and I got a lecture from her. I was so happy that I didn’t mind. I got to explore and had fun, though my brother Damon wasn’t with me. My mommy and daddy said that I blew it though: That they couldn’t trust me off a leash anymore and that I had to go back on the long rope when we go walking again.
I’m so disappointed, but they love me. They told me that there are lots of bad things in the world and lots of mean people and anything could have happened to me. I wouldn’t like that. I also wouldn’t like leaving my big bed that I get to sleep with mommy and daddy and my brother Damon and my kitty sister Princess. I wouldn’t want to lose out on my doggie cookies that I get to eat after dinner every night. I’d miss out on a great deal if I ran away, but the smells out in the woods surrounding our house were so cool. Oh-well, I can live without it to live with my forever family. I just wish that we got some snow here, but mommy and daddy said it doesn’t happen much down here, if at all. That’s okay. I can live with that. Besides, even though I’m a Husky girl mixed with German shepherd I think I spent too much time outdoors on the Reservation not being warm enough because I really love having a fireplace in our house. I look at it all year long, and then, when it is on, I am so happy. I also love that mommy keeps a big colorful afghan on the bed in the winter. It is so cozy and comfy and I like to snuggle on it.
Until next time, Cheyenne is signing off. Tonight, while we watch TV we’re going to eat popcorn. Whenever daddy eats popcorn, he makes us both a bowl of our very own. Yummy for our tummies. Sometimes, we even get a ginger snap and that’s even better than a doggie cookie. Bye for now.

Love, Cheyenne
P.S. I was once known as Alicia but now proudly known as Cheyenne Alicia or Chey Chey (sounds like shy-shy). My mommy and daddy are sending some cool photos of moi. Aren’t I cute and happy and sassy now?

MUSHR pups from RLRR

UPDATE FROM MUSHR:
Both Dublin and Dorsey (formerly Cheyenne and Shiloh) were adopted through MUSHR (Minnesota's Unwanted Siberian Husky Rescue) and went to great homes! They were signed up for puppy classes and I believe they are probably going to them currently.

I've attached a couple of pics. They are so darn cute!.

C~

I'd say that's an understatement. They've come a LONG way!!

Husky pup survivors: Cheyenne & Shiloh

On Thursday, February 23rd, we had a call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to pick up a tiny husky pup found wandering in a neighborhood in Redby. We responded to the call and picked up this little girl we called Cheyenne. She came in VERY lethargic, starved, dehydrated and full of mange, fleas and chewing lice.

The very next day we got a call from Fannie telling us she found a little male husky pup, we now call Shiloh laying in the snow near her house in Redby barely able to moan, so she wrapped him up in a blanket and brought him to the shelter.

Shiloh was immobile and his body temp dropping, so we warmed him with hot water bottle and hair blower and massaged his body. We were very doubtful, but soon he came back to life. Fannie was very emotional about finding the puppy and if it were not for her quick action, Shiloh would not have lived.

Shiloh is eating and walking around now- He is more emaciated and dehydrated than Cheyenne, but growing stronger each day.

We are so happy that MUSHR took Cheyenne and Shiloh on March 4th transport and we are very hopeful they will continue to thrive and have a great life ahead of them.

A special thanks to Geri, Fannie, and MUSHR for taking the little husky babies. Also to Barbie for the transport.

Cheyenne update

This update on Cheyenne Alicia is so great. Mike and I picked her up a year ago in Barton's Projects. Her owner did not want her and turned in 2 dogs that day, of which Alicia was one.

I am so happy for her! karen

UPDATE FROM ADOPTERS:
Just another note on Cheyenne....

She's still doing great....we keep talking about how none of you rescuers would even recognize her now. She loves to eat. She's filled out nicely, but not obese: she's too active outside wrestling and running with her canine brother Damon every day. Her coat is shiny and her eyes are wide and bright. She sleeps at the foot on our bed with Damon at night, though sometimes she is miss independent and prefers the isolation of her crate at the end of the bed.

You should see her at mealtime. We have an Audubon bird clock in our kitchen. Every hour a different bird sings to ring in the hour. The 3:00 bird is the cardinal, which signals it is dinner time. They both run into the kitchen to eat. Chey runs in and plops herself down in front of the food cabinet, so as not to miss the meal. She and DAmon eat in the kitchen together three feet apart from each other without a problem. In fact, when they eat, the cats are behind them also eating at the same time in their spots.

She is very much a Husky. She likes to sing and talk everyday. She greets us every evening at the door with a song when we come home from work. Sometimes, she comes into the house singing. She has become protective of her family and can be heard and seen barking at the wildlife on our property or noises she hears outside their fenced portion of the yard. Sometimes she starts the barking, or she backs up Damon when he begins barking. It is comical watching them race out to the back of the fenced yard when we let them out, so they can scare something away or let others know they're there. When she and Damon hear the coyotes, they bark at them. She loves jumping at the frogs but doesn't hurt them.

Cheyenne is devoted to Damon. She hates riding with him in the car because he is so crazy about his rides and jumps all about, sometimes on top of her, but she won't be separated from him. She's just as devoted to the cats. When she's outside and they're let out into the yard, she follows them around and sits or lies down by their side, whether they want her nearby or not. She won't go into the house when they're still outside unless we command her to. When she is let back out she races to check on them. If she doesn't see them come back in the house, she races around the house to find them and only settles down once she sees them safe. The boy cat Charlie loves to interact with the dogs and is always playing with them causing Chey to howl and sing at him.

She's become quite affectionate and isn't shy about seeking out individual attention and affection from us. Little by little each day, she comes more and more out of her shell and has developed into a more beautiful little girl. She is no longer afraid of being hugged and looks forward to her daily family hug in which Mr. Silva and I hug each other and hug each dog too at the same time. She's less afraid of Damon lying so close to and on top of her. She used to jump and run away when he first did that. Now she's more relaxed around him. She also doesn't hesitate to growl at him when he gets too rough with her, but she's not vicious or mean in any way. The two dogs are perfect together and great for each other. Damon has helped us bring her out of her shell, and she has helped him calm down a bit.

Cheyenne has come so far, considering that she was an outside dog for so long without bonding to anyone, she has done great. She is bonded to us now like glue and we to her. It is difficult to believe that she wasn't always with us. In another week marks the anniversary of the date Red Lake Rosie rescued her, which we'll mark as her third birthday here. We're so very glad we found her. We knew she'd move into the house without much difficulty and she did. All she needed was the encouragement to do so, understanding, patience and love. And she is a perfect example of that too, especially with her hyper, social butterfly canine brother Damon. He wants to play all the time, and sometimes, she just doesn't. She likes to lie down and smell the grass and listen to the sounds outside. Sometimes she just wants to conserve her energy. She's a true Husky; if it isn't on her agenda, it'll just have to wait until she is ready.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that Cheyenne Alicia is doing well. She has developed a food allergy and can no longer tolerate wheat or grain, but lives the high life of having to eat duck and venison dog food for each meal.

Take care. And thanks again for all you do.

Regards,
The Silvas and Princess, Charlie, Damon and Cheyenne

Addedum to update....we forgot to say how very, very much Cheyenne enjoys living in the house. From the comfy spot on the sofa to her comfy spot on our king sized bed to the cozy spot in her very own crate, Chey (pronounced shy) loves inside living.

She loves getting her belly rubbed. And she loves giving kisses to her forever mommy and daddy on command and off. Whenever we put our face to hers and say, "kissy, kissy, kissy" or not, she gives us licks on the face. She is adorable. She loves chewing on a rib bone after a rib dinner we enjoy or chewing on a rawhide bone that Damon 'broke in' for her.

We took some photos this evening while they shared a paper plate of some swiss steak. Table food is a treat. True to her Husky spirit, Chey LOVES seafood. As evidenced by the photos, Damon and Cheyenne are bonded and quite comfy with one another, enough to share a plate together. Enjoy!

Cheyenne Alicia loves her new home

ADOPTER UPDATE:
Just a quick note...we're all finally settled in after our long distance move from chilly, gray Minnesota to the warmer, deep, south and wanted to give an update on Cheyenne Alicia.

Cheyenne is doing well, even adjusting to the warmer weather. We bought her a kiddie wading pool, which she knew what to do with right away. We have 18 acres here with a fenced yard just around the house: She and Damon have loads of fun running around chasing, racing and wrestling with one another. She loves to keep an watchful eye on the cats when they're outside too. We also take them for walks around our property and Sunday rides with daddy on D,C and D day. She enjoys sticking her head out the window during the car ride.

She's doing well. She's fully bonded with all of us, especially to her canine brother, Damon and the cats. She has her special place at the foot of the bed with us and Damon. She still plays mommy to the cats. She's learned not to be too aggressive with Princess anymore, which makes Princess very happy and allows Cheyenne to spend time alongside her more often.

She and Damon are even closer and she is more comfortable with him after they spent time together alone when they were boarded two times just before we moved. Now when he drops down alongside her to cuddle up or just rest, she no longer runs away. She just learned how to walk on our wood floors off the carpet runners and is enjoying sniffing everything she couldn't get to before: everything is new.

Thanks again for all you do and for rescuing Cheyenne. She is a happy girl now and we intend to keep her that way.

Regards,
The S~ family

Cheyenne Alicia moves indoors

Alicia came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from Barton's Camp Projects, an unwanted female who had litters in the past. She was not a very friendly dog, and a bit suspicious of us when she arrived at the shelter. Mike Dosal and I rescued her and another female shepherd on the property that cold winter day.

She looks like she is enjoying her new family. Thanks to Patti Simonette and Secondhand Dogs and her new family for giving her a new life!

Peace-
Karen RLRR

UPDATE ONE FROM NEW FAMILY:
Just thought you'd like to know that Cheyenne is nicely taking to being a family dog. We think she's truly enjoying the comforts inside as opposed to being outside all the time. She actually follows Damon (her new brother dog) outside, but waits for him on the deck or quickly comes back inside on her own. Not bad for a dog that two weeks ago DID NOT want to come inside at all.

In just the past two weeks, she's bonded with Damon, the cats and us. She follows Damon everywhere, checks on the cats and goes to bed in her own brand new crate next to Damon's crate at the end of the bed. The crate is open, but she stays in it all night.

She does a great deal of husky talking to Damon, the cats and us each morning and throughout the day. She's enjoying having a box of doggie toys available to her and doggie treats. She's learned to "Come" on command, though not 100% yet. She's learning "sit" and "shake".

She received a clean bill of health from our vet yesterday and jumped back into the jeep after her visit; guess she couldn't wait to get out of there. She definitely did not want to go in. She's still nervous about jumping in and out of the car and going downstairs, but has no problem on jumping up/off our high bed.

Other than that, she's fine. She's obviously very happy. She looks forward to her two meals a day and has developed a healthy appetite eating 3 cups a day. She has even slowed down in her eating instead of racing to finish her food.

UPDATE TWO FROM NEW FAMILY:
As requested, Karen, here are five photos attached of Cheyenne and her new brother Damon, too, for your blog. All is well as another day as a family is near a close.

As each day passes, she and Damon are more comfortable with one another and, as a result, wrestle even more and race each other and chase each other around the back yard. On Saturdays, we go for rides to help her adjust to them and get in/out the vehicles.

As time passes and she settles in more over the next few weeks, we hope to take them both to a dog park together and see how that goes. Since Damon loves it, and she follows him, it should go off fine.

Since yesterday, she is even having some independent thought, free of Damon, for she is enamored with the cats and follows them, and she loves grabbing a bone from their toy box and chewing on it.

CHEYENNE & PRINCESSTHIRD UPDATE:
Cheyenne is doing extremely well here. She loves being a family dog. She and our male, Damon are best buddies. They play everyday and sleep like babies at night. She knows various commands now, come when called, sit, stay, no, off , up and let's go out and let's go for a ride. She is a very happy little girl. She thinks our two senior cats are her babies and she's so entralled with them. Whenever they're around, inside or outside, she follows them everywhere. She's adjusted very well and we couldn't be more pleased with and for her.

I'm enclosing the latest photo of her with her older, but much smaller sister Princess. Just a note, we'll be moving soon out of state, and don't worry, Cheyenne Alicia comes with us with the family. We'll keep in touch about her.

Regards,
The S~ family including Princess, Charlie, Damon and Cheyenne Alicia

Mike to the rescue again!

Mike came up Friday November 5th and stayed at the shelter until Sunday when he took out 4 puppies on to their destination at Second Hand Hounds.

MIKE & BOBCATIt was a very busy weekend as Mike worked so hard getting final preparations for winter done. He is especially skilled at using the Bobcat. He started by removing all the piles of straw from kennel cleaning which had built up. Then the project of insulating the cathouse addition by insulating with tarp and then placing 2 tiers of straw around. This prevents our water pipes from freezing as well as reduces our winter heating bill. Mike did a perfect job.

CALYPSO, MIKE, AND WINTERIZED GUEST QUARTERSOn Saturday we answered the call to rescue 3 female adult dogs at Barton's and McBrides Housing Projects. One was preganant, one in esterous, and we are not sure of the other one. It was rewarding to get these 3 unspayed females before winter hits or there would be coutless animals suffering in midwinter when the weather gets cold.

We also delivered food to residents in McBrides Projects east of Redby.

Needless to say the storage barn needed more organization. Thanks to Mike we have shelving units in the barn, and when he comes up he manages to get the area better organized.

BUSKYBUSKYWhen Mike left- he took Busky, a larger lab pup; 2 tiny pups Tiffany and Tiane; and Cheyenne, a larger shep pup all enroute to Second Hand Hounds.

TIFFANY & TIANNEWe are so happy they stepped up to take Cheyenne who arrived Thursday night with Nancy, a teacher from the Circle of Life School in White Earth. Her former student had called that their puppy was hit by a car and was injured and Red Lake Rosie's got a call.

CHEYENNEShe was put on pain management while we sent out her picture and story to many rescues on Thursday night. It appeared Cheyenne has a broken right leg, and a broken tail. Well, before the night was over, Second Hand Hounds heroically responded and now there is hope for Cheyenne.

Thank you Mike, and Second Hand Hounds for making it possible for this special transport to the metro. Thank you Lauren for coordinating all the transports. So many people make the rescue of these animals such a successful possibility. It takes teamwork and we have wonderful people on our team!

Sincerely, Karen

UPDATE FROM SECONDHAND HOUNDS ON CHEYENNE:
Cheyenne is having surgery tomorrow. She will need plates in both her front left and rear left legs. Although it is very expensive, she is well worth it! Everyone who meets her loves her. Thank you for saving her!!

How cute is Cheyenne? Soooo Cute!!!

Two pups came into RLRR at the April clinic and they were called Big and Little. Big was in the RLRR foster program, but was soon adopted by K. We just received an update on Big, now Cheyenne and these pictures:
LUCKY AND CHEYENNEI cannot believe how fast she is growing. She is definitely getting shepherd ears! She stands tall to the bottom of Lucky's stomach now. I can't wait to see what he does when she gets bigger. They wrestle a lot and I think he's in for trouble when she gets big enough.
Everything else is going well. We go in Friday for the next shots. I'm anxious to see how much she weighs. She is getting hard to hold now.
She is still eating crazy. I have to watch her in the yard because she tries swallowing big sticks and wood chips. Other than that I hope we get up north to the lake this weekend and let her have some fun there too.
