The Tale of Peanut, the Panda kitten

Back in November, I got a note from Karen about an injured kitten:

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took in a kitten-- I call it Peanut as I am not sure if a boy or girl. This poor little kitten came from a place where the dog attacked her and has hurt her little leg and foot. Actually both feet are bitten. The woman who rescued her told me she has been repeatedly been bitten.

This poor little one has a strong will to live, as I got the call last week and I told them to bring her--but they didn't. When she finally came in last night her leg was badly infected. We are off to the vet today to get her help.

We know there are a lot of healthy cats and kittens out there, and we know we do not have any funds left in our medical account, but this little one deserves help. She will be needing vet care and special litter so it won't clump up on her wounds. Maybe there is someone out there who wants to help little Peanut?

Peace- Karen

UPDATE:
Peanut is resting peacefully under anesthesia. The good news is there are no broken bones, and the vet dressed the wounds and gave antibiotics. We got her the soft litter and the vet said she should heal fine and the hair will grow back eventually. She is back at the shelter.

So--no amputation necessary!! Hurray for Peanut!! And now Feline Rescue has agreed to take her in and continue her care.

Karen :)

UPDATE FROM ME TO KAREN:
BTW--Just checked on Peanut. SHE is a big hit at the vet's office. She will stay there for a week or two getting a bandage change daily until the wound is healed over. The vet took her home last night and plans to take her home for the weekend, too. The Feline Rescue foster coordinator Cathy Harrington was smitten with her, too. She had a foster home waiting for her, but the vet decided to foster her at her house. A lucky kitten!

FELINE RESCUE BLOG POST:
Panda Bear [fka Peanut] came to Feline Rescue ill and injured. She is doing wonderfully now in her foster home and has made a full recovery. Panda is ready to find her purrrfect family. [She was adopted March 4.]

FOSTER MOM TO ADOPTIVE HOME:
Just checking to see how things are going with Panda? I assume the two cats are getting along together and probably more than doubling the trouble around the place but I guess that's what kittens are supposed to do!

ADOPTIVE HOME TO FOSTER MOM:
Things have been going great with Panda. She's very well adjusted here and happy to have another cat as a playmate. No problems whatsoever. She even has a favorite chair to sleep in.

Linda's second visit and transport

We had another visit from Linda Hultquist at RLRR shelter on November
15 - 17. Again lots of work was done for the cats, additional kennel weatherization, and shelter yard cleaning. Linda can operate the skidloader very well.

LINDA ADOPTS DOVERWhen she left, she took Dover the cat which she fell in love with on her last visit. She and David adopted him.

MARLEY & MARTIN ON ARRIVAL AT RLRRMARLEY & MARTIN ON DEPARTURE FROM RLRRShe also took out Marley and Martin--two little shep pups that were found at a construction site near death on September 19. They had mange, starvation and dehydration, but were in fine shape when they left for All Dog Rescue foster care.

ALLISON & ALICIAAll Dog also took Allison, a shep into their program.

PEANUTLinda also transported little Peanut, an injured kitten to Feline Rescue where we hear she has won the heart of all.

LINDA & CATSThank you to Linda, All Dog and Feline Rescue for helping these wonderful animals find their forever homes.

Good Grooming

I wanted to share the good news that Cheri of Friendly Fins Pet Store in Bemidji is offering to do complimentary grooming for shelter dogs that need a haircut.

CHERIEOne of the problems we have in our area is many people get breeds of dogs that require grooming and they do not get groomed. As a result we are seeing animals suffering with overgrowth of hair filled with burrs and matts. Other items in the fur may include a fishhook, a piece of candy, and other items. Also it is a breeding grounds for fleas, lice and mange.

PEANUT BEFOREEspecially in hot weather, these animals are really suffering.

PEANUT AFTERWe are thankful to have grooming at the clinics and now Cheri will take in some shelter dogs for grooming when the clinic is not in operation.

MOUSER: LION KINGThank you to Cheri and all the clinic groomers for freeing these dogs and teaching the people that these dogs need to be clipped and bathed regularly.

Dani & Fernando visit

DANI & FERNANDO AND DOGSIt was great to have Dani and her friend from Argentina, Fernando, visiting Red Lake Rosie's Rescue August 3-4, 2010. They did a lot of work with all the various puppy litters we had including stripping puppy pens and putting fresh cedar chips down, watering and feeding animals, and bathing puppies many of which had mange.

DANI & WOBBLESDani became especially attached to the little orphan puppy, Wobbles, who was found on the highway and only about 3 weeks old. He made the journey to the Twin Cities, but began having seizures and died. We take comfort that he died in loving hands.

FERNANDODani used her expertise in veterinarian care and shared that she starts vet school this fall. Fernando is also off to school this fall and was helpful with all the heavy work. On Wednesday they left early after helping with the morning chores.

PATTONPatton was headed to Tricounty Humane Society.

PEANUTPeanut came in VERY matted and left with a haircut and a nice bath bound for MARS foster care.

BARBIEBarbie, the pomeranian, was also found wandering along the highway and went to MARS.

MITTENSMittens, a darling orange and white juvenile kitten with extra toes, was found at the Ponemah dump and has headed to a RLRR foster home.

Thank you Fernando and Dani for all your hard work and dedication to the animals! Thank you to Tricounty, MARS, and RLRR foster caregivers.

Karen

TRANSPORTA NOTE FROM DANI:
We had a wonderful time helping Karen out and she could not have been more welcoming and hospitable toward us. She even made us dinner with veggies from her garden! YUM! Thanks Karen for all of your hard work! You truly are an amazing woman and someone to look up to.
Sincerely,
Dani

Found a Peanut

THIS SPECIAL FAMILY IS FAMOUS! SEE THE ARTICLE (AND MORE PHOTOS) IN THE ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS.

On October 29, a mama german shepherd dog was hit by a car and killed near the Red Lake Elementary School. She was nursing a litter of puppies that were only 3 weeks old. Thankfully, the orphan puppies were accepted by the Animal Humane Society. Nokomis took them to the metro on October 31st and Dee Dee transported them to the St. Paul AHS the following day.

As Dee Dee checked in the puppies she noticed a lactating pit bull, called Peanut being checked in at the same time. Well, Peanut took on the orphaned litter and they are all doing fine.

It seemed that it was all meant to be -- they all arrived at the same time just where they needed to be!
