Lily the Chihuahua- Lucky to be alive!

You ask yourself- “How much food does it take to sustain a Chihuahua?” When Lily came last week to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, she had a protruding backbone and hips. Her ribs were showing and her sternum was sticking out with no flesh on it. We wondered how Lily could possibly get in this condition?

LILY WITH GERI AT RLRR
The person who rescued Lily stated that Lily had spent the winter outdoors besides being starved. We do not know how this little girl survived.

On arrival, she began eating small soft meals and little by little began to eat at a normal rate. She had a nice dry bed in a warm house. No more outdoor living for her.

Understandably, it was taking a while to gain her trust as she was not treated well at all in her former home. She was just lucky to be alive.

But now, her luck has changed, and after a few days at the shelter, she left for a great foster home with Pet Haven. We are told her foster dad has other small dogs and we know her hard times are over.

LILY AND HER PET HAVEN FOSTER DAD
RLRR wants to let people know that small breed dogs are NOT to be left outdoors to fend for themselves. Many tragic stories are reported about small breeds that become victims of predators, hit by cars and 4 wheelers, and many freeze to death in the winter. A small breed dog needs to be cared for indoors in a loving environment with food and water provided on a continual basis.

We want to thank the food providers and funders, transporters, rescues and great foster homes the Red Lake animals are getting. You are all appreciated and are saving the lives of animals like Lily.

Lovely Lily

Lily is the third of the foster pups from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue cared for by Linda that recently found great homes.
NOTE FROM LINDA:
Lily went to a nurse who has owned many dogs who lived to an old age.  She has an adult daughter who lives close by who will also be involved with Lily's upbringing and already has plans to have her out for runs on many dog trails and around lakes!

Lily was all curled up by the daughter when I left.
UPDATE FROM LILY'S NEW HOME:
Hi Linda,

Thank you for bringing Lily to us.....we just love her.  Also thank you for taking the time to go over everything regarding her care, it helps to see it written down.

Here's an update on her status since you left her in our care. She barked for the first time when I was on the floor playing with her. She has been enjoying the blanket and the toy you brought.

We found out that she has a good appetite and likes her water. We've been thinking of naming her Sadie, will let you know for sure soon. So far she is doing very well at going outside to pee and has also pooped three times. She is quite the snuggler, and seems so content......this makes us so happy. We can't get over how smart she is.
My daughter Katy is a nurse and is working days for awhile so Sadie will be kept company in the evening while I'm working evenings.  I have Thursday off this week so will give her a bath.  I plan on calling her new Vet tomorrow.  This Vet has been our family vet since 1979.....a very long time.

Thank you for everything Linda....you were a Great Foster Mom....and we will update you frequently.

Transport to Animal Allies in Duluth

Nancy answered the call on Friday November 2nd to transport a load of 37 animals from Red Lake, Leech Lake and Bemidji Pound to Animal Allies of Duluth. With winter impending, we are happy to move animals to warmer facilites where they have an opportunity for adoption.

ALPHABET PUPS
Riders from RLRR included the dogs Tammy, Snooki, Lily, Brownie, Scruffy, Jillian, as well as a litter of 6 sheps and another litter of 2 labbies.

SCRUFFY
LILY
BROWNIE
SNOOKIE

The cats included Harold and Toki, a orphan litter of 3 that went to foster care, Zach, Jack, and Zeke plus a litter of 3 grey tabby kittens from Bemidji area.

Many of the dogs and puppies are the remnants of the clinic surrenders.

JILLIAN
Jillian is a very sweet little dog, who needed help walking on a leash.

TAMMY
Also Tammy, who has been here for the second time, now gets a chance to be adopted. Tammy came in last winter with a litter of pups which we weaned and sent off, except for one pup and Tammy who was spayed and returned to the owner. Unfortunately, Karen got a call in October that Tammy's owner had moved out and Tammy was homeless, and her puppy was hit by car and was dead. Of course we went to search for Tammy and found her with porcupine quills and very thin. She was frightened and took a while to catch, but came around real quickly at the shelter. So this in a sense is her third chance at getting a safe and stable home!

ZEKE
ZACH
JACK
The kittens were all darling. Zeke, Zach and Jack were all rescued by Polly from the Red Lake garbage dump.
The tiny litter of orphans kittens were found in the woods in Ponemah and were rescued by Curtis who brought them to the shelter.
A special thank you to Dr. Wictor of Animal Allies and Nancy for helping get these animals out with hope for good homes.

Sincerely, Karen

Lily finds health and home

UPDATE FROM LAUREN:
Lily was surrendered at the July spay/neuter clinic because her family was moving and could not take her with them. They said that she was about 7 years old and that they'd had her since she was a puppy.

One of Lily's eyes was damaged from prior trauma. Lily was spayed at the clinic and also had a mass removed from her gums in her mouth.

Later that day, I discovered that Lily was bleeding from her spay incision and needed attention. I was worried about Lily and decided that she needed to come back to the Twin Cities with us.

The next morning, we found that Lily had bled overnight once again, but this time it was from her mouth where her mass had been removed. It appeared that as a clot formed, it would get dislodged, making her start bleeding again.

We were worried about the amount of blood Lily had lost. Of course it was a Sunday, so we had to drive Lily to the emergency vet clinic. At the vet clinic, they found that Lily was anemic and she eventually needed a blood transfusion. It was a stressful day, but we were so happy that Lily ended up being okay.

After only a few weeks of fostering Lily, another animal rescuer saw Lily's picture and wanted to adopt her. It was perfect as Lily would have another little dog to play around with in her new home.

So, Lily made the trip to Wisconsin where she now lives on tons of acreage with a couple other dogs. We are so happy for Lily - she is such a little sweetie and deserves the best.

Lily's eyes

I am writing on behalf of Lily, a pit mix female who was brought to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue on Sunday, March 6th wrapped in a bloody blanket---She had been dog attacked, and was bleeding profusely. She was dumped from a car at a residence in Redby. Avis, one of our great people from the community, brought her here to get help.

Lily was the NICEST dog I have met. I felt so bad for her- there is no way she would be in a dog fight and had to have been attacked unprovoked.

The vet found many old scars all over her body that had healed, so she had been attacked before multiple times.

She was about 2 years old and it was clear by the look in her eyes she had had a hard life full of pain. She was so sweet; she did not flinch when the vet cleaned her wounds or handled her -- totally cooperative and nice.

She was placed on antibiotics, pain meds, and received sub-cu fluids as we tried to bring up her temp as it was only 98 degrees from laying wounded out in the snow that cold morning. She came back to the rescue from the vet and was cared for in the cathouse.

To my sorrow, she died later that evening. It was a very sad day for me, but Lily suffers no more. She died in a warm house on soft blankets, with someone who petted her and told her everything was going to be okay.

I had hoped so much that she could live to enjoy life on earth, but for Lily, it was too little too late.

Thank you for supporting Red Lake animals like Lily.

Two months of weekly transports!

We have certainly broken records with our consecutive weekly transports that have been going on for 2 months now.

We are so appreciative to Barbara Olson and Michael Wilson who made the first October transport of 12 dogs and puppies to Tricounty Humane Society, Caring Hands, and to a RLRR Petfinder foster home. Barbara drove all the way to Bemidji to meet Michael with the animals.

BUGBug, the poodle, has possibly never been groomed or bathed and he is unneutered, but he is a great guy. Thank you Polly for rescuing him and thank you to the RLRR foster home for taking him on.

FOUR BIG SHEP PUPSA litter of 4 sheps were found on the highway and

TUCKER
LILY2 german sheps, Lily and Tucker are now at Tricounty in St. Cloud.

LENACarol Priest had found Lena 2 weeks ago, the rust shep, starving on the east side of Red Lake and rescued her. She has been spayed, was immunized and is heartworm and lymes negative. She is a very nice, well socialized dog so she went on to Tricounty as well.

FOUR LITTLE SHEP PUPSCaring Hands is taking the litter of 4 little tiny pups.

We are again thankful for places for these great animals to go with hopes for a forever home.

Sincerely, Karen and RLRR
