UPDATE FROM ACT V:
Status quo.
Another day in the ICU ~ recovery is on course. Nothing bad happened - no infections thus far, pain seems to be under good control. He naps, he eats, he is stable, and these are GREAT things.
Phoenix had an uneventful day in the hospital, precisely what we wish for.

HSUS Reward Offered in Redby, MN, Dog Burning

February 27, 2015
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for burning a puppy on the Red Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota.

The Case: News reports give the following account: On Feb. 20, a passerby found a 5-month-old, male husky-mix puppy abandoned in a burning trash bin on the edge of a northern Minnesota reservation village. Once pulled to safety, the puppy, since named Phoenix, was brought to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and then transported to ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation in Bloomington. Most of Phoenix’s hair was charred, his feet were very swollen on the left side, and he has significant burns on his knees. According to the veterinarian, he is about half the size he should be, most likely from malnourishment. Phoenix is currently recovering, but will require skin grafts over the next two to four months.

Animal Cruelty: Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and all manner of other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

Christine Coughlin, Minnesota state director for The HSUS, said: “Treating an innocent dog in such a cruel manner is disturbing and unacceptable. We’re so grateful to everyone working to give Phoenix a new start and are hopeful this reward will bring forward anyone with information about this terrible crime."

The Investigators: Red Lake Police Department is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Captain Dana Lyons, Jr. or Chief Conservation Officer Pat Graves at 218-679-3313.

Resources: The HSUS Animal Cruelty Campaign raises public awareness and educates communities about the connection between animal cruelty and human violence while providing a variety of resources to law enforcement agencies, social work professionals, educators, legislators and families. The HSUS offers rewards in animal cruelty cases across the country and works to strengthen laws against animal cruelty.

The National Sheriffs’ Association and The HSUS recently launched ICE BlackBox, a free smartphone tool, to allow users to record video of illegal animal cruelty and share it securely with law enforcement for possible investigation and prosecution.

The HSUS doubled its standard cruelty reward from $2,500 to $5,000 thanks to a generous donation from an HSUS board member. To see information on statistics, trends, laws and animal cruelty categories, click here.

Phoenix recovering from surgery

UPDATE FROM ACT V RESCUE & REHABILITATION:
Phoenix had an okay day in the ICU. He has a buddy with him in his incubator who he seems to enjoy - it's Cookie Monster!

He gets sedated during bandage changes; he's eating, drinking, and sleeping. In fact, he ate a good amount of chicken for Vicki. (Hand fed, of course :-)

And, since his arrival, he has gained two pounds. (Prior to ICU admission.)

Lastly: we need to make a correction - he had a skin flap (not a skin graft.) He's on medications for pain control, and our little fella is hanging in there.

Phoenix had surgery yesterday

UPDATE FROM ACT V RESCUE & REHABILITATION:
Our evening update and a respectful request:

Phoenix had surgery this afternoon, and we transferred him to the ICU for continued care.

We've had trouble keeping his burn wounds closed and, therefore, he needed a skin graft. Surgery went well, and now it is time to focus our attention on what we do best.

We need to concentrate on Phoenix and devote our energy to him. We have a responsibility to all of our puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats and want to maintain them as our focal point.

We will give you updates every night on the happenings of Phoenix, but we plan to step away from the email inquiries and personal messaging. Our goal is to ensure the success of his treatment and recovery.

It's funny; we had someone say to us, "I've never even heard of ACT V Rescue & Rehab". Well, we are a small group and operate on the quality, not quantity way of thinking, and we need to get back to delivering quality care.

We ask for your understanding and hope to build a long and continued relationship with you.

Many Thanks for helping Phoenix!!

Less than 24 hours after first getting a call about the burned puppy on the Red Lake Reservation on Friday night, Phoenix was in the Twin Cities getting treatment. This could not have happened without the great cooperation of multiple animal rescue organizations and individuals.

KRISTIN DELIVERS PHOENIX TO DR. VICKI AT ACT V
Thanks are owed to so many that probably not every name will get mentioned, but we want to acknowledge as many as we can and hope that all feel a tremendous sense of reward from helping Phoenix on his road to recovery.

First and foremost, there is Clayton Van Wert who happened to be at the dump, took the time to find the source of the sounds and risked himself to pull the pup from the burning dumpster. Thanks to Officer Kingbird for responding to the call, getting the dog to Polly & Dan and continuing investigation into who is responsible for this crime.

Karen Good of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue reached out to ACT V for help and Jenny Fitzer of Leech Lake Legacy arranged the emergency transport.Tom & Nancy O'Sullivan drove up from Bemidji to get Phoenix and bring him back to meet Kristin Tanchin who drove all the way up from the Twin Cities to Bemidji and back again to deliver Phoenix to ACT V.

Dr. Vicki Schulz of ACT V and her team came in that Saturday to the vet clinic to meet Phoenix and provide immediate care and pain relief. Marilou Chanrasmi of Leech Lake Legacy came to ACT V on Saturday, too, to take photos and then has provided daycare for Phoenix in her home this week.

Thanks to those who alerted the media to this story and shared it on social media. The life lesson here is that there is evil in this world, but there is also good. When the good people work together, evil must hide from that light.

Kindness Week!

Red Lake Elementary School children, parents and staff have an annual Kindness Week and Red Lake Rosie's Rescue just received this notice:

Red Lake Rosie’s was the chosen recipient of our fundraising for this year’s Kindness Week celebration at RLES/ECC. We raised a total of $706.83! And this year Sanford Health has again had a Celebrate Kindness Challenge in which they match a portion of the dollars we raise, which will add another $346 donated to RLRR. That will together total $1052.83!
Sincerely, Michelle Stapleton

What a very timely reminder that lots of people at Red Lake care about and practice kindness to animals!

THANK YOU from
Karen Good & RLRR

PHOENIX WITH DR VICKI

Sunday, February 22, 2015

"A phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor"

On Friday night February 20, 2015 at approximately 9:30 p.m. Polly McMaster, Red Lake Rosie's Board member received a puppy we named Phoenix from a Red Lake Police Department Conservation Officer.

This animal was found at the Redby garbage dump on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Phoenix was dehydrated, malnourished and allegedly had a propellant on him and was set on fire. He laid on an old blanket that smelled like gasoline.

TRANSPORT
Red Lake Rosie's Rescue was able to arrange transport for Phoenix to Minneapolis through Leech Lake Legacy today. ACT V Rescue and Rehabilitation took in Phoenix and he is under the care of Dr. Vicki Schultz.
EXAM WITH DR. VICKI
EXHAUSTED
Marilou Chanrasmi met Dr. Vicki at her clinic when Phoenix arrived and took some beautiful photos. She reports that he is an absolute sweetheart. Dr. Vicki will provide details on his condition (and treatment/prognosis). The basics are that he is probably five months old, but weighs just 19 lbs and he was very hungry.

SHAVE

MALNOURISHED AND DEHYDRATED
The stench of charcoal and burned fur was very strong. Truly amazing how sweet and resilient these precious beings are despite what they have endured. We are thankful to all involved in his rescue and help.

Sincerely, Jo Tallchief, Karen Good, Carol Priest, and Polly McMaster RLRR Board members

Phoenix: Puppy burned at the dump

This charred puppy was found Friday in the snow and the garbage at the Redby dump on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

A man named Clayton was hauling his garbage to the dump and found the pup in a burning dumpster. He was howling and trying to get out. Clayton pulled dog (we've named Phoenix) from the fire and called the DNR. Clayton took this photo.

Police Officer Kingbird came to get the dog and took him to Polly who is on the board of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

Karen asked ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation if they would take the dog and they would. Then arrangements were made for transport to Minneapolis on Saturday.

Someone knows who did this. Please call 218-268-4477 or 612-965-8293.. Please help Phoenix get justice.

Discarded at dump, now cherished pet

BEFORE
AFTER
This tiny kitten was found at one of the dumps on the reservation in a box. Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took her in and she moved to ACT V Rescue and Rehabilitation for treatment, foster care and eventual placement in a forever home. She found a new home  in no time and I suspect she is now the boss of the house!

White Earth surrender event Feb. 14

Hello everyone.  I wanted to thank all of you for helping to make our first event in White Earth a great success!  You should be very proud of the great work we did this weekend. WE Furr partnered with Leech Lake Legacy and Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for this great event.

Here is the final tally:

-19 cats surrendered

-11 dogs surrendered

-Thousands of pounds of dog and cat food provided to dog and cat owners
.

For many of us, this was a first chance to meet and interact with the local community.  We talked to a lot of local residents and I believe in most instances, it was a very positive experience.  Many of the residents were very excited to hear that we would be back again in May for a spay/neuter clinic.

I also want to thank Bill and Teresa for handling all of the logistics in Naytahwaush and for the delicious lunch they provided on Saturday.  And to all of the local volunteers - thank you for being a part of our first endeavor in White Earth.  You are a very critical part of ensuring that these events are successful and we were so happy to have you there.  I hope you enjoyed the experience and also want you to know that if you volunteer again at the May 8-9 spay/neuter clinic, there will be a LOT more to do!

So thanks again to all of you.  It is amazing what we are able to accomplish when we all work together.

Have a great day.
Jenny of Leech Lake Legacy
