Girl is a white husky shepherd mix that came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue when her family called to report that she had a litter of puppies in a brush pile. They brought Girl in to be spayed and surrendered the four pups they could catch.
The puppies were weaned so they went in one kennel and Girl had her own kennel. There were still 2 puppies left in the brush pile that the people were going to continue to try and catch.
Girl was walked on a leash day 1 and day 2. By day 3, it was evident that she was social and was safe to exercise 2 times a day off leash.
But on day 3, a winter storm came. It snowed and blew and was very cold. Girl disappeared from the yard and I looked and looked but there was no sign of her. I telephoned the family and told them she had disappeared and asked if they might take a ride up to the shelter when the weather improved to help me find her, thinking their familiar call would bring her back.
Much to my surprise, the family called me the next day-- Girl was on their porch in Red Lake. They watered and fed her and after eating, Girl immediately ran to the brush pile to look for her 2 puppies.
Girl had traveled 32 miles across a 20-mile wilderness and then possibly across the frozen lake, in deep snow in a blizzard and made it home in less than 24 hours! She used a keen instinct to find her way and did it all out of the love for her 2 puppies in the brush pile.
Those last 2 pups, Gabriel and Galen, were caught and went to MARS.
Lamar, Larena and Lara went to a RLRR foster home.
Dante, the runt, went to Act V.
Girl returned to the RLRR shelter, was spayed and went home on February 19. This time she accepted a ride!
What a heartwarming story.
