Another family saved from freezing

Look at Leona’s big smile! She is so hopeful now and appreciates the help she got!

Another family has been saved from freezing to death -- same story, but different location. A stray mama moved into a dog house where she had six puppies. On January 7th, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue received a call from Ponemah about the plight of the dogs. By this time, two puppies had already frozen. The person who reported them said the mama was a feral and we could never catch her and that the puppies were very young -- perhaps a week old. In spite of the fact that survival of the four remaining pups was not expected, we put a plan into action.

Paul and Phyllis are two great people who help in the Ponemah area which is remotely located some 70 miles from RLRR. They went and got the puppies and were able to catch the mama as well! We were at the Redby warehouse cleaning for the upcoming clinic and were so happy and surprised to see Paul and Phyllis walk in with the good news that they had rescued the whole family and that mama Leona is definitely not feral!

Leona is very malnourished so we began feeding small meals and lots of water- She will be producing lots of milk soon.

Again, a warm and well insulated igloo inside a weatherized kennel was set up with lots of nice dry straw. Fleece blanket were used in abundance. What a wonderful feeling to know this little family that was freezing and destitute this morning are now tucked in warm, fed and safe at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue!

Thank you Paul and Phyllis for your help!! Without your help, we could not rescue like we do in Ponemah which is so far shelter! We are sad that two puppies were lost, but happy that Mama Leona and four were saved.

Happy today!!

Cat news

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue isn't all about dogs. There are some fine cats and kittens getting help and finding homes, too.

This adorable little tabby kitten left after the June clinic for foster care with Mike and Lauren.

Colleen and Carol transported out some cats after volunteering at the June clinic.
LITTER OF EIGHT BLACK & WHITE KITTENSMama and her litter of 8 black and white kittens went to Pet Haven foster care.

MORRISMorris, a former barn cat came to the RLRR shelter to be neutered and for treatment of frozen and torn ears. He turned out to be a real lovie, but left for the barn life again.

He returned a few weeks later as he had an infection in the side of his face, so he was placed on antibiotics for 14 days. The owner decided to let Morris go and now he will be an inside cat--his barn days are over. We had sent Tom-Tom a similar barn cat to Feline Rescue and when Tom-Tom was quickly adopted, we were happy to let Morris go there, too.

Cleona and Leona went to Tri-County Humane Society in St. Cloud for foster care:
CLEONA AND KITTENSLEONA AND KITTENSLast summer, we had a call from Wayne, a resident of Redby, asking for help for the large numbers of cats that he had. According to Wayne, stray cats would come from the dump ground to his house where he was feeding them and caring for them. He said he did his best to feed the cats and even used ramen noodles to mix with the cat kibble to stretch the food through the month.

Well, the cats were not altered and he had a real problem with overpopulation. With Wayne's help we caught all the cats and neuter/spayed them, vaccinated, wormed, and applied flea and tick medicine. Akin and Ark did all the vetting.

We removed about 20 of the cats/kittens on to other rescues and Wayne kept about a dozen altered cats.

CARLSON CATSWe check on Wayne at each clinic and see if any additional unaltered cats have shown up. This time there was an elusive tomcat which we were not able to catch, but we will keep trying.

Jenny and Mary Fitzer have taken a special interest in Wayne's cat project and leave food and supplies whenever they have the chance.

This is a happy ending to what a year ago was a very frustrating situation for Wayne and he is very appreciative. This is what community clinics do for the Reservation people and animals!!

Thank you all

Kittens & Kibble!!

Karen has notified me of two significant needs for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue:

KIBBLE!!
Dear Friends:

We have a very low inventory of dog kibble at this time after the two clinics where we gave away to those dogs in community with no food.

RLRR NEEDS A PILE OF FOOD!Most of what is left is the individual packets which we will have to open and put in tubs for feeding. We probably have enough for 2 weeks. We have enough cat kibble and canned.

DENISE CAN TRANSPORT IT ON SUNDAY!Thank you for providing food in the past and we hope to get more soon.

Sincerely, Karen and RLRR

Contact Denise at blog@redlakerosie.org for drop off locations for food or make a donation to our PayPal account.

KITTENS!!
Also, there were a number of adult cats and kittens surrendered at the last two clinics.

CLEONA AND HER 2-3 WEEK OLD KITTENSWe need to find rescues or foster homes to take them. It is especially important that the mama cats Cleona and Leona with their young kittens get out of the cat house and into foster care.
