Another surgery for Phoenix

UPDATES FROM ACT V:
April 19
His wounds and scars need protection from the sun.

April 20

Phoenix is having surgery tomorrow morning.
He has a non-healing wound that needs surgical help.
In addition, he will be neutered (no need for extra anesthesia and an additional surgery.)
We realize this is a lot to handle for this little guy, but this wound needs attention, and to ignore it would be remiss.
So, no pictures tomorrow night because he'll be in the hospital, but we will carry on as usual afterward.

April 22

Phoenix arrived on February 21st and today is April 22nd.
It seems like he's been with us longer.
Perhaps it's because we've put him through three surgeries, a possible PTSD diagnosis (of sorts), and medical care almost every other day. Then, throw in socialization and training, all in an attempt to teach him the world can be a better place than what he once knew.
We've hired a Veterinary Behaviorist to help us create a plan for his future. We still work with Fresh Air Training, and we've started him on medications to help quiet his mind.
He's home from the hospital, (and doing well! smile emoticon and we'll post pictures tomorrow night.
Wow. This guy has been through a LOT.

April 25

Tonight we thought we would show you a picture of Phoenix's war-torn body.
He's healing pretty well, oozing a little in some spots, but overall we are happy with the outcome.

The combination of medications appears to be helping his body and mind, and we know this because he allowed us to give him a BATH!

We have reached a resting spot in Phoenix's health care. He's had three big surgeries, and he needs to recover before we can assess the next step in the plan.

Your donations have covered the cost of his care to this point, and we feel we should suspend accepting any more money dedicated solely to Phoenix.

No news is good news!

Happy Birthday to Crumpet!

In addition to Susan's recent visit to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue April clinic, her beloved RLRR dog, Crumpet, is having his 6th birthday party!

NOTE FROM SUSAN:

Crumpet has now tripled the average life span of dogs on his ancestral reservation! I feel so grateful and lucky to have Crumpy! Caity is occasionally less smitten.  Crumpy says he wonders why HE does not have a "Hello Kitty" birthday party every year. He WILL have special treats, though, all day long!!!

Events!!

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue had a table, puppies George & Gracie, and Shyla at the Pause 4 Paws adoption event. Tera made dog balloons for the kids, which were a hit.

A big thanks to the Pause 4 Paws Board and volunteers who worked hard to make this such a successful event.

 
RLRR received donations of kitty litter, paper towels, toys, etc. that were brought to the event, too.

We will be at the MN No Kill Walk this Saturday, May 2 from 9-1.  

A darling pair of kittens

These two tiny kittens came from White Earth Reservation - the owner had 2 litters of kittens and we wanted to take all plus the mamas.  We received two small kittens and one large kitten- and the two mothers were not found.  We are hoping that the owner will fix the cats at the upcoming White Earth clinic. From the same household we took one juvenile shep and a litter of 3 tiny pups.

These fluffballs are from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and are about four weeks old.
The abandoned duo are lapping up gruel and will transition to their foster home this weekend.
Send out the welcome wagon!

The kittens made it to their foster home today. Mom said they settled right in...
She's calling them "Finnigan and Clemintine" (aka Finn and Clem- ha!)

Little Angel Eyes

Angel, a white husky shepherd mix, came to Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue on April 19th from a Leech Lake Legacy event on the Leech Lake Reservation. Angel was transported by Tom and Nancy
directly to the RLRR shelter as she had a severe case of demodex and saracoptic mange and needed our help. She also had a bleeding colon.

On intake poor Angel was very thin and rundown with sores all over her body and white tufts of hair here and there. I imagined how lovely and stunning this girl was going to be in a few weeks with good nutrition, antibiotics, antiparasitics, and, of course, love.

We quickly learned that Angel had a wonderful loving personality. It did not take her long to adjust to walking on a leash, and then to free roaming. Angel runs around the shelter and then eagerly goes into her kennel space to get her canned food, medication, and supplements. Angel gets along with all the other animals at the shelter and adores human contact.

We are so thankful we have all the necessary supplies and space to provide for the healing of Angel and others like her. Thank you to all our supporters and to Leech Lake Legacy for sharing this
wonderful dog with us. Nancy calls her “Little Angel Eyes" as she has one blue eye and one brown eye.

We will be sharing updates as Angel heals and transforms into the beautiful creature she was meant to be!

Abner: Check out my shades!

Abner is enjoying the the beautiful weather while he rests and recovers. He's a cool dude!

UPDATE FROM FOSTER HOME:
I am fostering the love bug Abner. We had a nice quiet day yesterday following his surgery. He is getting around great on three legs. He is such a nice boy who gets along with my other 4 dogs and 2 cats. Thank you for saving him!!!

We are very grateful that ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation agreed to take in Abner to continue his recovery. He had gained back enough weight and strength to address the orthopedic issues with his damaged rear leg.

UPDATE FROM ACT V:

Well, Lord knows we tried.
Abner had to have his leg amputated last night.
The surgery went well, and we are hoping his pain will be relieved with the leg gone.
He was assessed yesterday, and his X-rays revealed a fractured acetabulum and pelvis. He had a cruciate rupture and patella luxation. He had been dragging his back end around town, but hopefully very soon he'll be a frolicking, happy three-legged dog!
He'll be back with his foster mom very soon, and then the loving begins...!
