Kindness Week at Red Lake Elementary School

Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue was invited to the Red Lake Elementary School on Wednesday, March 5th to accept the generous donation of the children’s 2014 penny drive as a part of their Kindness Week activities. Teacher Michelle Stapleton coordinates this event each year and the students have picked the animal shelter as their favorite charity. 

Karen, Bubba the Bulldog and Mouser went to the student assembly and accepted the proceeds of 60,000 pennies collected. Sanford Health also matched $250.00 of the donation, so Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue received a total of $850.00. 

The antidote for cruelty is kindness, and the elementary children and staff provided exactly that. We are so thankful to be reminded of all the kind people that care about their animals here at Red Lake.

Red Lake Rosie’s promised to come into the classrooms again with animals and a kind message as soon as the weather warms up and we have a schedule arranged. We enjoy our visits to the Red Lake Elementary where they always make us feel valued and wanted.

A big thank you to the Red Lake Elementary School from Red Lake Rosie’s Board of Directors Jo, Polly, Carol, Karen, and our furry friends Bubba and Mouser. 

Both Mouser and Bubba were big hits with the kids. 

Tate & Taylor: Ready for adoption

Tate & Taylor were surrendered to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue by a family because the children were mistreating them. (See earlier blog post.)

It turned out that Tate (the tabby) had a rubber band around his foot and would likely have died of infection or at least lost his leg if we didn't get him when we did.

We were fortunate that ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation could take the pair for treatment and foster care. Now they are ready for adoption as a bonded pair :-)

No question they should stay together after all they have been through in their short lives!

Rest in Peace, sweet Willow

We are sad to report that Willow lost her battle for survival on Sunday- She wanted to live and fought very hard.  

We are all saddened to lose this gentle spirit- but comforted that she is not suffering anymore. The Vet Dr. Bob and his wife Lauri were very sad, too.

Jasper's story

On February 5th, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue organized the rescue of a little six-month-old puppy from one of the villages on the reservation. A report came to us on our Facebook page of this animal in distress. Thankfully, we were able to engage the help of a nice man named Paul from the village to find the dog and transport him 70 miles to the RLRR shelter.

Taking one look at Jasper, we knew he needed immediate help. He was in a very emaciated, dehydrated condition with an infected wound from a gun shot on his side. Jasper walked with his back arched as if in severe pain. We were sickened at the sight of him, but thankful to have him in our care. We rushed off to the local vet for help.

The X-ray revealed the miraculous report that no pieces of the bullet that shot little Jasper hit any major organs or bones, and the outlook was very good for him. The bullet passed clean through his body with no damage. This baffled the vet.

Jasper spent the night in the hospital and then the next day became a resident in the cathouse under the loving care of Geri. When Jasper would go outdoors to do his business he always wore a coat.

Due to his hunger, Jasper was at first very agitated, trying desperately to get some morsels of food. After getting his fill of food, he became more relaxed and seemed to absolutely love his life in the cathouse. 

His posture has since improved and what an angel he is in the cathouse making friends with the cats and Blonde another resident dog.

Jasper is on antibiotics and pain management during the healing process. The warm environment with good food and lots of water all help in his healing. Jasper responds so well to kind words and now feels very worthwhile.

Red Lake Rosie wants to thank Paul and other rescuers who are willing to find the animals like Jasper who need help. Facebook has been very helpful in finding these animals.

And now, a happy ending for Jasper. He went to P.U.P.S. rescue and has been adopted!!

Jasper has found his forever home.  They said that he is AWESOME and their kitties are doing well with him.  Thanks for doing so much for him.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the brutal stabbing of this dog on the Red Lake Reservation north of Bemidji, MN. Jacob is recuperating

Jacob is recuperating at the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue indoors. He is eating well, and taking antibiotics and pain management daily. He is gaining weight and his wounds are slowly healing.
